Wells was one of the preeminent investigative journalists of her time. And guess where she gathered a lot of her data on lynching: White Newspapers.
A Red Record.
Tabulated Statistics and
Alleged Causes of Lynchings in the United States, 1892-1893-
1894
The investigative journalist and activist Ida B.
Wells, later Wells-Barnett, spearheaded the anti-lynching movement in the United States.
Expanding on her groundbreaking expose
Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All Its Phases
(1892), A Red Record used mainstream white newspapers to document a resurgence of white mob violence, finding that more than 10,000
African Americans had been killed by lynching in the South between 1864 and 1894. Wells compiled statistics on alleged offenses and the geographic distribution and extent of lynching, and tied whites' increased brutality and violence to their fear of African Americans' increased political power. Her conclusion exhorts anti-lynching advocates to "[t]ell the world the facts," for "When the Christian world knows the alarming growth and extent of outlawry in our land, some means will be found to stop itẠạ

Falsehoods being told. Whites sold postcards of lynchings & traded them like baseball cards. They wore suits & took their kids. Never hid their faces. Tons of photographic evidence. Truth is you didn’t need a Klan hood to lynch. Ida B. Wells would roll over in her grave if she read this shit.

Lynchings weren't done by the state as a sanctioned part of the legal system. And maybe they would have streamed it, some people took ghoulish photos, but they didnạẠit. Nor did they brag openly in the newspaper, as far as I know.

Great Baseball is a baseball video game developed and published by Sega for the Master System in 1987 as part of the "Great" series of sports video games. This game is different to the game of the same name released in Japan and Taiwan. An upgraded version of this Great Baseball would later that year be released in Japan as The Pro Yakyū: Pennant Race.

Apostle Town
by Anne Carson

After your death.
It was windy every day.
Every day.
Opposed us like a wall.
We went.
Shouting sideways at one another.
Along the road.
It was useless.
The spaces between us.
Got hard.
They are empty spaces.
And yet they are solid.
And black and grievous.
As gaps between the teeth.
Of an old woman.
You knew years ago.
When she was.
Beautiful the nerves pouring
around in her like palace fire.

#OTD Edgar Allan Poe uttered his final words, "Lord help my poor soul." Found semiconscious in Baltimore four days earlier wearing another person’s clothes, the cause of his distress remains a mystery. Theories range from alcoholism and rabies to cooping, or death by electoral fraud. #tdih #booksky
Edgar A. Poe: Mournful and Never-Ending Remembrance by Kenneth Silverman

Synopsis
“Vivid, absorbing, superbly handled, and completely riveting.” —Boston Globe

“This biography of Edgar Allan Poe shows us how the mourning, melancholy, alcoholic literary innovator derived his uncanny tales and graveyard poetry from his chronic despair, and how he consoled himself by inventing the modern detective story. An engrossing literary biography.” —Leon Edel

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Kenneth Silverman's authoritative biography of one of the greats of American literature, Edgar Allan Poe.

Few writers have had such a profound, lasting impact as the incomparable Edgar Allan Poe. Though written more than two hundred years ago, his stories have lost none of their power to enchant, thrill, and terrify. Poe’s tales of mystery and death continue to work their eerie magic on readers of all stripes.

Yet, for all the attention given to his work, many of the details of Poe’s life remain shrouded in obscurity. A man whose stories are familiar to all, Poe was a tortured soul who died a relatively young man under mysterious circumstances. In this fascinating biography, called “the best biography of Poe yet written,” by the Washington Post, Silverman illuminates the dark life of the beloved storyteller, going beyond the literary genius to the intimate details of Poe’s tormented life.

Edgar A. Poe is the definitive account of the life of a true master.

If you see this, post a vampire that isn't Dracula.
A centuries-old vampire, the countess (Lauren Hutton) has kept her youthful look by drinking the blood of male virgins. Since she finds this prey challenging to come by, she is thrilled when she meets young Mark Kendall (Jim Carrey), who wants to lose his virginity, yet has a reluctant girlfriend, Robin (Karen Kopins). After luring Mark away from a club, the countess drinks his blood, but the hapless guy isn't sure what has happened until he starts exhibiting unusual symptoms.

To Autumn by William Blake #nationalpoetryday #poetry
To Autumn

William Blake 1757 - 1827

O Autumn, laden with fruit, and stained
With the blood of the grape, pass not, but sit
Beneath my shady roof; there thou mayst rest,
And tune thy jolly voice to my fresh pipe,
And all the daughters of the year shall dance!
Sing now the lusty song of fruits and flowers.

"The narrow bud opens her beauties to
The sun, and love runs in her thrilling veins;
Blossoms hang round the brows of Morning, and
Flourish down the bright cheek of modest Eve,
Till clust'ring Summer breaks forth into singing,
And feather'd clouds strew flowers round her head.

"The spirits of the air live on the smells
Of fruit; and Joy, with pinions light, roves round
The gardens, or sits singing in the trees."
Thus sang the jolly Autumn as he sat;
Then rose, girded himself, and o'er the bleak
Hills fled from our sight; but left his golden load.

The Beatles #AlbumoftheDay Rubber Soul album.link/RubberSoul #musicchallenge #musicsky #SuperDeluxeRelease 10/2/26
Rubber Soul marked a new period of development for The Beatles, illustrated by the sitar leads on "Norwegian Wood," the harpsichord effect on "In My Life," and Lennon's character portrait of "Nowhere Man." It exhibits not only a love for R&B, but also for the burgeoning folk-rock scene and exploding counter-culture. By 1965, the band was spending longer hours at the studio as both a refuge from the increasingly excitable outside world and as a place where their imaginations could flourish. As a result, Rubber Soul is a culmination of great depth, focus, and sophistication to create a startlingly original album.

Elie Wiesel #BornOnThisDay 1928 “without memory there is no culture, there is no civilization, there is no religion, there is no friendship, there is nothing." 1998 Fall Convocation Appalachian State University Boone, North Carolina
"If we allow the memory of this century to disappear, we shall be condemned by future generations," Wiesel told an audience of more than 6,000 at Appalachian State University's fall convocation in Boone, N.C.Referring to atrocities at Nazi concentration camps at Auschwitz and elsewhere, Wiesel said it is important to remember evil experiences as well as uplifting ones for the sake of humanity.

"Is the human family doomed because of what happened once, in the original sin called Auschwitz?" he asked.

"I don't believe so. I believe what happened must be remembered because without memory there is no culture, there is no civilization, there is no religion, there is no friendship, there is nothing."
