Calling all JRubyists at #railsworld! I HAVE T-SHIRTS! If you are using JRuby or officially support it in your app or library, come find me Thursday! I have L, XL, and one 3XL left.

Hello #railsworld! I'm here at the event running office hours and teaching people how to run Rails on JRuby. Find me in the vendor pavilion and grab a sticker!

Interested in Ruby::Box? Use JRuby and you already have it! These are fully-isolated, fully-parallel JRuby VMs running in the same process. Here's a simple example from my Euruko 2026 talk. Let's work together to make Box work on ALL Rubies!

Feels nice to be back in Czechia! I'm currently transiting from Prague to Brno for Euruko 2026. I think the last time I visited was almost 14 years ago, shortly after first joining Red Hat. I have a free day before and after the conference so I'm hoping to do a bit of touring.

Loving #rubyconf this year and seeing so many friends! I'm holding office hours today by the pool at Red Rock Resort, if you're at the event or in the area. We're in cabana number 4 in the roped-off area to the left (see picture). Come say hi and get a JRuby t-shirt or sticker!

Charles Oliver Nutter @headius.bsky.social · 13/07/2026

Oh boy... After a very long time, we have a new batch of JRuby t-shirts! Limited run so only folks at the JRuby talk, hack space, or cabana can get them! Also plenty of stickers for everyone! blog.headius.com/2026/07/jrub...

And it's live! I'll show you the latest and greatest use cases for using JRuby with *real world* examples at RubyConf 2026 in Las Vegas, July 14 at 3:30PM! Tell your friends! rubyconf.org/schedule/

Expand your Ruby Potential with JRuby
Charles Nutter

Breakout 2 - Charleston E-B

JRuby is an implementation of Ruby 4.0 built on the Java Virtual Machine. For the past 20 years we've expanded the horizons of Ruby, bringing more jobs and more opportunities to Rubyists like you: * High-scale applications needing shared-memory parallelism and big data * Enterprise organizations with existing Java infrastructure * Cross-platform, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) application packaging that protects your code * Graphics-intensive applications including desktop, games, and visualization * Mobile and embedded solutions using Android And you can do it all in Ruby, with no Java experience required! This talk will review JRuby's history and show you what's possible when you bring the best of Ruby and the JVM together.

Managed to get back to Kikanbo for my double-oni ramen of the trip (demon level spice, demon level szechuan). Evil stuff. Earned my special Oni candy as a result. Definitely one of my top five restaurants in the world.

Charles Oliver Nutter @headius.bsky.social · 17/04/2026

Excellent, densely-packed talk by @twnsnd.com at #wroclove.rb, starting with a short history of Rails and leading to modern best practices for tight, fast, nearly JS-free (no React!) web frontends. Makes me want to build something with a spicy-hot JRuby backend!

Charles Oliver Nutter @headius.bsky.social · 16/04/2026

SHOCKER! For a simple piece of code like "Array.new(10_000_000) {Object.new}", JRuby 10.1 with JDK 26 and compact object headers uses LESS REAL MEMORY than CRuby 4.0. That's just crazy. Real parallel scaling AND lower memory use?!

Note to self: don't ask AI (ChatGPT) to generate realistic flight maps. How many errors can you spot? I'll get you started: MSP is not in Georgia.

Excellent talk by Daniel Colson about the Ruby regex engine ("Onigmo" in CRuby, "JOni" in JRuby) with a deep dive on how it parses, compiles, and executes an expression. These kinds of talks are my jam! Loving @rbqconf.bsky.social so far!

Inspired by DragonRuby and a quick chat with @amirrajan.bsky.social at @rbqconf.bsky.social in Austin, I threw together a five-minute JRuby + Simple Directmedia Layer example using the LQJGL bindings! I'm actually shocked how easily this worked. JRuby is really amazing! 🤩

After Red Hat / IBM and I parted ways, I eventually sold off all of my employee stock purchases... Except for one share, which I had reissued as a physical certificate. It hangs on my office wall, and every quarter I get a dollar and change in dividends.

Major breakthrough tonight! After several back-and-forth weeks getting the Prism Ruby parser hooked up to the Chicory WASM runtime (AOT compiled to JVM bytecode), I now have a local version of the gem that uses *zero* native libraries. This will allow Prism to work anywhere JRuby does!

My first custom 3D print from a logo PNG, converted to SVG, extruded in Blender. Learning as I go but it turned out nice. Today's distraction is me realizing I need a serger for a fabrics project and I need to get seedlings started. Oh, and JRuby 10.0.4.0 is ready for release. 😵‍💫

We got some janky filament from the original owner so I've been tweaking settings and doing test prints mostly. Got a fresh order of filament yesterday. My first homegrown model was a corp logo PNG => SVG => Blender model to extrude => printer. Lots to learn but it's a good start!

I have a collection of video game equipment from the past 50ish years, ranging from a Magnavox Odyssey to a Neo Geo. I'm always looking for working hardware and games if you're looking to declutter. Notable gaps: Sega Saturn, Nomad, and MS; Famicoms; TG16 or express. Let me know!

That's probably enough of Ractor working for an evening project. I get the idea of the API but the internal details (deep copying and ownership) are going to be really hard for any Ruby to implement efficiently. You could just use threads and frozen objects on JRuby and it would be fast right now. 🤷

It just occurred to me... If star sprinkles must be mined out of the ground, and they are consumed once used, they are not a renewable resource. Rainbow Brite really needs to consider her ecological footprint if she's going to keep bringing color to the universe. 🌈

Yeah, guess what, Claude, you're wrong. This is why AI is basically useless for new and creative engineering. It only knows what has already been done. JRuby on Spring Boot is not only possible, but surprisingly easy.

I've been rewatching JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. No doubt about it, Stardust Crusaders is the best story (part 3) and Jotaro is the best JoJo. It's worth watching parts 1 and 2 for the background, but nothing compares to Jotaro and Star Platinum vs Dio.
