Master’s tools dismantling the master’s house. Makes me think of the scene in The Wire where Brother Mouzone asserts that the most dangerous thing in America is a black man with a library card.
Photo of The Wire’s Brother Mouzone, from the shoulders up, with Baltimore row houses in the background. His clothing and eyeglasses are modeled on Malcolm X: crisp white shirt, black suit coat, plaid red bow tie, and horn rimmed glasses. He’s dead serious, and deadly. Out of view: his assassin’s hardware, his library card, and the latest issue of Harper’s Magazine.

🛶 I mean, really, can you blame Huck and Jim for being tired of humoring this royal nonsense? (But fawning to keep the king and the duke placated makes all kinds of survival sense. Twain’s reveal of the sausage-making behind the grift is…instructive.)
A still image from Schoolhouse Rock: a cartoon King George III scowls, right index finger in the air, as he says “Anything I say, do it my way now.” He’s dressed in royal red robes and a tiny crown.

If we talk about Huck and Pap and Widow Douglas and Jim, we're talking about what's still happening to some kids and some groups.

🛶 Pap, by E.W. Kemble
E.W. Kemble's drawing of Pap, Huckleberry Finn's father. Pap is sitting on a stool, leaning against the wall. He's a white man with a shock of dark hair and a big unkempt beard; his beat-up straw hat sits on the floor beside him, his hands are in the pockets of his tattered pants, and his leg is crossed to reveal a bare foot. He looks rough. Eyes closed, head titled downward, but also on guard. 0/10, would not like to meet in a dark alley.

🛶📖 Huck Finn readers, see you on Saturday, 8/15, to talk about chs. 1-5. Optional extra reading below in the comments.
An 1884 photograph of Mark Twain. He is standing up, wearing a white (linen?) suit and spiffy loafers, and holding hat and cane in his right hand. The backdrop is a studio photographer's painting of a creek at the edge of the woods. Twain is looking off in the distance, perhaps slightly annoyed that he's not actually outdoors.

Uh, Bethany House...?
Cover art for Susan May Warren's "In Too Deep." In a photograph-like portrait, a blonde white man stands on a mountain at sunset. He's laden with hiking gear and a backpack. His body is facing away from the viewer, but his face is partially turned toward the viewer. It's a knees-up shot, so you can see all of the tools around his waist.

The Smallweed Family by "Phiz" (Hablot Knight Browne) for Bleak House: A black and white illustration of a small room in the Smallweed house. Mr. Smallweed is in his chair by the fireplace, hunched over and exhausted. Judy, a sharp-faced woman with a carving knife in hand, looks angrily at a downcast girl in a bonnet (Charley). An old woman sits in the chair across from Mr. Smallweed. The kettle is on and steaming, and bread and butter is on the menu.

@nkjemisin.bsky.social’s “The World We Make” is a damn delight. Inventive, smartly-written, all the accolades — but most of all, heartening. Strength-giving. Hopeful. It’s the book I need right now.
Cover of N.K. Jemesin’s “The World We Make.” Excellent urban fantasy that fights the horrors—eldritch, political, personal—with resourcefulness and attitude. “I ❤️ NY” means fighting for and alongside its many aspects. This is book #2; do yourself a favor and go read “The City We Became” and then treat yourself to this one.

Cast of "U.S.S. Callister," a creepyass Black Mirror episode. A group of six people, all in Star Trek-ish uniforms, are on a spaceship bridge, surrounding their seated captain (Jesse Plemons). The captain looks stern but not convinced. His crew's facial expressions range from peevish to exhausted.

Book cover for Kristin Bair's novel, Clementine Crane Prefers Not To: a white woman in a white bathrobe reclines in a cozy green chair, with her feet up on an ottoman. Her family's crap (sports gear, spilled drink, clothing on floor) surrounds her. Clementine sips her coffee and Does Not Care. She has been inspired by the spirit of Bartleby the Scrivener.

Right??? One dumb hack is that I make sure to sound totally human in discussion, so the instructor hears a "voice." An opinionated voice, but hey. I might also attach an editorial P.S. about a source. Or footnote a crappy AI answer I came across. Or "All errors are custom-made by a human."
Cover of X. Fang's delightful picture book, "We Are Definitely Human." Three blue aliens with purple outfits float in space, along with their flying saucer. This one is fun to read again and again, and I totally recommend it to parents, aunts, uncles, etc. as a non-boring book with sweet illustrations and a kind message. MORE X. FANG, PLEASE.

in the dark I light that little fire
SLEEP by Ellen Bryant Voigt
another heavy frost what doesn’t die or fly away

the groundhog for instance the bear is deep in sleep I’m thinking

a lot about sleep translation I’m not sleeping much

who used to be a champion of sleep

ex-champions are pathetic my inner parent says the world

is full of evil death cruelty degradation not sleeping

scores only 2 out of 10

                                       but a moral sense

is exhausting I am exhausted a coma looks good to me

if only I could be sure there’d still be dreams it’s what I miss the most

even in terrible dreams at least you feel what you feel not what

you’re supposed to feel your house burns down so what

if you survived you rake the ashes sobbing

                                                                        exhausted

from trying to not smoke I once asked for a simple errand

from my beloved who wanted me not to smoke he forgot unforgivable

I fled the house like an animal wounded enraged I was thinking

more clearly than I had ever though my thought was why

prolong this life I flung myself into the car I drove like a fiend

to the nearest store I asked unthinking for unfiltered Luckies oh

brand of my girlhood I paid the price I took my prize to the car I slit

the cellophane I tapped out one perfect white cylinder I brought to my face

the smell of the barns the fires cooking it golden brown smell of my father

my uncles my grandfather’s tin of loose tobacco his packet of delicate paper

the deliberate way he rolled and licked and tapped and lit and drew in

and relished it the smell of the wild girl behind the gym the boys

in pickup trucks I sat in my car as the other cars crept by

I looked like a pervert it was perverse

a Lucky under my nose

                                        I drove myself home

I threw away the pack which was unwise the gods

don’t notice whining they notice brief bright flares of human will

they lean from their couches yes more fear and dread for that o…

Kowalski knows what’s up.
A penguin with folded wings says “Say something smart, Kowalski.” The second penguin, looking shellshocked by his own words, replies “ If you don't spend time getting to know yourself, you'll end up absorbing everyone else's random and conflicting ideas about you. Knowing who you are on a very deep and intimate level is the best way to protect yourself from internalizing disempowering opinions from others.” Ouch.

Except for me. 1: Wait no

Sinners is excellent movie-making. Don’t wait for it to come to the small screen—it’s a feast for the eyes and ears in big ways. The COSTUMES, my God, the costumes, each of them an essay on time and place, just gorgeous!

Where is the love for Pepe, the king prawn? Why I gotta ‘splain to you people???
Pepe the king prawn raises his eyes to the sky and asks, with all four of his arms, WHY. He has enough confidence that he expects God to answer, and enough fatalism to accept a shrug right back. But do not worry: his natural charm and impatience will help him make it through.
