No one ever looked at one of my photos and said “what a lovely landscape!”. Snapshots from a life, in no particular order. All mine unless otherwise noted; dates approximate. Unintentional do-overs likely. Main website: photography.hamishreid.com

I’m bowing to the inevitable and stepping back from active participation here — I have too much going on in the rest of my life to be able to put the effort I really want to put into presenting my photos here. Oh well — maybe sometime in the future I’ll be back more reliably…
A tangled hazy early-morning inner-suburban view from the top of Sierra Avenue in Richmond, California, looking out across Richmond, the Chevron oil refinery, and Mt Tamalpais (over in Marin).

A very Woy Woy pastoral (Woy Woy, NSW, January 2026). #photography #UrbanLandscape #StrollsWithAniPhone #WoyWoy #NSW #Australia #MyHomeTown
Three boats are anchored in the channel between Lions Park and Woy Woy Public Wharf. The water is reflectively still; there are a few puffy clouds. One of the boats is bluer than the sky and a rather odd shape (which is reflected in the water); the other two are plain white. The island on the far side of the channel — Pelican Island — is low and mangrove-covered. I grew up near here in the Woy Woy area.

Erko, again… back in the warm muggy light of Erskineville (Sydney) for a few days. #photography #Streetscape #Erskineville #Sydney #Australia
The old brick-lined pedestrian walkway / tunnel / underpass below the railway lines just south of Erskineville Station in inner-city Sydney. The early-morning light is angling in from the far end towards the camera; the ceiling arches up to maybe three metres high. There's peeling paint and slight mould on the walls and ceiling.

On familiar ground… taking a break from weightier matters yesterday. Gosford, on the NSW Central Coast where I grew up, 2026. #photography #UrbanLandscape #ruins #Gosford #NewSouthWales #Australia #StrollsWithAniPhone
The rear facades of two derelict-looking three-storey buildings stand up from vacant urban ground off a street in Gosford, NSW. There's a tall skinny palm tree to the right of one of the buildings; the sky is dappled, unsettled (it's been raining a lot…). The words "GOSSY GOOD TIMES!" are graffitied on the rightmost building.

Early morning, Fruitvale (Oakland, 2005). The old Fruitvale Hotel, looking as it had for decades by then. Doesn't exist any more… #photography #Streetscape #Oakland #California #ruins
An old two-storey building sands next to a deserted city street in early-morning light. The building's windows and door are boarded over. The next door single-storey building also looks a little, umm, worse for wear.

CAFE MOTEL (Newberry Springs, 2016). #photography #roadscape #Route66 #Mojave #Desert #California #TravelsWithAniPhone #TheRoadAhead
A weathered ghost sign with the words "CAFE" and "MOTEL" barely legible on it stands (barely) next to the old Route 66 in the Mojave Desert to the east of Newberry Springs, California. There are power line poles next to the road, and in the distance a small desert mountain range. There's a prominent condensation trail way above the scene.

Winter storm (Shastina from Edgewood Rd, near Weed, California 2023). A technically poor shot, but it does hint at why I enjoy the Mt Shasta area so much… #photography #MtShasta #California #LandscapePhotography #Volcanic #Mountain #SiskiyouCounty
A winter storm is blowing across a snow-covered Shastina (part of the Mt Shasta volcanic complex) whose peak is peeking out of the fast-moving clouds above the much broader tree-lined base of the mountain. In the foreground some out-of-focus trees. And yes, this image is in full colour…

Smoky day off Highway 33 (near McKittrick, California 2023). #photography #Roadscape #TheRoadAhead #CentralValley #California
A dirt road heads up and away from the camera across a typical dry scrubby West Side Central Valley landscape towards some low hills. On the right, an empty sign frame. The light is subdued and smoky — there have been a lot of brush fires in the area.

