Today is World Veterinary Day, and we can’t say enough about our beloved vets! Rescuers can’t do the work we do without our dedicated vets keeping our animals healthy. So many of our providers go above and beyond for our tiny friends and we are so grateful for their expert care.

We’ve got quite a lot of rats in the rescue right now, and we are running out of food for both young and adult rats. We’re making sure they get good, healthy food, after they got such a rough start in life.
In a cute animated style with a soft warm golden color scheme, 6 little rats sit around a round wooden table on stools while their mom, wearing an apron, doles out the last crumbs from a bag for herself. There is an empty bag of rat kibble on the floor. All of the rats are sad or crying.

Everyone wish our newest volunteer and foster parent a very very happy birthday! Emelia has been amazing, jumping in to foster a mouse and several male rats! She’s also taking charge of our Patreon and TikTok as well as helping with other social media. We are so thrilled to have her on board!

The precocious ones are learning to use (and fight over) the water bottle. Unsure which of these behaviors is more essential to rat development, as they will grow up to spend far more time fighting over water bottles than drinking from them.

I like being a rat mom but I’m so glad I’m not an actual rat mom. This sweetie is a champ who is trying to pick up the slack for all of them. She got a special snack! We’ve got our hands full here at @haltrescue.bsky.social !

So there is a rescue case in NY with hundreds of pet rats, maybe 1000, not accounting for pregnant ones. Obviously we are trying to help as much as we can. So I have been driving around grabbing cheap cages from marketplace.

Next in our series about running a rescue - transparency isn’t optional. When animals’ lives are at stake, the public deserves to know what’s going on. Transparency builds trust, prevents harm, and protects animals before it’s too late. helpingalllittlethings.org/docs/rescue/... #AnimalRescue

Many parts of the world are experiencing a heat wave - here are our tips for keeping your small pets cool in the summer! 🧊🐹😎
Help your pets beat the heat!

🌬️ Keep Their Space Shaded and Ventilated
🌬️ Close curtains or blinds during peak sun.
🌬️ Use fans to circulate air (never blow directly on the animal).
🌬️ Avoid placing enclosures near windows.
🧊 Offer Frozen Water Bottles or Tiles
🧊 Wrap frozen water bottles in a sock or cloth and place near their hideout.
🧊 Use chilled ceramic tiles, bricks, or marble slabs as cool surfaces to lie on.
💧 Ensure Fresh, Cool Water Is Always Available
💧 Change water often to keep it cool.
💧 Add a few ice cubes to water bottles or bowls (if they don’t discourage drinking).
🚙 Don’t transport animals during the hottest part of the day.
❄️ Use Cooling Pads (with Supervision)
❄️ Pet-safe gel pads or freezer packs can help — just make sure they can’t chew them.
💡 Keeping the lights off may make it feel cooler and encourage your pets to rest.

Danni here. I'm going to photo dump all the pictures of the boys that I took. I don't have the heart to organize & describe the terrible things I'm seeing right now. As a rescuer, I see some pretty messed up things on a fairly regular basis but only 2 other cases have made me this emotional before.
