I was looking for books in native Spanish that weren’t actual picture books or like, Borges/Allende/García Márquez… you know, something more at my current level that’s still sufficiently challenging. I think I found a YA novel that will suit my needs

we got these cheap thermometers that go in the freezer and fridge and show their temps on this little magnet, it’s been super helpful for power outages! it lets us know exactly how cold it is and gives you that peace of mind. And you can always temporarily move important fridge stuff to the freezer

LRP I just finished In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex and I was reminded of this part
Nickerson was the after oarsman on Chase's boat, placing him just forward of the first mate at the steering oar. Chase was the only man in the boat who could actually see the whale up ahead. While each mate or captain had his own style, they all coaxed and cajoled their crews with words that evoked the savagery, excitement, and the almost erotic bloodlust associated with pursuing one of the largest mammals on the planet. Adding to the tension was the need to remain as quiet as possible so as not to alarm or "gally" the whale. William Comstock recorded the whispered words of a Nantucket mate:

Do for heaven's sake spring. The boat don't move. You're all asleep; see, see! There she lies; skote, skote! I love you, my dear fellows, yes, yes, I do; I'll do anything for you, I'll give you my heart's blood to drink; only take me up to this whale only this time, for this once, pull. Oh, St. Peter, St. Jerome, St. Stephen, St. James, St. John, the devil on two sticks; carry me up; O, let me tickle him, let me feel of his ribs. There, there, go on; O, O, O, most on, most on. Stand up, Starbuck [the harpooner]. Don't hold your iron that way; put one hand over the end of the pole. Now, now, look out. Dart, dart.

From the wikipedia article for botulism. You can't make this kind of stuff up
>Use in biological warfare and terrorism
>United States
Based on CIA research in Fort Detrick on biological warfare, anthrax and botulism were widely regarded as the two most effective options. During the 1950s, a highly lethal strain was discovered during the biological warfare program. The CIA continued to hold 5 grams of Clostridium botulinum, even after Nixon's ban on biological warfare in 1969. During the Gulf War, when the United States was concerned with a potential biowarfare attack, the efforts around botulism turned to prevention. However, the only way to make antitoxin in the U.S. until the 1990s was by drawing antibodies from a single horse named First Flight, raising much concern from Pentagon health officials.

I love the UK cover
The UK cover for the novel Black Bag by Luke Kennard is reminiscent of a theater playbill (white border, black title font on a yellow box at the top). Underneath, in front of a hot pink background, is art of a person wearing an oblong black bag covering their entire body except for their bare feet. The bag is rendered to look like a blocky swatch of black paint with two small white dots to represent the bag's eyeholes

It's unreal how married these two are
'I was contemplating on the Pongo,' he said aloud as the door opened and Jack walked in with a look of eager expectation, carrying a roll of music.

'I am sure you were,' cried Jack. 'A damned creditable thing to be contemplating on, too. Now be a good fellow and take your other foot out of that basin - why on earth did you put it in? - and pull on your stockings, I beg. We have not a moment to lose. No, not blue stockings: we are going on to Mrs Harte's party - to her rout.'

'Must I put on silk stockings?'

'Certainly you must put on silk stockings. And do show a leg, my dear chap: we shall be late, without you spread a little more canvas.'

'You are always in such a hurry,' said Stephen peevishly, groping among his possessions. A Montpellier snake glided out with a dry rustling sound and traversed the room in a series of extraordinarily elegant curves, its head held up some eighteen inches above the ground.

'Oh, oh, oh, cried Jack, leaping on to a chair. 'A snake!'

'Will these do?' asked Stephen. "They have a hole in them.'

oh my god
Stephen nodded. "Tell me,' he said, in a low voice, some moments later. 'Were I under naval discipline, could that fellow have me whipped?' He nodded towards Mr Marshall.
'The master?' cried Jack, with inexpressible amazement.
'Yes,' said Stephen, looking attentively at him, with his head slightly inclined to the left.
'But he is the master...' said Jack. If Stephen had called the Sophie's stem her stern, or her truck her keel, he would have understood the situation directly; but that Stephen should confuse the chain of command, the relative status of a captain and a master, of a commissioned officer and a warrant officer, so subverted the natural order, so undermined the sempiternal universe, that for a moment his mind could hardly encompass it. Yet Jack, though no great scholar, no judge of a hexameter, was tolerably quick, and after gasping no more than twice he said, 'My dear sir, I believe you have been led astray by the words *master* and *master and commander* – illogical terms, I must confess. The first is subordinate to the second. You must allow me to explain our naval ranks some time. But in any case you will never be flogged - no, no; *you* shall not be flogged,' he added, gazing with pure affection, and with something like awe, at so magnificent a prodigy, at an ignorance so very far beyond anything that even his wide-ranging mind had yet conceived.

Reading The Bald Eagle by Jack E. Davis
The nineteenth-century naturalist John Burroughs, an essayist in the Thoreauvian tradition, spoke eloquently of the bald eagle's range. He wrote, "[The] continent is his home. I never look upon one without emotion; I follow him with my eye as long as I can. I think of Canada, of the Great Lakes, of the Rocky Mountains, of the wild and sounding sea-coast. The waters are his, and the woods and the inaccessible cliffs. He pierces behind the veil of the storm, and his joy is height and depth and vast spaces."

The English Kuriboh cards usually use the word "detonate"! It's normally only used when talking about bombs and mines. But it's also a more formal word than "explode" or "blow up". In your comic, you wrote "blew up like mines", which to me is the way Jounouchi would say it! 😊

excerpt from A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens:

"If these shadows remain unaltered by the Future, none other of my race," returned the Ghost, "will find him here. What
then? If he be like to die, he had better do it, and decrease the surplus population."

Scrooge hung his head to hear his own words quoted by the Spirit, and was overcome with penitence and grief.

"Man," said the Ghost, "if man you be in heart, not adamant, forbear that wicked cant until you have discovered What the surplus is, and Where it is. Will you decide what men shall live, what men shall die? It may be, that in the sight of Heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man's child. Oh God! to hear the Insect on the leaf pronouncing on the too much life among his hungry brothers in the dust!"

After his stress meter fills up, Dr. Jekyll will transform into Mr. Hyde.
excerpt from the Wikipedia article for the NES game Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde:

Gameplay and premise

In Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll is on the way to his forthcoming wedding to Miss Millicent. The game's ending depends on which character, Jekyll or Hyde, reaches the church first.

As Dr. Jekyll walks to the church with his cane in hand, several townspeople, animals, and other obstacles obstruct his path, causing him to become angry. After his stress meter fills up, Dr. Jekyll will transform into Mr. Hyde. The gameplay then moves to a demonic world, where Hyde will fire out a "psycho wave" at various monsters. As Mr. Hyde kills these monsters, his anger abates and he eventually transforms back into Dr. Jekyll.

incredible
From that time forward, Mr. Utterson began to haunt the door in the by-street of shops. In the morning before office hours, at noon when business was plenty, and time scarce, at night under the face of the fogged city moon, by all lights and at all hours of solitude or concourse, the lawyer was to be found on his chosen post.

"If he be Mr. Hyde," he had thought, "I shall be Mr. Seek."
