U.S. manufacturing continued to expand in September, but inflation is flashing a red light. The ISM Manufacturing PMI held at 54.5, with stronger new orders and solid production. Surging prices paid reflect widespread cost pressures from the Iran war and tariffs.

With some midterm ballots already in voters' hands, the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index fell to 48.1 in September, down 7% from August and nearly 13% from a year ago. Some 55% say high prices are hurting their finances, up from 44% a year ago. 1)

Challenger’s June job-cut report points to a labor market that’s still holding up better than many had feared. Announced job cuts fell 53% from May to 45,849—the lowest monthly total since December—but AI was cited as the leading reason for workforce reductions for the fourth straight month.

Bifurcation is the word of the day in the new Beige Book. While high-end spending holds up, the pressure on low-to-moderate income households is clear. Add in rising energy, insurance and tariff costs and the Fed has a tricky needle to thread on April 29. No rate change is expected.
