As a thought experiment, China turning off the supply of solar cells/panels completely would be very different than Russian turning off all gas. Gas is a consumable with a few months in storage, solar panels last like 25 years or more so the latter don’t seem that suitable for blackmailing/leverage

The early 17th century galleys had bow canons so were superior to Greek triremes. The early 17th century galleons with their non-standardised collection of calibres would have stood no chance against a common 74-gun 3rd rate ship of the line with standardised 32 or 36 pounders on the main gun deck.

Also, the gap between the contemporary galleys and galleons was a lot less than between the trireme and a say Napoleonic era ship of the line.

In many areas the German Green Party is a lot more pragmatic nowadays, they have for instance moved to strongly support wind energy while admitting bird/bat kills. In the past this was a big issue for them. Below is from the Greens in Saxony pushing back against AfD (and old Green) arguments

I wonder how globally comparable 0.1% of all companies is. I would expect quite a difference of # of companies per capita due to regulation and business culture. For example, creating a UK Ltd requires £1 min share capital, for a German GmbH it’s €12,500 min to be deposited at formation.

… thinking of where I could possibly be persuaded to use an agent (not from Meta!): Paying for parking on holidays in UK and Europe is still utter pain. Would I use an agent linked to an account with £100 to take care of paying and, if necessary, automatically extending the parking fee? Possibly.

I remember all those warnings in 2007 about criminals brushing past folks on their commute to work and sucking the max £10 from contactless cards via reader apps unless encased in a steel block. I didn’t notice any commotion when the limit went to up to £100 a few years ago …

Not my experience of tech startups in the 00s and 10s. Most folks I know that worked there could have earned more at say Accenture or in traditional financial tech, especially as contractors. Most did it for the working environment rather than their 0.002% options. Barely any VC/CrowdCube funding.

Socially maybe, social mobility wise likely less. Having to turn up in person favours the ones with means - travelling around to trade shows for an off-chance, jumping on the plane for a last minute in person interview opportunity. Not great for say a kid from Stornoway, Truro or Belfast.

In the fairly densely populated rural area in Germany where I have family there is really no option to go to a different school than the on of the community. Schools have been closing and every community is fighting to keep their kids and at least primary school. Loophole: specialist schools.

There’s decades of reinforcing brain washing via ads. On the other hand, the avg ubiquitous Astra, Corsa, Golf, Passat, Polo where never really built for very high sustained speeds (depends somewhat on the definition and noise tolerance) but even in that segment Germany missed the memo.

I always feel that generalisations like ‘German industry’ and ‘its supply chains’ are unhelpful, especially as I see this feature heavily in arguments against the ‘Energiewende’. Apart from energy and some raw materials, what supply chains could they even switch to Russia if they had to ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sadly this comparison just makes me feel really ancient. The video games I played in the 1990’s didn’t have character skins. Indiana Jones, Guybrush Threepwood, Lara Croft all worked well before the ‘cosmetic skin economy’ tried to monetise identity as part of recurring revenue enshittification.

Not sure Mercator disappeared completely from Atlases. I don’t have my 1970’s school Atlas accessible now but I believe the time zone map showing actual time zones as well as true noon offsets was in Mercator projection. Strictly speaking it probably wasn’t world map missing the high latitudes.

I see 3 years ago folks had issues with using Codeberg via ipv6 but it might happily do so nowadays. Could be worth checking this as option, your ISP and local network infrastructure allowing. Does your mobile network carrier support ipv6 OOTB maybe?

… I guess the remedy is still the same - wait half an hour / switch to a different VPN server/location, use a mobile access point of the private or business mobile, or use IP v6, as available. Re. Starlink - IP v6 should avoid the issue, but 🤷 as not using Starlink

That’s a bit like saying Germany leads Switzerland in rail passenger transport punctuality because it has more trains on time than Switzerland. (And that’s the German in me writing this) Normalise for population or number of registered cars and it will look very different.

Gone off cartridges. IMV, one of the positive effects to came out of Covid (by way of a cartridge chip shortage) was the rise of ink tank printers. Even the genuine branded ink bottle set (4 x 70ml / £25.87) works out as a mere £92 per litre for me, cheaper than a good Single Malt Whisky.

Yep. This happening when accessing Google via a University (or company) gateway doesn’t surprise me. Goggle sees traffic from an IP or IP range and simply automatically blocks/throttles it. Just more common nowadays, someone giving an AI agent a task to research something might just hammer Google …

I was wondering too. 2021, 2022 are probably Covid easing / post-Covid effects and a lot was likely psychological rather than purely economic. A lot of them things turned in 2022, a year bracketed by the attack on Kyiv and the release of ChatGPT, not least job ads.

The are counter examples too. The increase in enter efficiency has reduced domestic energy consumption (as measured in oil equivalents) in the UK even when correcting for rising temperatures. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/68d28e...
Domestic
Energy consumption in the domestic sector has been on a long-term decreasing trend since the early 2000s, partly due to improvements in energy efficiency and more recently the impact of warmer temperatures and higher energy and other prices. Between 2023 and 2024 domestic consumption increased by 3.8 per cent to 34.0 mtoe, having been heavily impacted by temperature and prices in the preceding two years. The main fuel contributing to the year-on-year increase was natural gas, which increased by 4.1 per cent to 21.8 mtoe.
On a temperature corrected basis, domestic consumption in 2024 was 36.7 mtoe, 5.0 per cent higher than the temperature corrected consumption for 2023. This is a larger increase than the unadjusted figures, which suggests some easing of the high energy and other prices that depressed consumption levels in 2023.
