When it seems too good to be true, it usually is… But shoot, it would have been so cool to follow them the whole winter 😢

We’re having a bit of an empty-nest-syndrome here. T98 is the last of @gullbilledterns-de.bsky.social gull-billed terns equipped with a GPS that’s still on the continent.

Finding out why birds do not make their way back to us, in addition to the when and where of mortality is one of the main aims of the project, so we would be very, very grateful!

It seems more accessible than the location of H36, so here I go again: do we know anyone in the Fontes area who would be willing to try and find the bird and/or tag and send us pictures and the device? We can cover costs for postage and a few kilometers.

I can’t believe I am writing this, but chick T99 chose another route than his dad L43, and whereas dad seems to safely be hanging out in Spanish Laguna de Gallocanta, the GPS track of T99 suggests predation in Portugal. Here’s the position: maps.app.goo.gl/qHsMCT8HUzWm...

There are only 3 GPS tagged adults and 2 GPS tagged chicks left on the continent now: two in France and three in Spain. Fingers crossed for those to make it to their wintering areas safely!

H36 was the chick of logger-parent L46. But they were not traveling together. L46 left the continent on the 30th of August after having taken a different route:

Dear Bluesky-friends, I am back to ask another favour. Gull-billed tern chick H36 has died close to Parque Nacional de Doñana. It seems to be on a small island in the Caño de Guadiamar: maps.app.goo.gl/Z195ha4z9zYY...

It is September and there are still a few Gull-billed Terns in NW Europe. During daytime, this bird is staying near Emden (D) and at night he is sleeping in the Dollard (NL). It is a male and he has a chick to care for. The frog he caught was too delicious to feed to his chick, so he at it himself.😋

To the birding community: one of our GPS-tagged redshanks was predated during its migration in France. We would be very greatful if we could have the GPS tag back and get as much information as possible from the bird! This is the last position: maps.app.goo.gl/jCWDXDfhnJPT... @genmig.bsky.social

Harry Kuipers @harrykuipers.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Heel voorzichtig laten wennen.

Hot yesterday, 36°C. This young Gull-billed Tern was hot too. Video shot from a boat, so the image is a bit shaky...

Meanwhile in Noord-Holland. One of our gull-billed tern chicks doing some playful flight training in between feedings and naps. With slootjes (ditches) full of frogs and a parent nearby bringing them on life can be easy. Thanks to Fred Visscher for the lovely footage.

Lachstern jong T86 had geluk. Gull-billed tern chick T86 is lucky. He swallowed the frog he got from his parent quickly enough. The gull was too late.

It looks like the first logger bird of the project we share with @gullbilledterns-de.bsky.social has left the continent. L38, after short stopovers in the Netherlands and France, was last recorded in Andalusia on the 25th of July. No more data points until next spring, I suppose.

See that cute gull-billed tern chick thinking of leaving the safety of the frog- and electric fence that allowed it to grow up behind? Well, it did, and with a logger, so that you can also see its first trip away from the colony on the right. ❤️

After last year’s successful pilot study, GPS-tracking @gullbilledterns-de.bsky.social's birds, we’re back at it this year. The lovely bird @harrykuipers.bsky.social photographed is L39, a 5-yr old female, breeding with 4-yr old R75 on nest 8. She laid two eggs that both hatched successfully.

Springtime! The oystercatchers are back, chiffchaffs are singing everywhere, and 'strange' black-headed gulls at my usual spot. This black-headed gull was ringed in Norwich 🇬🇧 in December 2023 and every spring it travels via Groningen 🇳🇱 to its breeding grounds in northwest Russia 🇷🇺.