The light at the end of the tunnel… Point Richmond on the weekend. How many times have I taken this photo? Not enough (not yet, anyway)… #photography #Streetscape #StrollsWithAniPhone #Richmond #California
The view from the pedestrian walkway inside the Point Richmond tunnel between the town of Pt Richmond and the park(s) and Bay side. The tunnel is rounded, with a surface that usually looks like bad skin and is mostly lit yellow (as above); the noise when cars are passing is annoyingly extreme…

Another very Richmond (California) pastoral… (a wintry Ferry Point — and San Francisco, and Sutro Tower, and Alcatraz, if you know what you're looking at) yesterday morning). #photography #UrbanLandscape #SanFranciscoBay #Richmond #California #ruins
An early-morning view across an unusually placid and reflective San Francisco Bay towards Ferry Point in Richmond, California. On Ferry Point in the middle distance are some ruins of the old rail ferry wharf; in the background, Sutro Tower (in SF) sticks out of the coastal stratus (fog); San Francisco itself is sort of visible in there in the background as well, as is Alcatraz.

Matching Tie and Handkerchief (San Pablo Avenue). #photography #UnintentionallySurreal #SanPabloAvenue #StrollsWithAniPhone #Richmond #California
The top half of a storefront mannequin with a featureless reflective golden head is dressed in a checked coat with a (very!) bright red tie and matching handkerchief and a (very) dark brown shirt. A rather rainy San Pablo Avenue is reflected in the intervening shopfront window pane. I pass this clothes store / tailor's every few days; it's full of reflective-headed mannequins like this, but the suits are usually rather sober…

Geometry (Rheem Avenue, Richmond, California 2025). #photography #Streetscape #Richmond #California #StrollsWithAniPhone #SanPabloAvenue
A vaguely-blueish textured much-weathered single-storey facade fronts a slightly sloped street just off San Pablo Avenue; the facade has three narrow windows in it and a similarly narrow door. The sky is a uniform grey; there's a street in the foreground with a double yellow line running down the middle of it; there's also a parking sign standing at an angle in front of the facade to the left.

Grain elevator, Colusa County, California (2024). #photography #LandscapePhotography #CentralValley #California #PrairieCathedral #Agriculture

Another Richmond (California) before-dawn shot from my neighbourhood this morning… #photography #UrbanLandscape #Streetscape #StrollsWithAniPhone #Richmond #California
A pre-dawn urban streetscape: a large (ten-lane) freeway overcrossing with the word "RICHMOND" painted on it; going under the freeway is San Pablo Avenue, a busy four-lane local urban highway; in the foreground a pedestrian crossing across Roosevelt Avenue and a feeway onramp. There are two tall light poles in the foreground, each with traffic lights hung on them. The scene looks deserted, which is misleading — even at the 6am I took this there's usually a steady stream of cars and more than the occasional pedestrian (like me) on San Pablo (the freeway is, of course, busy all day and night).

Walking to breakfast (before dawn). East Richmond this morning, just for a visual change. #photography #UrbanLandscape #Streetscape #StrollsWithAniPhone #Richmond #California
A misty pre-dawn view of an inner-suburban streetscape in Richmond, California as I'm on my way to pick up my Usual of croissant and coffee at the local coffee shop. In the middle distance a freeway overcrossing; to the left, some palms and yuccas; down the middle, a deserted street. Absolutely nothing special, in other words — and that's the point, I guess.

The Macaulay foundry, West Berkeley, late 1990's. It had an appealingly strange facade on Carleton that I tried to photograph over the years; I later had a strong personal connection to it when it housed artists and craft people, etc. #photography #Streetscape #Berkeley #California #BlackAndWhite
A black and white photo of a rather rickety (or ad hoc) looking foundry facade facing onto a street in West Berkeley, circa 1998. It sort of looks like a film set, but it was a working foundry for at least another decade.

A typical late 1980's - early 1990's Emeryville / West Berkeley scene, pre-gentrification: the Hygenic [sic] Dog Food factory in the middle distance, what became the Greenway coursing down the middle (the railroad tracks…), several low-slung warehouses, etc., a dead car abandoned next to the tracks, and a painter seated to the right of the photo with an easel painting the scene.
