Probably. Except there's no way to distinguish a good faith attempt to clarify terms and a bad faith effort to waste time

It's been just under a month since Dolly Parton died. I keep thinking about the outpouring of grief, and all the obituaries that started with what a gem of a person she was. And how it must feel to be Musk, or Trump, and know that when you pass the world won't react the same way

12 might be a bit too young / have a different frame of reference for the Laundry series by Charles Stross. Pratchett is mentioned and very good. The Dresden Series by Jim Butcher is hit and miss - maybe try a short story anthology. On the plus side, you can really see his growth through the boks

Of course. Unlike your examples, cognition is fuel in an arms race. When I ask my agent to figure out what kayak to get, it needs to sift through marketing agents to give me human - equivalent advice My neighbor's house doesn't try to shrink mine

My sense is a lot of pro-AI is in favor of something that doesn't actually exist, and is largely disconnected from AI as it's implemented today. Kind of like a Marxist being pro-factory because it's a stepping stone to Real Communism. Any day now. Just you wait.

I think music has grappled with this - if you hire a live band, and they mime their instruments to a pre-recorded performance, does it matter? It does to me, but not to everyone. If I'm hiring live music, I want the imperfections, the unique experience I'm sharing with the audience

@samreich.bsky.social I just woke up at 4am after a dream where you wanted to gameshow me but I hadn't signed the waiver. That was ok, it just meant that trying to get my waiver was a Running Man type gameshow!

This (not you) is a big part of why the Trump years have been so dispiriting for me. "We shouldn't have unaccountable masked gunmen roaming the streets" is a message we need to soften. "Our planet should remain habitable." "Invading allies is bad." I can't handle these being debatable statements

If you're in an emotional place for intense cynicism... When a tragedy inevitably happens, it will be blamed on women and minorities. Success is due entirely to white men, and failure to "others." Heads I win, tails you lose is the motto of the GOP

It's a broader problem than work-a-day artists. AI is chopping out the starting rungs in a lot of careers, from law to programming to writing. I don't know what the labor market will look like in twenty years, but I don't think it's going to be good

Diana Wynn Jones would fit nicely. Howl's Moving Castle got a Ghibli adaptation, but her work is a lot broader than that. Not sure if Ursula LeGuin and Madeline L'Engle would fall under sci-fi classics

Nope. Consider a car. If you were the only person with a car, it's amazing. Warm, dry, fast, safe... When everyone has a car it's sprawl and traffic jams and endless road work and never enough parking.
