Caturday Willow cross paws. #CatsOfBluesky

🧶 Knitting! At the service center. Car is being weird and my usual mechanic claimed the electronics were beyond his ken. So I'm at the dealer. Ugh. Week 2 of MKAL, and I'm only on section 2 of Clue 1.
A knitted fabric in shades of purple, teal, blue and pink. The pattern is in a fan and triangle shapes so far.

🧶 Someone is making knitting very hard. #CatsOfBluesky #MKAL2026
A tortie cat on a lap demanding chin scritches. She is looking backwards and up at the camera and her green eyes are set off by a green t-shirt. In the background are a ball of purple yarn and a computer on a small desk.

I've got most of my October personal challenge mapped out; let's see if I can bring home a 31-sentence spooky story.

10/10. A fast read with twists and narratives dexterity. It left me thinking about the characters, the events, and how it worked. I wanted to go back and reread it as soon as I finished, but it was late. A man disappears from a party in a near bleak future that still allows for a life to be lived.
The cover of Exit Party by Emily St. John Mandel. It shows an L.A. skyline in blue, then vertical green lines shading into orange lines that shade to a Paris skyline flipped at the bottom shading into pink.

I'm prepping for my personal October challenge: write a short story in 31 lines to be posted one sentence a day in October. Asking myself if it's cheating to plan a little in advance?

Seriously, I just spent at least a full minute looking for a fan. You know, the electric ones that would have to plug in the wall because the a/c isn't working because, wait for it, the power is out. Sometimes I amaze even myself.

Pemberley Intern @hallie.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
I'm going to light some candles and curse the lack of a/c.

Power went out just as we returned from our walk to cook fish for dinner. According to Dominion it won't be back until 9. We have no grill. The fish may be doomed.

A cloud I saw this morning that looks like a spaceship. I, for one, welcome our new alien overlords? Or not. I didn't see any overlords, but maybe they were headed to another neighborhood.
A long cloud lit underneath by the sunrise. It is pink, orange, and yellow underneath and a darker purple-gray on top. Wisps on the right look like exhaust. It is tapered at the ends, and bumpy in the middle underneath. Trees are dark silhouettes against a pale sky that shades from yellow to blue to gray in pastels.

There's nothing like the feeling of stepping out of the shower, clean and fresh, then stepping in cat barf, right by the bed, in shadow. 😿

🧶 Back on my nonsense ordering a set of yarn that I may or may not actually get around to knitting. Let's see, I think I have 4 projects in the queue and another 3 actively on needles.
A set of eight 50-gram skeins of yarn from left to right: pale grayish, pale blue with pink/purple highlights, pale pink, pale teal-ish with purple, dark blue with purple and bright blue highlights, dark teal, purple with hot pink and blue highlights, rich purple. The label on each skein has a large L-I-T-L-G, for Life in the Long Grass yarn dyers.

10/10. Spillover, by David Quammen. A fourteen-year old book that was prescient (re: Ebola, COVID), humorous at times, and still a good read in 2026. Bats, horses, pigs, goats--so many animal-human interactions are fraught. The gaps in our knowledge, the current state of science--still timely!
Book cover in black with a stylized picture of an aggressive baboon-ish primate face, mouth open, teeth bared.

Went hiking in Shenandoah today and was kind of bummed to see lantern flies everywhere when we stopped for a late lunch/early dinner after coming off the mountains. Their VA presence seems to have exploded this year?

Her nickname is "Ray of Sunshine" for a reason. #CatsOfBluesky #torties

Black cat appreciation post of Warlock. #CatsOfBluesky #blackcats
A black cat and a tortie cat mirroring each other, sitting upright on a hardwood floor. The black cat on the left has white whiskers, a white chin, and his back toes peeking out are white. The tortie is smaller and her face is dramatically bisected by an orange/beige stripe down the middle. Both cats look very proper and are looking up at the camera. A black cat with white whiskers, chin, and chest spot is loafing in a cat tree by a sliding glass door. His face is partly in shadow so it looks like he is winking at the camera.A black cat is curled in a box that he just fits. His white chin and part of a white spot on his chest are visible. He also has a hint of his white whiskers showing. His yellow-green eyes are very round, and his black ears disappear into the rest of his curled form, so that the white bits of fur and eyes are very prominent.

Is it just me, or are some print magazines becoming unreadable thanks to the poor layout/design, as if print were an afterthought to putting things online? I don't always want to stare at a screen. #oldpersonrant

After almost a year I finally took the insulated coffee mug that's been sitting in a cabinet since I arrived down to the break room and washed it. I have no idea who it belonged to, as the previous occupant said a visitor had left it, and he doesn't remember who it was. Fly free, little mug!

These books aren't going to read themselves, I mutter, pulling a book off one of the TBR stacks (the "already in progress" stack) scattered on every horizontal surface in my room, ignoring the several bags of WIP knitting.

I keep journals but pity the anthropologist who someday finds them buried in a landfill and just reads endless variations of "I'm so tired" interspersed with lists of books I'm reading and the names of the cats I played with that day.

My little lap warmer doesn't understand that a) those little claws are in direct contact with bare skin b) its pretty warm, actually, and a lap warmer is not in fact called for But, she is purring, demanding scritches, and adorable, so I'll allow it.

My album cover for Apocalypse Sun. I'm glad I still have some face masks in the car. This air is no joke--people north have it much worse and I'm hacking like a 20-year pack-a-day smoker.

A gray and white cat sitting on a wall shelf while a tortie sits underneath on a small cat scratcher. Both cats look relaxed. On the one hand, my house is leaking water in the living room when it rains, from a still-unknown source. On the other hand, a lantern fly brazenly landed on my patio while people were looking at the roof overhang and I killed it, and I now feel conflicted and sad. It is a cruel world.

Once when I was in first grade I came home from school, and my mom had made hot chocolate and cookies. She sold advertising for a local paper, so her schedule was kind of random, but I remember that day and have wanted cookies and cocoa when I get home at least once a month for the last 50 years.
