Are you a herper 🦎🧪student looking for a postgrad research project? Well boy do I have a project for you! Join @pezoporus.bsky.social, @certhionyx.bsky.social and I in Perth for a Masters project on connectivity and genetic diversity of two urban reptile species! May include fieldwork if desired.
Flyer describing research project titled "Navigating the urban environment: landscape genomics of two skink species in Perth." Text reads "Understanding connectivity across the urban environment is an important part of conservation management. This exciting Masters research project will combine genomic and environmental data to assess connectivity and genetic diversity in two fossorial skinks endemic to Western Australia — Buchanan’s snake-eyed skink, commonly found in urban gardens, and West-coast laterite ctenotus, restricted to remnant bushland. Comparing how these two different species move across the landscape will help inform conservation management of urban biodiversity. The student will conduct lab-based (DNA extractions) and computer-based (bioinformatics and population genomics analysis) work in this project. Field work is not required but may be optionally included. The student will be supervised by Dr Sean Buckley, Dr Rob Davis, Dr Brenton Von Takach (Curtin University) and

We found a stripe-faced dunnart well outside of its known range in WA. Short paper here --> www.publish.csiro.au/ZO/ZO23045. Photo by Josh Keen
An adorable small marsupial with a stripe of black fur running from the top of the head down to the nose, it stands on a substrate of dry bark and leaves, facing the camera and poised as if to leap away from the photographer

It is April here in Western Australia & we're hitting the 6 month mark since we had any meaningful rainfall. The hills to the east of Perth are quiet, as if holding their breath, waiting for the heat to break & refreshing rains of Djeran to begin.
A deep blue sky is striated with high clouds, above the dry shrubby heathland of the Darling scarp. The low vegetation is baked to a rich yellow brown colour, with the sparse and twisted moodjar (Nuytsia floribunda) and spikey-topped balga (Xanthorrhoea preissii) standing tall.

It's been likened to coral bleaching, but on land — and experts are fearful dry conditions have Western Australia on the brink of another devastating 'forest collapse' event.

📢 New paper out! Ever wondered what's going on with the random patch of grass behind your house? Wanted to know how much vegetation is hiding beside railways? Our method identifies & maps these informal green spaces! 🌿🗺️ 🌏🧪 #urban #urbanNature #urbanPlanning www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Figure from the paper showing a map of the City of Darebin, Victoria, Aus with different types of informal green space identified. Examples of the different types of informal green space are shown in thumbnail images around the map: brownfield sites, utility easements, street verges, railway sidings and vacant lots.

Pitcher plant traps have evolved at least six times, with two types found in Australia: the southwestern Cephalotus, which contains just a single species, and the tropical genus Nepenthes, which is represented by a few species (3000 km away!) in far north Queensland

A shot-hole borer invasion in Perth threatens urban trees, important crops and native forests. Understanding the impacts of both the pest and its management will ensure we get the best possible outcomes in both the short and long term. theconversation.com/australias-s...

Australia’s shot-hole borer beetle invasion has begun, but we don’t need to chop down every tree under attack
It’s a horror story unfolding in the west that could sweep across the country. Beware the shot-hole borer, an exotic pest that threatens our tree crops, plantations, urban forests and wild places.
