Local Patch Birding Sat along the shore of local lake waiting for the Common Loon to come close but it chose to stay out in the middle. A Double-crested Cormorant came a lot closer. The Osprey flew overhead after losing the Herring Gull harassing it. #birds

County Birding Joined a friend in a last chance try for winter gulls in Will Co. The site is adjacent to a large landfill and has hosted a number of rare gulls over the last 10 years. Among hundreds of Herring and Ring-billed Gulls we saw this Lesser Black-backed and a Glaucous Gull. #birds

Local Patch Birding I have been checking Lemont Quarries hoping for rare ducks but instead large numbers (1100-1600) of Red-breasted Mergansers have taken over. With them are Ring-billed and Herring Gulls looking to snatch their catch. A small flock of Am. White Pelicans flew over too. #birds
