Some thoughts on Slay the Princess, Black Tabby's visual novel game they made between chapters of Scarlet Hollow. store.steampowered.com/app/1989270/...

Decided to be finished with Slay the Princess. It's a really beautiful work of art, and I implore you to play it.

Terrific vocal performances both, made all the more impactful by great choral music.

It's hard to come away from it not in a philosophical mood.

Without wanting to spoil much (though I don't think it subtracts from the work, as you'll come to realize), there are certain works that I've always felt it's appropriate to commit to choices and live without knowing the alternative outcomes— you don't reload to find out how Kim survives the tribunal, if Bea's route was 'better' than Gregg's, or if resurrecting Liv causes her to repent.

Slay the Princess is not that way, because it encourages and invites you to do it over and over again. The conceit of the game is to go back and try every route, looking for different ways to 'end' the story, while each narrative thread has its own conclusions that ultimately have no impact on the "ending" outside those specific threads.

There are a bunch of different ultimate "endings", but none of them is complete and wholly satisfying, in the same way that no ending you're going to get to in this life may necessarily be.

The Indian belief of eternal recurrence has it that you'll be reincarnated again and again to this life until you discover enlightenment, awakening to your true reality as the buddha, brahman, unfettered, etc.

I don't think it's possible for You to become enlightened, in as much as it's a condition outside point of view. So long as you identify with a You, a subjective, objective frame of reference, you're soteriologically stunted. You're trying to think your way out of a paper bag. Sorry Billy, no way to escape this!

There's a phrase in the Tao Te Ching, that goes "the way that can be spoken is not the true way", which I have always taken in isolation to mean "understanding comes before subjectivity", in the sense of you can't just be told the right combination of words to become enlightened. There's no string of characters so expertly strung together that instill a belief in God.

There's a kind of qualia in the choices you make throughout Slay the Princess, especially on second and later goes around, that are inexpressible in that same way.

As the game's opening crawl says, "this is a love story". I think it's very possible to pick every "violent" option in every single scenario, and still consider that a kind of reverence towards the eponymous princess, in a kind of dharmic sense.

If you've got friends that're kind of philosophically minded, you'd absolutely benefit frrom playing it streamed to them!

Making some cow ears just to finish off that look. Cut out the basic shape in crafting foam, glue them around a chapstick for the root of the ear, add in softer fabric for texture, glue down wire (folded over itself for a wider surface area) then attach to a headband and airbrush.
