A new character has stepped forward, Emma’s husband, a Mr Wickham-style character. This might mean the story will include letters from Emma. He certainly gives the story a more sinister slant. Need to get my pens and sheets of paper out, to shuffle this into some sort of order.

Was there anything in this episode specific to Tara, or could any of Steed’s assistants have played this role 🤔

I’m still not clear about the Mother character. I understand his position in the hierarchy, but not certain about him as a person.

Negative comments made here in the search for perfection (unobtainable). Enjoyed this episode 8.5/10.

I think this would be a good episode to have a director’s or actor’s commentary. Worth viewing a second time to appreciate the nuances.

I agree. This is a fun episode 👇

Strongly agree with your John Hough comment. This episode didn’t seem as structured, as formulaic, as many Avengers episodes, and benefitted from that. You were never 100% sure what would happen next, therefore genuine suspense.

In a long running series like The Avengers, I think those involved would have been pleased with this episode.

I think this was the best episode of series six, so far. Lots to enjoy. High marks for the humour.

I thought the sets involving Mother and the owner of the window cleaning company were poor, sub-standard. Too much of Mother too. A character like that should be used lightly.

With a bit of re-writing, this could have been a gripping and humorous straight spy story. The time standing still element took it into a different dimension, an Avengers dimension, if you like. Viewers in the 1960s might have loved this, but I thought it was the weakest part of the story.

The big reveal - the cigarette and burned fingers was very well done. This is the nub of this episode - how those fingers got burned.

A negative - this is true of the series, not just this episode - the stuntmen looked like stuntmen. In this regard, Linda’s scenes were the best. Did she do her own stunts?

George Markstein could have written this story, or at least elements of it. That’s a compliment.

Spoilers. A sense from the start that the photographer wouldn’t make it to the final reel.

Lots of familiar faces in the cast, probably too many for one episode.

Linda throughout did well enough. Seemed at ease with her role. If anything was missing it was experience, her acting experience. A challenging series to be thrown into, that early in a career.

Opening sequences suggested a standard spy story, an interesting story. Good use of the helicopter. A promising start.

One comment for now, then I will hand over to you. Scene One: I thought the person on the bike was Terry Jones cycling to the set of Life of Brian…

Mainly, I’ve been in 1964 today, writing an article for the Seaside News and researching background for Leigh. Been thinking about Emma’s character as well. Been wondering what Lydia would tell her, and hide from her, particularly in relation to the Storm in a Teacup plot lines.

Here’s a few we made earlier. If you enjoy my 1960s posts on Bluesky, I think you will enjoy Songbird. It’s set in 1963, with plenty of snow on the ground. Idea for winter evening listening.

I’m writing my 1960s article for the Seaside News, this time highlighting the 1964 music scene. Of course, the Beatles dominated, but I’m focusing on the Honeycombs and their superb Have I the Right, featuring Honey Lantree on drums.

I’ve found some great pieces in the 1770s newspapers, which I can drop into the narrative (probably into the letters) to give an authentic sense of the time. And the location and its history are well known to me. These details will be based on historical accuracy.

Yes, I like the idea. I‘ve jotted down a potential framework. Ch 1 - 2, letters. 3 journal. 4 letter. 5 - 12 (the smuggling aspect of the story) journal. 13 letter. 14 - 16 journal. Close with a letter. The various strands converge around ch 12. Structually, this is the crucial part to get right.
