I know that there are more serious things going on in the world, but I cannot find the Old El Paso Mexican Rice anywhere and I fear it has been discontinued. This is the worst.

This is killing me. High rates and the fall/winter slowdown is going to make for a very long winter. Make it stop.

My husband told me that he wants to throw out my vintage Michael Grave's toaster. I told him no. He tried to argue that it was just an old toaster. Joke's on him. They are listed between $170-$240 online used.

My job gives me the opportunity to talk to lots of different people all around the country. It is interesting because I know that many of them have different political beliefs than me, but most of them seem to be decent people. There are some that aren’t, and some that don’t try to hide it.

I am using my day off to swap my closet over to fall/winter clothes, so when it gets hot again, you know who to blame.

I have mixed feelings about this day, however, my overall opinion has not changed in 25 years, and I am still amazed by the massive gaslighting that has taken place.

Susan Sontag's 9/16/01 piece in The New Yorker got her crucified but it's one of the few things from that era that aged well. "'Our country is strong,' we are told again and again. I for one don’t find this entirely consoling. Who doubts that America is strong? But that’s not all America has to be."
The disconnect between last Tuesday’s monstrous dose of reality and the self-righteous drivel and outright deceptions being peddled by public figures and TV commentators is startling, depressing. The voices licensed to follow the event seem to have joined together in a campaign to infantilize the public. Where is the acknowledgment that this was not a “cowardly” attack on “civilization” or “liberty” or “humanity” or “the free world” but an attack on the world’s self-proclaimed superpower, undertaken as a consequence of specific American alliances and actions? How many citizens are aware of the ongoing American bombing of Iraq? And if the word “cowardly” is to be used, it might be more aptly applied to those who kill from beyond the range of retaliation, high in the sky, than to those willing to die themselves in order to kill others. In the matter of courage (a morally neutral virtue): whatever may be said of the perpetrators of Tuesday’s slaughter, they were not cowards. Our leaders are bent on convincing us that everything is O.K. America is not afraid. Our spirit is unbroken, although this was a day that will live in infamy and America is now at war. But everything is not O.K. And this was not Pearl Harbor. We have a robotic President who assures us that America still stands tall. A wide spectrum of public figures, in and out of office, who are strongly opposed to the policies being pursued abroad by this Administration apparently feel free to say nothing more than that they stand united behind President Bush. A lot of thinking needs to be done, and perhaps is being done in Washington and elsewhere, about the ineptitude of American intelligence and counter-intelligence, about options available to American foreign policy, particularly in the Middle East, and about what constitutes a smart program of military defense. But the public is not being asked to bear much of the burden of reality. The unanimously applauded, self-congratulatory bromides of a Soviet Party Congress seemed contemptible. The unanimity of the sanctimonious, reality-concealing rhetoric spouted by American officials and media commentators in recent days seems, well, unworthy of a mature democracy.

Those in public office have let us know that they consider their task to be a manipulative one: confidence-building and grief management. Politics, the politics of a democracy—which entails disagreement, which promotes candor—has been replaced by psychotherapy. Let’s by all means grieve together. But let’s not be stupid together. A few shreds of historical awareness might help us understand what has just happened, and what may continue to happen. “Our country is strong,” we are told again and again. I for one don’t find this entirely consoling. Who doubts that America is strong? But that’s not all America has to be.

There are already articles circulating trying to rewrite history and say America was great after 9/11 and united and thoughtful and just a reminder that that period was marked by intense and insanely racist hatred, paranoia, and a frothing desire for unhinged violence and oppression.

I wonder what all of those people that said they were going to wait to refinance until the new Fed chief started and lowered mortgage rates are doing these days? Or the lady that had confidence that Trump was going to force rates back to 2%. Wonder how she’s doing.

just another reminder that if you don’t like the idea of amy klobuchar as governor of Minnesota, your best course of action is to head to a swing house or senate district and get on the doors help get those caucuses so strong that Amy’s power as governor means less

Today we had brunch with a friend and his dad. They are from Toronto. It was interesting, yet sad to hear their thoughts on the relationships between our two countries. So much damage has been done, and it is going to take a long time to repair it.

I have been buying glasses from Warby Parker for years, but today is the first time I have gone there for an eye exam. Huge fan of the process. I was also able to get three new pairs of glasses, plus the exam for roughly $600, which is less than what one pair used to cost elsewhere.

My parents are from a small town in ND. My dad’s first cousin married my mom’s aunt. Their son and his wife just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary, and they posted some wedding pictures on FB. The aunt looks like my mom and the cousin like my dad. It makes the whole situation feel weirder.

Dear Men. If you are talking to a woman who is an expert in her field and she is telling you something that you didn’t know, the correct response is to just be quiet. You shouldn’t ask if she knows what she is talking about, because then she will fucking ruin you.
