We have a new pre-print for open peer-review on EGU. "Towards a national integrated model for land, energy, agriculture and forest systems (TIM-LEAF v1.0)" describes a new integrated modelling framework led by Neha Jaggeshar as part of our EPA-funded SELFS project.

(Shamelessly using the opportunity to show off my weekend baking) I'm surprised that the obsession with sourdough and food provenance hasn't caused much of any rise in Irish heritage grains. This fine loaf has ~30% native Olands flour, grown and milled in Kilkenny. kellswholemeal.ie/product/nati...

This is a great explainer, thanks for sharing it. My head is still absolutely reeling from reading this deep dive into what Anthropic thinks of Claude's "mind" and potential for moral character, which I find abhorrent. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/29/u...

Here's the liquid gas industry framing its product as a "just transition". This would be sidesplittingly funny if it was not apparent that this message is getting through to politicians.

The CSO has released data on metered electricity consumption for 2025. The extraordinary headline figures: - Electricity consumption from data centres grew by nearly 10% last year, and now accounts for 23% of Ireland's electricity demand.

tl;dr: 1. represent the whole climate problem 2. represent the whole solution space 3. fix carbon accounting to reflect the damages of overshoot

I've been at the International Energy Workshop in Cape Town this week. I'm avoiding the brutal European heat, but the concept of climate overshoot is top of my mind. I gave a keynote talk on how energy systems modelling can evolve to support countries in returning from overshoot.

No subtle climate-delay tactics on display here from Deputy Danny Healy-Rae during Ireland's Earth Day parliamentary debate - just classic, old-school climate denial, "we can't control the weather". www.oireachtas.ie/en/debates/d...

Wow, Claude is remarkable. The first scenario is high battery & electricity price, low diesel price, and low usage (the investment never pays back). The second scenario is more optimistic (the investment pays back in 3 years).

In today's Irish Times, I unpack the many layers of irony associated with the fuel protests over the past week. The government's €750 million financial package to cut fuel prices adds to the ~€4.8 billion in public finance lost each year to fossil fuel subsidies. www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2026...

According to this, IEA member countries hold 1.2bn barrels of oil in emergency reserves and have agreed to release 400m barrels, by far the largest strategic release in its history. The Strait of Hormuz typically transmits 20m barrels a day.

Trebling does seem extreme. I’ve not seen that explained but I guess that kerosene is scarcer than other oil products. The rise in Ireland has not been as great - an 80% growth (ish)

There is an abundance of wind on the Irish electricity system this morning and the network operator is imploring me to use energy. Wouldn't it be nice if it was cheaper? My column today is an "explainer" on dynamic tariffs, which are coming this summer. www.irishtimes.com/science/2026...

When electricians spend all day trying (and failing) to diagnose internal wiring faults and the neutral from the pole is just… lying on wet grass behind you. In the rain. Always check the boundary of the system first, folks. And thanks to ESB Networks for being electricity wizards ⚡👏

New UCC paper shows how low beef and sheep systems are for net digestible protein per hectare: they produce protein for 2–3 people per ha, versus ~23 for milk and ~40 for legumes. That’s ~15× more digestible protein per hectare from legumes than beef.

Very nice. The Irish wholesale market could support a tariff like this also.. especially during the summer because PV penetration is growing. Though sadly, PV wouldn't match with heating needs, apart from bright cold days in spring and autumn.

(For non-locals - to be "sound" is one of the most important qualities to aspire to in Ireland. For locals, the Soundabout is where the slip road from the South Ring to Togher meets the flyover coming from Forge Hill, and onto Pouladuff)

"If you look at the level of investment that we've lost over the past 12 months - billions of dollars of AI has gone into the UK, the Nordics, central Europe, the Mediteranian." Ireland's electricity is significantly more carbon intensive than these locations, apart from parts of Central Europe.

Good news. After the organisers of the Overshoot Conference revisited the data, they've found that in an optimistic scenario, global temperatures could return below 1.5 °C within the lifetimes of many reading this post.

We have practically breached the 1.5C temperature goal of the Paris Agreement, but that does not mean giving up - returning temperatures below 1.5C must still remain the North Star. I'm very much looking forward to meeting with and learning from experts who share that vision.

Our new journal paper has hit the front pages and got wide coverage on the airwaves this morning. The paper critically assesses “temperature neutrality” as a basis for Ireland’s long-term climate target. We find it amounts to backsliding on climate ambition and locks in food system unfairness.
