Hugh is a bastard of House Targaryen, though he keeps this information a secret. His mother was a Targaryen princess, Saera Targaryen. He never knew his father. He makes his own way in the world, becoming a blacksmith in King's Landing. He marries and has a daughter.

I tried to make my way with my own hands. I could not protect you. I could not keep our girl alive. And now... we would never want again. If I claimed a dragon, they'd make you a lady.
