If you're a horror fan in the 21st century, the chances are that you've heard of Mike Flanagan, and you'll have heard of at least one of these series by now. This is my top 5 starting least to most loved and until I see Carrie, it's staying this way. What's yours?

When writing my upcoming Gothic mystery, Salome, I was a bit worried about venturing into well-trodden territory. Vampires, or Vampyres, as they are written in the book. Here's what I learned about writing vampires.

Salome is a Gothic mystery novel about a young nun who trains to become a vampire slayer in 1880s Liverpool, so where does it fit in the wider Muldoon supernatural thriller series?

Fans of Mike Flanagan's Haunting Of Hill House or The Haunting Of Bly Manor will love these similar stories set in haunted houses.

In the run up to the October 2026 release of Salome, I’m talking about the things that inspired this book and the characters within it. One of the major influences was Agatha Van Helsing, a character created for the BBC production of Dracula written by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat. It was loosely based on the 1897 Stoker novel, with its own modern spin however, the start of this series began in the 19th century where we meet Agatha Van Helsing.

Salome was inspired by classic Gothic literature such as The Vampire by John Polidori and Dracula by Bram Stoker, offering its own take on the vampire. It is part of the wider Muldoon supernatural thriller universe, a series of Gothic mystery novels set in late-Victorian Liverpool that follow occult detective Daniel Muldoon.

Pallas was Lisa Kuznak's debut science fiction mystery, originally published in 2023. Praised by critics as hearkening back to the pulpy styles of 60s and 70s science fiction, this story lands us on a reclusive colony where nothing is as it seems.

A British character is drinking coffee in your Edwardian novel? It's not as unrealistic as you think.

It just had to be Liverpool. Modern horror stories in books and on screen are set in Victorian England, circulating around London (Ripper street, Whitechapel, Penny Dreadful etc) or isolated mansions in fictional villages and towns modelled on the home counties of southern England. While the classics explore the South West (Hardy) and industrial towns and cities in the midlands and the north (Bennett, Gaskell, Bronte, Eliot), there are still lots of stories to tell in Liverpool!

The truth about running a serial novel on Substack. Does it work? Breakdown of the pros and cons of seralising your fiction on Substack.

Oceanus is a science fiction mystery novel and when I was writing it, I drew inspiration from many sources, many of them not very obvious based on the blurb alone. A starship drifts, its crew gone. The planet it orbits has no name. Survivors are separated on the surface. Exhausted. Hunted. Lost. The longer they stay, the less they can trust their own minds.
