This isnt over. People are still there putting their bodies in the way of construction equipment and being illegally detained off of private property.

I’m a teacher and asked a mom if her kiddo might be “shutting down” in response to some stressors and his mom responded saying he was definitely “shitting down.”

Rode my bike to work yesterday and Two separate times I was stopped at a stop sign and had a cross traffic car (who didn’t have a stop sign) come to a complete stop for me to go. I know you’re tying to be polite, but the safest thing you can do for everyone is be predictable!

He’s cheating by spending tax payer money on things his residents want and need so that they’ll talk about the fact that he did a helpful thing. I mean it’s basically a bribe.

Oh my god this drives me nuts! Your dog might be friendly but my little goblin once tried to start a fight with a literal horse. For the love of everyone, leash up

My father in law is a non stop newsmax watcher and every time I see you on there it gives me hope that he’s seeing someone saying something meaningful and accurate…at least occasionally. Thank you

Yep! When people say “no one bikes in this city/neighborhood” I have started to say “I know drivers don’t ever see cyclists and I have a broken bike basket to prove it, but there are actually loads of people who bike in this area.”

I mean if you are further from the equator or depending on where (east to west) you live in your time zone you’ll be out and about in the dark in the morning or in the evening.

Good. Houston’s mayor is content to have ICE investigate themselves.

The point isn’t to actually teach anything in the Bible. The point is to alienate the families who don’t identify as Christian.

High school teacher in a mostly non-white school. I used an American flag fanny pack in the classroom for a bit (always fun to make it extra easy for the kids to make fun of you) but covered it with inclusive pins so that my kids knew I was safe.

Just started to feel worried about all the visitors coming to TX towns (Houston and Dallas) this World Cup thinking they can just go on and cross a street where there’s a crosswalk.

For sure! Can’t speak for others but for me blue sky feels like the pep rally that gets me appropriately riled up/encouraged to go protest/register voters/block walk. Which is why I think leaving Twitter was a good idea instead of a loss of platform where lefties would have made a difference.

Exactly this. I enjoy yelling on the Internet as much as the next person but let’s not be fooled that it replaces getting involved in local organizing.

Glad you pointed that out! Plenty of research on handwriting in general and cursive specifically (esp for kiddos w dyslexia) offering benefits, but has nothing to do with “basics” or “kids being kids” (his stated reasons).

Anyone else concerned it won’t matter because there won’t be uniform enforcement like they did with “literacy tests”? I’m imagining John walking in to vote with his gun license as ID and his pastor the election worker saying that’s good enough cause he’s know him his whole life.

I think it just can’t be applied with consistency without seriously problematic increases in surveillance. It costs way less to put concrete barriers narrowing a road or speed bumps than overtime to a speed trap officer. If the potential damage to a car is meaningful enough, people will slow down.

Law enforcement BARELY works for this sort of thing. Police can’t be everywhere (and wouldn’t want them to) and tickets aren’t paid by people who can’t pay them and not expensive enough for people with money. Road design is the only real solution. Speed bumps, narrow roads, barriers narrowing turns.

Glad this came to me from the library when it did. A love letter to the great people of Minneapolis and books and native people. Gut wrenchingly topical.

I don’t understand how every Fredrik Backman book is the most beautiful book I’ve ever read or how a book that is so sweet can also so precisely describe so many different types of abuse and trama that children experience. If I could, I’d make it mandatory reading for anyone who works with teens.
Cover of Fredrik Backman’s My Friends. Picture shows 3 friends swimming.

Wild to wake up and think that I wish I had the president from Wag the Dog who pretend started a fake war to distract from his sex crimes against children instead of the president we do have who really started a real war to distract from his sex crimes against children.

A few years ago the NYT published a story about Houston’s housing first and supporting our unhoused population under mayors Parker and Turner. Now they publish a story about how much our mayor hates bike lanes, folks who live outside, and his own political party. How fucking embarrassing.

I went to a meeting today that my city council person hosted & it was just an unrelenting onslaught of my neighbors talking about how we need more police presence to “clean up the homelessness problem.” One guy called folks who have to use the bathroom outside animals. It was gut wrenching.

Business idea: a bakery called ‘Just Desserts’ where some of the proceeds go to the ACLU. And maybe like a little reading nook with books about prison reform.

Pride & hurricane season are both reminding me that we that we only have each other. With anti-LBGTQ violence up & NOAA & FEMA all but dismantled, we do what we can to prepare, check on our neighbors, step in where we can and hold each others hands in solidarity. This is what community looks like.
