HIV care has never been more advanced. But is everyone able to access it? Stigma, marginalisation and barriers to healthcare continue to stand in the way of health equity. At #AIDS2026, Alexandre Putti and João Netto shared key perspectives on what needs to change.

🏳️‍⚧️ What can the harm reduction movement do for the trans community? We asked Pedro Ivo Oliveira, Health Officer at GATE at #AIDS2026 in Brazil. Trans-led movements are resisting despite a lack of funding. But resistance alone isn’t sustainable.

What works? Overdose prevention works, but only if it reaches people who need it. Access to naloxone, opioid agonist therapy, needle and syringe programmes, drug consumption rooms and drug checking need to be available to the people who need it the most.

Funding cuts have put lifesaving services at risk. They have led to understaffed facilities, programmes and organisations closing. This can cost lives.

Stigma and discrimination can keep people from getting the support that could save their lives.

Harm Reduction International @harmreductionintl.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Black, Brown and indigenous communities are consistently being left behind in the overdose response. Young people and those living in poverty often can’t access the services they need.

Harm Reduction International @harmreductionintl.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Overdose prevention strategies have grown significantly over the years. But access remains an issue. When people can’t access the services they need, preventable overdoses can become fatal.

Punitive drug laws have a significant impact on the transmission of HIV. Criminalisation, stigma and discrimination block access to life-saving services.  Today, at #AIDS2026 we share a message: People who use drugs must not be left behind in the HIV response.
