It was the Republicans who eventually became Nixon's downfall. Conservative Sen. Barry Goldwater told Nixon he had to resign. The Republicans on the select Watergate committee also eventually did their jobs. Of course, the Dems wanted his hide from the beginning, but they couldn't do it alone.
