I respect this approach. If instructors spend a significant amount of time policing AI use, we won't be able to devote sufficient time to the students working in good-faith who really need and deserve our attention and assistance. That's the hidden cost of trying to control AI use.

I just came across this today when @tressiemcphd.bsky.social posted it on Instagram. I’m sharing it with my statistics students, some of whom clearly used AI on their first homework. My TAs and I will not police AI use, and this is why I’m giving an in-class midterm and final for the first time.

Good and gutting. (No, really, it is very good—you should read it) David Perry, UMN student advisor, on what the university is for and how deeply the planned budget cuts will mess with that www.startribune.com/umn-cuts-sta...
And mostly, it’s worked out for the best. Even if we just assess for dollar value, a 2025 analysis found that for every $1 invested in the U, the state reaped $16.75. In other words, every Minnesotan benefits from our robust systems of public higher education.
It’s been striking to me that while conversation about the budget inside the U has been substantial, I haven’t yet seen Minnesotan politicians addressing these potential cuts as a crisis. Part of that is because public universities like the U have made a trade-off, growing increasingly corporate and independent (despite publicly appointed regents) as public funding has collapsed. As a share of the budget, state funding has plummeted over the decades, falling to about 15%, compared to 39% in 1997. If that’s what you want, then fine. But did we ever have a public debate about whether that’s what Minnesotans actually want?
If you don’t want to more significantly fund the university, which bits are you eager to cut away? If it’s instruction and student services, here’s what happens.

As someone who tends to express myself better in writing than off the cuff talking, it is also important to acknowledge that oral exams and debates may be easier for students with certain personality types, and that good performance in these contexts may or may not reflect learning.

Heather Randell @heatherrandell.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
He allowed “students to use A.I. tools on their final essays…Each then had a 45-minute oral exam”. Having to be prepared for oral exam in and of itself likely dissuaded most students from using AI. If the students hadn’t done the writing themselves, they may not have done as well on the oral exam.

The author proposes debates and oral defenses, which are great tiny, elite colleges like Williams where he works. This does not work for large classes or for professors whose time is spread thin with high teaching loads.

Most professors don't require writing for writing's sake, or to “serve practical needs of colleges and universities” but rather as a tangible way to encourage and assess student thinking and learning.

Tania Hary, the executive director of Gisha, an Israeli human rights group, said that
"unbearable crowding" and the breakdown of public services after the war were leading to outbreaks of disease, as well as infestations of rats and other pests.

"Most of Gaza's agricultural land also lies on the other side of the yellow line and is now inaccessible to farmers," she said.

People approaching the lines, even by accident, have been shot by Israeli forces.
