It’s low-stakes anime mystery time again, and today’s topic is the original giant robot: Gigantor. Gigantor has a long and complicated history on VHS, but these 3 white, clamshelled tapes are a mystery. Who put them out? Are they official? Why are only 2 of them sepia-toned?

Gigantor Volumes 1-3 on VHS in white clamshells. The image on the cover is sepia-toned for the first two.

Back of the VHS cases, showing identical images for the first 2 volumes, still sepia. There appears to be some copyright text at the bottom, but it’s too faint to make out.

In November 2022, Aquaplus would release Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten globally on the PS4, PS5, and PC in collaboration with Shiravune. …except there was a catch: only the PC version would be releasing outside of Japan

This was then followed in 2021 with an announcement that Atlus’s rights had expired, and Mask of Deception/Truth would delisted from the PS4/Vita digital stores. Now your only options to play them were a PC or the increasingly hard to find physical copies. www.gematsu.com/2021/01/utaw...

While this was going on, a third company had stepped into the ring: Mask of Deception/Truth received new PC ports in 2020 courtesy of Siravune, an English-language publishing house owned by DMM.com. They would follow it up with a PC port of Prelude in 2021. www.gematsu.com/2020/01/utaw...

Either due to poor sales or supply chain issues due to the pandemic, Prelude to the Fallen seemingly only ever got one physical print run(they all say Day One Edition), and they stepped back from Aquaplus. A Dokapon Kingdom crossover released in 2020 and Zan 2 in 2021, neither localized

NISA would put out Zan in 2019 and the Utawarerumono remake, Prelude to the Fallen in 2020. The vita release of Prelude was digital only due to Sony having ended cartridge production in 2019

Also in 2018, the first Utawarerumono game would get a ground-up remake for the PS4 and PS Vita, and Aquaplus would work with Tamsoft for the musou-style spinoff Utawarerumono Zan, only on the PS4. With their Atlus deal ended, Aquaplus moved onto their second English language publisher, NIS America

These games reportedly did not sell particularly well, as evidenced by the fact that all copies of both games are “launch editions”, as far as anyone can tell. Atlus West was also deprioritizing localizing games for other companies around this time, and they wouldn’t do any more Aquaplus games.

Atlus would follow this up with Utawarerumono Mask of Deception in 2017 and Mask of Truth in 2018, yet again sequels to a game you couldn’t play. They released it digitally and physically on the PS Vita and PS4, and the games were only available bundled with a body pillowcase.

Around 2011, Aquaplus would sign a deal with Atlus West to bring their games over, and they made some odd choices. They started with Aquapazza, a crossover fighting game of games you couldn’t play in 2013, and then followed it up with Tears to Tiara II, a sequel to a game you couldn’t play in 2014

Originally, there was no official english releases at all. The first game would initially be released on PC in 2002, PS2 in 2006, and PSP in 2009. None of these versions ever came west, but we did get the anime in 2007

With this in mind, I’d take to take some time to rant about how poorly handled US-distribution for the Utawarerumono series has been, especially as of late. (A thread)

What happened to the crazy inventor making stuff in his garage trope? When I was a kid in the 90's it was so common It seemed like a legit career path, now you hardly see it anymore and I feel like theres a darker reason for that shift. It’s definitely giving me a lot to think about. Like how horror and erotica mix. Marketing of anime in the 80’s and 90’s. Tentacles. It’s all stuff that’s been written about to death. But it will be fun to explore it with a kink-minded approach.

Weird anime release from the shelf time: Gunparade March It looks like your typical Media Blasters/AnimeWorks release… except where are the logos? Gunparade March was in fact the only anime ever licensed by the US arm of d-Rights, and they used Media Blasters for distribution.

Inside of the case. The disc says “Published by D-Rights Inc”. There’s a Media Blasters mailer and advert for a figure inside
