In Ottawa/Gatineau for a week. Nice to see the sun and trees again, after a week and a half in Iqaluit. Not sure why everyone is dressed for winter, though... ;-)
Canadian Museum of History Building (Administrative Side). Gatineau, P. Q. Pretty Building above the Rideau Canal, Ottawa. Partly cloudy skies. Trees below.

An Inuit qayaq, covered with sealskin, at the Arctic College in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Trying to find more information it, but it is likely a local type (South Baffin Island) built ca. 1940s-1970 or so-- perhaps as a cultural reconstruction by elders at the time (as opposed to an active hunting model).
Sealskin Inuit kayak, with bow to the lower right. Cloth tape laid along deck for measuring. Cockpit of an Inuit sealskin kayak, showing the ribs and other structure inside and caribou antler re-enforcement strips on the front of the coaming. Some cracks in the covering are behind the cockpit. The coaming has stitching which attaches it to the skin covering. View from the back of the cockpit of an Inuit sealskin kayak, showing the ribs and other structure inside . The coaming has stitching which attaches it to the skin covering. Straight-backed coamings became more popular when rifles were used for hunting, as the barrel could lay in the back corner without rolling around (Butt of the stock would be next to the hunter's legs).

Inuit discussing the qayaq-- one built and one under construction. With the turn in the weather, more construction will happen. Thankful I was able to get out on the land and sea while I could. Iqaluit, Nunavut.
Inuit from Kugaaruk, Coral Harbor, and local (Iqaluit) looking at an Iqaluit-built kayak. The completed upper-frame of a South Baffin Island style qayaq (Kayak). Appears like a ladder, with tapered ends-- more voluminous aft, pointier forward. Iqaluit Weather, including forecast: 35f. -- feels like 16 with rain. More of the same upcoming, with snow arriving Saturday. . . the day I leave. Wind gusts up to 31mph. Looks like an Oregon Winter to me, but just normal fall weather here.

Lower Columbia River beach finds, Rice Island Edition: A Prayerful mammal effigy, an aluminum canoe, and a decoy. More in Alt Text.
A stuffed animal praying for rescue, abandoned or washed-up on a beach. A river beach with a sand-filled aluminum canoe; river and mountains in the background. A duck hunter's decoy, with pink body and orange beak. I'm not sure what species this is supposed to be, but my Merlin App identified it as a Common Murre, which I don't think is a bird you are allowed to shoot. The pink color and size suggests to me that it is a baby Flamingo. None of the hunters I talked to remember this bird, so they were probably extinct around here by ca. 1950.
