I love old landscapes, quiet places, folklore, poetry, history, and the little details that make ordinary life feel meaningful. I paint with a soft spot for Corot, Millet, muted colors, weathered roads, and the feeling of a place just before evening.

"Listen to the advice of others, but follow only what you understand and can unite in your own feeling. Be firm, be meek, but follow your own convictions. It is better to be nothing than an echo of other painters." ~ Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot

I am never in a hurry to reach details. First and above all I am interested in the large masses and the general character of a picture when these are well established then I try for subtleties of form and color I rework the painting constantly and freely and without any systematic method. Corot 1850

My spirits.. ..now lean towards sadness and melancholy. I too am beginning to feel my age. Then, as one moves on in life sorrows multiply, and necessarily it is harder to keep cheerful. I experienced violent disappointments, that I might even call grief. Quote: Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot

That progression—from classical order → Romantic emotion → intimate observation of nature—is one of the fascinating stories of 18th- and 19th-century art.

Neoclassicism sought order in civilization. Romanticism sought truth in emotion and nature. Barbizon sought truth in the lived landscape.

Think of the difference this way: Neoclassicism: “Control yourself. Serve the greater good.” Romanticism: “Feel deeply. Follow your imagination. Experience the world.” That tension between reason and emotion became one of the defining cultural conflicts of the 19th century.

Romantic artists argued that human beings weren’t simply rational creatures. They emphasized: * emotion * imagination * nature * individual experience * mystery * spirituality * the sublime * the irrational

Neoclassicism could represent republican freedom—or authoritarian power. The same visual language could serve both.
