My oil painting of shadows on the Tiber river, Rome 🇮🇹 "Shadows on the Tiber, Rome" 45 × 55 cm, oil on linen I loved breaking this painting down into big graphic shapes of colour and value, and using them to capture the feeling of that bright, fleeting moment by the river.

"Cypress Trees on the Peloponnese" 50 × 40cm, oil on linen I loved pushing my colour choices in this painting, and I think the final effect is both believable and interesting. Ending up with a painting that follows my ideas, rather than exactly adhering to reality, is exactly where I want to be.

This painting was a tricky one because I kept painting over my choices. I wanted the shapes and colours to go beyond pure reality, with crisply silhouetted deep-blue cypress trees. But I kept automatically bringing detail and highlights back in, which undermined the effect.

Pursuing a career in painting sure can feel daunting sometimes, and like I'm screaming my art into the void that is the internet. But something I've learned recently is the best antidote to anxiety is action (unfortunately!).

For seven years, I lived on the street behind those phone boxes in beautiful Pimlico. In winter the sun is so low that it funnels straight down the streets, lighting the white terrace houses in oranges and yellows along its way. This painting is all about capturing that light effect.
