Britannia, 279 Mare Street, Hackney Mare Street was originally called Church Street, and the Britannia is on the west side. It was first established as the Britannia in 1790 and was rebuilt in the 1850s.

By 1983, the pub had been re-named Mr Pepys and was later called the Samuel Pepys, before closing and being demolished in 2000 as part of the refurbishment of the Hackney Empire, which has existed next door

The Hackney Pavilion closed in 1972, its last film was Carry on at your Convenience. It was opposite the Hackney Empire and was finally demolished in 1972 and replaced by a soulless branch of Barclays Bank. #History #HistoryMatters #London

The Clapton tollgate, located on Lea Bridge Road, Hackney, was a 18th-century turnpike checkpoint on the Clapton side of the River Lea. Established to manage traffic crossing Leyton marshes, this, along with the adjacent toll house and timber bridge built around 1757, operated until 1872. The site is near the modern-day Lea Bridge roundabout.
