It was very unexpected, walked into the garden to sit in the shade, read that, and sat and smiled…a lot!

Another thing that made me smile this morning at the Museo Arqueologico Nacional, Madrid was the garden. The garden pays homage to the first Spanish female archaeologists “pioneering women paved the way for future generations”.
A gravel path leading into a garden planted with trees and shrubs. Brown sign in the garden. The sign reads” In this historic garden, associated since it was created with the National Archaeological Museum, we pay homage to the first female archaeologists in our country.
Born between the late 19th century and early decades of the 20th century, these pioneering women paved the way for future generations.”The names of the pioneering women on the sign in the garden:

The 16th- and early 17th- century tin-glazed wares in the Museo Arqueologico Nacional, Madrid made me smile this morning.
A large plate with a stylised figure depicted in blue and orange on an off-white background surrounded by blue and orange flowers and leaves. Made in Talavera de la Reina, in Toledo province, the main production centre for decorated ceramics. In the second half of the 16th century about thirty Talavera potteries made ceramics in both the Gothic-Mudejar style and styles inspired by the Italian, Flemish and Chinese traditions.A large plate with a stylised knight and a plant stem in the centre painted in blue, yellow and orange. The border is a stylised floral motif in blue, yellow and orange. A large plate with a portrait of a woman with the name “Margaritina” behind her head. Probably a wedding gift, the lady's portrait on its surface is framed like a classical medallion, a style typical of the potters of Deruta, Italy. Dates to the second half of the 16th century.A museum display case containing a variety of tin-glazed ceramics.

The edges of the known world at the beginning of the 16th century had some curious creatures if the northeast corner of Juan de la Cosa’s map of the world c 1500, in the Museo Naval, Madrid is to be believed.
Painted figures in the corner of a map. The one on the right is naked, has no head but a face in the centre of the body. The one on the right is an animal standing on its hind legs wearing a red robe. The sign “Museo Naval” with a model ship above it on the grey stone wall with doorways to on either side. The hand painted Chart of Juan de la Cosa, produced c 1500 in the Museo Naval, Madrid. America is the green area on the right, the compass is in the middle of the Atlantic and Africa and Europe on the left hand side.

In Madrid for a few days and outside our hotel is a statue of Cervantes, which two magpies were using as a handy perch this morning.
Bronze statue of the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra standing on a stone plinth with bronze panels on each side. A magpie is perched on the head of the statue and another is perched on the left shoulder. Behind the statue are tress and behind the trees is a building that looks orange and pink due to the early morning sun.

Promotional graphic with large text reading “Fancy being a researcher for Throwback Thursday?” over a split background. The left side shows a faded black and white historic street scene with a horse-drawn carriage and buildings along a wide road. The right side shows a modern view of a similar street with shopfronts, bollards and signage. A vertical textured line separates the old and present-day images, reinforcing the “then and now” comparison.

As promised @callanjd.bsky.social - photos of our advent window. We started off with a Twelfth Night theme but it kind of went off piste slightly.
A timber framed house with a 19th-century shop window decorated for Christmas with two life sized cardboard cut out William Shakespeares wearing Christmas hats next to a fake fire place. Angels and stars are hanging in the door window. Christmas window decorations with a pile of gift boxes on the left in front of two cardboard images of Shakespeare next to a white pole decorated with a green garland with small white and pink birds. In the centre is a fire place with Santa’s legs dangling above a pile of logs. On top of the fire place are books, a candle, bookends, a glass and a mince pie. To the right is a small figure of St Nicholas. A letter on top of the fireplace with a bookend on the left and the candle holder behind. The letter reads “Dear Father Christmas, I have been been good boy unlike my friend Kit Marlowe (who can be very bad) for Christmas I would like you to write a play for me please. I have the title Twelfth Night but need help with the rest. If you could make a funny play the Queen would like I would be grateful. William Shakespeare”.
