When the only law you enforce and judge according to is Wilhoit's, you can't be taken as a dispassionate arbiter of law but only as a partisan trying to impose yourself on your country. Acting with bad faith is not a condition that is treatable - it can only be solved by removal from power.

rapist << anti-vax narcissist a-hole would be my choice? I fortunately didn't have the option of watching, and I need to root for another attention sex worker like I need another hole in my head, but rooting for an a-hole is much better than rooting for a predator

it was a joke at my school. the chemE people really hated the multiple unit systems because they constantly had annoying problems with unit shifts as the rancid cherry on top

I know at least two "retired" people who aren't actually retired (one works full-time for my church except for the "getting paid" part and the other works a whole bunch for it as well). If it were in the US, "projection" would be a good explanation.

we use Angstroms for X-ray mostly rather than pm and lots of people use CGS. OTOH, no one uses the furlong/firkin/fortnight system for chemistry

What do you mean? It's worked out great everywhere it's been tried...oh, wait. When governments run by people who hate their fellow citizens (humans), don't understand what governments are supposed to do, and think they're immune to consequences, the results are baked into the recipe.

one puff would be enough, I think, and I'm fine with that, as long as there's hazard tape around them so no one else gets hurt.

I don't know? Your second part is what I'd do with the units. For their preferred AI term - sort of? (I assume they'd like that to be the next AI frontier, which is...no.)

The narcissist, his handlers, and techbros can suck on a refinery pipe (I vote for one with methanethiol) - if you need to change, supplementary material (SM) for supplementary information, but SI units are the world's and don't need to change (not our authority)

GOP Congress is very happy to give away other people's rights - they want to make the precedent that they can ignore Congress and courts when they want and that others can't.

Before they renovated the apartment I was in, there was brown water going into my shower - it was hard to tell if it was brown before or after it filtered through the particle board ceiling.

The Rockies have a structural advantage - the AL West has earned its status all by itself.

Being an anti-vax narcissist does not compare to at least 22 incidences of sexual assault (noted as "predatory" in the NFL review). Comparing Watson to Rodgers is probably equivalent to comparing Trump to Watson.

Doing the work is a lot of anything - if you do the work you can get somewhere (and if not you probably can't get anywhere) - it's necessary but not sufficient, and tedious and difficult besides (diligence is hard to do consistently - see Atul Gawande's Better) and doesn't pay like entitlement does.

I assume he's never talked to anyone who's been in a war (and is talking to others in a similar position) - war is where virtue is killed (among other things).

Lip service to the "free market" is because they want the respect from having won fairly without playing fairly. (If the "free market" isn't free when you don't win (despite lots of structural advantages), you obviously don't care about a free market.)

Service employers have contempt for their employees and want them to know it? That's certainly true when your employer is the Trump Administration. It might also make it harder to retain employees because Trump and GOP don't think the govt should employ anyone (except them).

And I assume it would like to forget. Based on this week, I am assuming that most things on ex-Twiiter have aged as well as a meat-lover's and onion pizza in a car in AZ in high summer.

Suffering can be either the Reviewer 1 or Reviewer 2 of character and it's often hard to tell which. "Not all pain is gain."

The most convincing lies are when you have 95% truth and 5% lie - I thought that was standard disinformation/intelligence strategy.

If you're concerned with what your children and the people after you (and the world around you) will have to live with, you maintain institutions. If you just want to get as much stuff as you want to have and get out before everything fails, you don't. We appear to have one and not the other.

I was sloppy - sorry. I don't think they have patriotism but they say they do and no one who could say otherwise does.

I don't think I'd turn my back on any significant group of soldiers if I were Pete - someone probably has a grenade or ten to lose track of.

they're all that matters to them - the patriotism is how they get access to the money, and nothing more

If someone has repeatedly shown in the past that they don't care about evidence and don't believe their own arguments, then they need to show that these conditions are no longer true before talking to them. Arguments should be treated with the faith their submitters accord them.

yes, but with Hegseth running things, you aren't certain of having a (good) blaster at your side. "Pete Hegseth: Bringing Current Russian Military Strategy and Competence to America"
020
Hap @hapchem.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I think Hegseth likes the "you can't question my orders because they're obviously from God" part of "holy war" and not the "What did God tell you to do, again" part (although he didn't say what God - my vote is on Cthulhu). Considering what he's already ordered, I think unholiness is assured.
010
Hap @hapchem.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Besides "holy wars", I'm allergic to "resilience" - it is often used to blame failures of organization and resources on personal weakness (or to demand that employees and soldiers commit more than they can afford to lose on jobs that employers are unwilling to commit much if anything to).

If we didn't want the standard to be what it is, then we shouldn't have walked past it. We've also made the costs of women standing up for themselves high enough for the expectation of "Why didn't you speak up?" to be unreasonable.

because their victims have to "deserve" it and we haven't yet fallen far enough for them to say "they were the wrong color" openly.

Broken record: someone asked for this - they approved someone who had no relevant experience but tenuous masculinity, lots of bigotry, and a newsstand of issues. The military functioning was less important than having Steroid von Stormtrooper in charge. Some of the embarrassment should fall on them.

Hap @hapchem.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
In theory I could see it (the 4th A) but we've never been able to ensure due process - we can't even be sure we have the right person (at least 1% of the people convicted of death penalty crimes could be shown to be innocent) and so we can't be trusted with that power. Also lots of systemic racism.

Yes, that was what the person who blocked me was afraid of (because he was retiring shortly) - lots of people expecting to be able to retire won't be able to, and either will get laid off (more likely) or prevent younger people with impending student loans from being hired. Hence, dreams of bailout.

One of the people I know in the field avoids investing in Nvidia and people invested in them because of this - when AI goes, they go with it.

Which don't need confirming. My not-wife's SO has lots of conspiracy theories that are not going to be falsified where he reads them, and he acts on them (votes). The problem is that creating a self-validating loop with no ability to distinguish truth has real-world consequences (like death).

Nvidia's going to eat a lot of crap if (when) they aren't built and they either gave out a lot of chips and didn't get paid or have a lot of chips that have no buyers.
