The Phule We Remember: As remembered by Damodar Savalaram Yande – The Satyashodhak
I remember with certainty that whenever His Highness spoke about Jotirao Phule, he addressed him with the reverential title of ‘Mahatma’.

This month's critical question comes from Steering Committee member @h-tejas.bsky.social. Tejas's research focuses on mediated activism, digital activism, social media, and platformization. Find out more here: bit.ly/43DxoDE @asc.upenn.edu
A headshot of Tejas Harad is positioned on the left side of the image against an out-of-focus background. On the right, text reads: 'How do activists make use of digital platforms for social change in the face of algorithms and increasing platform power?' That is debatable. But I was mainly talking about the shift in discourse about caste. The social forces, including the work of anticaste movement, have forced society to acknowledge casteism and caste disadvantage, which has resulted in real legal statutes and policies.

I am thinking in really broad terms, especially the politics that developed post 1920s with Justice Party in Madras and similar provisions in Mysore and Bombay and then pan-India eventually.

During the colonial period, the script completely flipped. Now if a caste group was recognized as "backward", that would result in entitlements. This has continued in the postcolonial period and to a much higher degree.

Tejas @h-tejas.bsky.social · 20/02/2025
In the precolonial times if the state or Brahminical institutions recognized a caste group as upper caste (Brahmin or Kshatriya), it would come with entitlements (real or potential).

It's a great indictment of the Brahminical press that they didn't report on this great social reformer's death and therefore Narke was not able to conclusively prove when Savitribai died. I hope contemporary historians working on that period dig deeper and find something.

As we celebrated Savitribai Phule's birth anniversary yesterday, I couldn't help but remember Hari Narke who left us one and half years ago. Narke spent so much of his career gathering historical details about Jotirao and Savitribai Phule, including the accurate information about Savitribai's death.

Shah selectively mentions the reasons for Ambedkar's resignation as law minister in 1951. He conveniently forgot to mention that Ambedkar primarily resigned for the Hindu Code Bill and also reservation for OBCs, etc — the issues the RSS has consistently been opposed to.

Amit Shah needs to know that people evoking Babasaheb Ambedkar's name in political discourse cannot be equated with chanting a god's name. But the BJP only knows religious vocabulary it seems.

Also, what happens when legislatures have to end their terms earlier than their full term because the house has lost confidence in the government? Do the elections still have to wait till the end of five years?

Tejas @h-tejas.bsky.social · 15/12/2024
The 'One nation, one election' proposal is anti-democracy. You cannot force legislatures to cut short their five-year terms or even prolong them just because you fancy uniformity or whatever.
