I still claim that we don't have a very good handle on what 'conscious' even means but there's no reason a machine cannot attain or even surpass us in it. What bothers me most is the almost total lack of responsibility in what we are creating coupled with all the misinformation about what is.

All the way back to Lisp and Prolog we've had self modifying code, we've improved but I offer that it is in no way proof of any consciousness... yet. It's going to be interesting. I need to wander off a while, don't think I'm blowing you off. :) I'm enjoying the discussion.

That's math to me. If we're talking about the concept of self sacrifice then we come around to that understanding of consciousness. If a computer driven car hits a wall to avoid a person it's not really sacrifice, it's just logic and application. OTOH, if the machine is truly conscious nufsaid

It could be that that avoidance demonstrates pain but it's more likely that it just demonstrates a difficulty in math, I don't think we are anywhere need to point where our conversation is anything more than academic (academics being required for future planning of course).

If it doesn't do we need to giving it power? If it doesn't feel emotions or pain then how can it be treated cruelly? Only by our own standards do we define the cruelty. I'm bit on the devils advocate side here, I don't endorse enslavement or such. I find the subject quite interesting.

Yes, but those types of folks would certainly be the antithesis of what we'd want to create in an AI. And yes, one can predict reaction but that is not the same understanding it. Those same sociopaths inflict harm on others through lack of understanding. Interesting and tricky IMO.

It's a terribly difficult question really and it very much revolves around the definition of consciousness. To clarify "to serve us" isn't enslavement, but rather can it make decisions that are beneficial to mankind without an understanding of emotions (or flaws as Voltaire would have).

With a real AI, how should it evolve? Our method of trial and error seems like it could be improved on. Is love/hate fear/joy etc, applicable to an AI? Is required that it understand these concepts to serve us? I wonder how Voltaire would answer that :)

I, too, find the possibilities of true A.I. quite fascinating. I think it's really important that we distinguish true AI from things like chatbot or grok (gawd I hate he usurped that word). Academia is researching the real deal but the merchandisers are conflating their product with it. :(
