New insights on adolescent social media use and online communication in England from the HBSC 2022 dataset reveal: While Problematic Social Media Use (PSMU)* is often associated with negative health behaviours in adolescents, high frequency of online communications with friends, peers and acquaintances (FEMC)* have less negative associations with these behaviours and in some cases indicate higher engagement with positive health behaviours. Did you know? 📈 We have recorded a consistent rise in young people who report feeling ‘a lot’ of pressure because of schoolwork. In 2022, 32% of students reported this feeling, with 15 year-old girls being the most affected. #AdolescentMentalHealth #Healthresearch #School #YoungPeople #Wellbeing

Did you know? 🍩 Overall, a quarter (25%) of young people surveyed in 2022 reported eating sweets at least daily. This figure has stayed consistent over time, except for an increase in 11 year-olds. What factors could be behind this shift in younger children? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Happy International Day of Happiness! ☀️ Great to see further analysis of HBSC data by Gracia et al. The global trend in PSMU is reflected in our last national report. Between 2018 and 2022, we saw the biggest increases in problematic social media use among 11-year-old girls. #WHR2026 #HBSC

HBSC England February Update: Data collection is nearly complete — just under 10,000 young people aged 11, 13 and 15 have taken part so far, making this the biggest year of HBSC England yet. A huge thank you to every school involved! 🙏 Read more👇
