Air pollution is usually regulated by quantity. But this study highlights something crucial - the type of pollution matters just as much as the amount. Really crucial for more targeted policy interventions in the future for the UK!

Sometimes climate impacts come from unexpected places! NCAS scientists found that in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City, laughing gas from party hotspots can spike up to 80x normal levels. This gas is 300x more powerful at warming the atmosphere than carbon dioxide and it also harms the ozone layer.

When shuttle tankers are loading oil out in the North Sea, methane emissions peak at around 230–500 kg/hr. With accurate methane accounting becoming essential for meeting climate targets, these findings highlight a critical gap.

When it rains, it now rains more. For those experiencing the flooding in south-west England, it is worth remembering that rainfall in winter has increased by about 25% overall. And, the rainfall has also become more intense: when it rains, it now rains more, increasing the risk of flooding.

Great to see @katiewhitemp.bsky.social talking about this last week, and to see Met Office and UEA info get shared so widely. NCAS provides long-term support for the HadCRUT global temp dataset, which confirms 2025 as 1.4C above the 1850-1900 baseline - and in the top 3 warmest years on record.

Sometimes it’s the small swaps that add up ✈️ We’re replacing the fire extinguishers on our atmospheric research aircraft to cut down on equipment containing ozone-depleting substances. We’re exempt from the directive - but we chose to do it anyway. ncas.ac.uk/new-fire-ext...
