I haven‘t ever seen the vegetation in such a state since i live. All grass turned yellow. Only the grapevines , trees and bushes show some signs of survival after these weeks of battering heat and no downfall.

I think you get the picture. Originally this style was quite common in austria. Back from a time when you could loose a whole vintage to extremes - it was common to have a barrel in the cellar composed of different vintages, where you always left a part in the barrel to be filled with new wine.

While we're slow and steady shaping the next vintage, we prepare for next weeks bottling of our first non vintage solera inspired white cuvée - an homage to our oldest vines. It's first release will consists of three vintages, the next of four vintages, and so on.

It's a shame that these products are bound for only large scale producers and bulk wine processing due to the technical constraints of reverse osmosis facilities. As the next years will see quite a big amount of cheap bulk wine being in the market for that. I guess thats good for them...

Where it says Hammer, there’s Hammer inside. No Slogans, no glitter, no shortcuts, no pretending. Just us and our actions in the vineyard. Hands on our vines, taking decisions that won’t show until many years in the future. We make Hammer Wein in Rust, Burgenland #fromrustland #organic #austrianwine

Until they were destroyed during the end of the 2nd world war. I am glad to be part of a group of winegrowers here who dedicate themselves to rebuilding these structures since 2024.

Me documenting drystone wall renovations last week in the Ruster Apelation Plachen. For hundreds of years, these walls have been part of Rust's vineyards.

It's been quite some time since the lake was frozen for such a long period. Even the parts that usually stay open are covered by a thick layer. Tomorrow it will be raining and next week is getting considerably warmer. So i took this last chance and skated out of the bay into the wide open scenery.

From Rustland with love. The small town at lake Neusiedl in Burgenland is a true gem. It’s houses and the surrounding vineyards and it’s people makes it truly a special place. #places #austria #visitaustria #burgenland #traveltip

Today we finished bringing out the biological deterrants against the vine moth. All growers in Rust are doing this since more than 20 years so we aren‘t reliant on any insecticides for our grape production! #organic #viticulture #winemaking

Wow, destemming by hand. Was thinking about that some time ago but as we have the machinery we destem mechanically. Do you see any benefits?

Hammer Wein @hammerwein.bsky.social · 23/02/2025
Difficult to say. While you safe some time in winter pruning - the suckering and foilage work is a bit excessive. The vines seem to have better balanced growth. Yields are less than cane pruning but thats with intent.

When i started working in our winery 2009 it wasn’t very common. It’s been gaining a bit more popularity over the past decade.

Oh - actually we never thought about that. But because of spring frost damage last year we pruned one block with longer spurs. These will be trimmed once the danger of frost is gone. Curious how this will delay harvest in the long run. Btw: Our average wine age is older than 25 years now.

Such follower numbers are really crazy for anything wine related. I sometimes doubt any of the leading accounts in social media wine business did not buy followers. I mean who wouldn’t? It’s all about interaction numbers.

What was your experience working with "big" social media the last decade? Especially when it comes to building brands. I get the impression that theres a substantial amount of bots on big social media platforms and AI is making this all even worse. 4/4 #socialmedia #brandbuilding #bots

Access to other vendors so you can't trace relation and get a meaningful analytic outside their own toolset. They also heavily obfuscate the html code of the site to make it impossible to parse through external scripts. Is big social media all fake exposure with a bubble waiting to burst? 3/4

... looking closely on the followers we got through this reel it seems most followers are actually bots. Accounts set to private that basically follow 2k or more pages from obscure world regions. Also looking at my Website statistics, it's not generating anything. I know meta turned off API... 2/4

Ironically as we closed down most of instagram content we share - we posted a video that was relatively unspectacular from pruning (also on here in my profile). This video got into a heavy rotation on instagram (20k+ views) and we finally managed to break 1k Followers - woohoo. But ... 1/4

Currently pruning our Sauvignon Blanc vines in the Ludmaisch vineyard. We mostly go for a relatively low yield and early harvest with this site that hosts a soil composition of loess on a base of volcanic rocks. Quite interesting to work with such a place. #sauvignon #viticulture #wine

Thats pretty common in this area. Especially for chardonnay or pinot varieties - you need to do lots of shoot positioning because it's generally very windy - which has it's benefits but the canes tend to grow sideways on these varieties a lot. Having more catch wires helps in that regard.

A people always compared our Welschriesling to Aligoté from France. Speaking of - is there any Welschriesling planted in California? My experience is that it can withstand dry climate quite well. Direct Sun is a bit tricky though as it has little foilage so leafing has to be very balanced.

But the concept of operating a winery on failsafe mode and ripping out everything that doesnt fit your box of structured order is a fundamental flaw that comes from looking at ordered rows of permaculture plants ;). Diversity is essential for quality. Fighting diversity just comes from insecurity.

As winemaker and grower, yeah - the low yields of old vines are an integral part of the flavour profile. But they are also very resilient to things that happen more frequently here - like long periods of no precipitation. Are they often riddled with diseases and fungin the trunk? Sure! ...
