I love it when my LaTeX problem ("why is my multirow cell ragged right instead of justified") can be answered by reading the documentation.
A text mostly in Computer Modern reading:

\multirowsetup
Just before ⟨text⟩ is expanded, the \multirowsetup macro is expanded to set up any special environment. Initially, \multirowsetup contains just \raggedright. It may be redefined with \renewcommand.

Two months after its long-awaited reopening and one month after apparently missing its projected date for returning to full capacity, the Trieste-Opčina tram, now running once every 45 minutes, is a big draw for locals and tourists alike on a mild spring Sunday.
A sizable crowd waits to squeeze into a blue tram pulling into its terminus.

Helen DeWitt said it best, of course.
You expected to hear Op. 10 No. 1 in D minor for the 60th time, but instead were shocked to hear in quick succession Op. 10 No. 2 in D major, Op. 10 No. 3 in B minor and Op. 10 No. 4 in B major, and you only heard them once each. It was as if after the illusion that you could have a thing 500 ways without giving up one he said No, there is only one chance at life once gone it is gone for good you must seize the moment before it goes, tears were streaming down my face as I heard these three pieces each with just one chance of being heard if there was a mistake then the piece was played just once with a mistake if there was some other way to play the piece you heard what you heard and it was time to go home.

Deeply embarrassing for the JTA to outsource its Jewish onomastics to a "German research company" and not be able to tell that the company got it wrong.
The skier has a surname not uncommon in the Jewish community. According to this German research company [link], Shifre is a Yiddish female name that means beautiful, and Shiffrin – with the Slavic -in ending – means “ancestor of Shifre.”

Paging Helen DeWitt
Reddit screenshot of r/writing post

How to address characters not using their native tongue?

Why wouldn't three Italian characters talk in Italian rather than English? Especially if the story doesn't always take place in English-speaking countries. I have a lot of non English characters for plot reasons and I'm curious on you guys' thoughts concerning this.

For example, I'll sometimes write:
"Hello blabla," X said in Italian.

Or, I might write:
X and Y's conversation translated to the following: "Hello blabla how are you?"
"I'm blabla."

It's kind of like breaking the fourth wall but not really? Idk if I'm making any sense. It also creates some sort of contradiction when characters say stuff that can only be said in English (quotes, rhymes, expressions...)

Because of that, I usually just ignore the whole "why are they speaking English and not their first language?" question. Isn't it kind of a convention that characters of different backgrounds will all talk in English for the story's sake? If so, then maybe I shouldn't even mention it at all?

Obviously I can't write dialogue in many languages and expect my readers to understand everything. So what?

Comment: Jesus Christ I am BEGGING you to read like five books that are not set in the US and have characters speaking more than one language. You’ll are how to handle it.

OP (downvoted): I read books set in fictional places, not the US, but sure.

Comment: If you’ve not read a fantasy or sci fi book where people speak multiple languages maybe read some
books not written only by US authors…

Is there any good baseball documentaries that sort of go decade by decade.

Not sure what to do with the contradictory instructions of "each syllable is equally stressed" and "the second syllable is highly reduced", tbh.
And yet her pronunciation still rings false for anyone raised with South Asian family members. It’s not “comma-la.” It never was! Kamala, among Indians, is a pretty common name for girls. It means “lotus” and is often used with some interchangeability for Lakshmi, one of the chief goddesses in Hinduism. But it’s never pronounced “comma-la”; instead, it’s more subtle, closer to “com’la.” The emphasis isn’t on the first part, “comma”; instead, there isn’t any real emphasis at all. It’s smooth sailing, across her full name. It can be tough for tongues trained in English, but you almost have to skip gently over that second a—not entirely, but just enough so that it doesn’t sound as if you’re speaking in punctuation.

Mike Shinoda???
Post from r/eurovision:

Unpopular opinion, ABBA should not have performed this year if they were using a hologram.

I feel like the experience isn’t the same if we don’t see ABBA perform live on stage. Holograms take away from the excitement of the performance. Maybe have another Swedish or any nationality performer if ABBA could not come in person (maybe Mike Shinoda?).

Thoughts?

Chag sameach! I'm cross-posting my haggadah request from Facebook and would be grateful for any leads.
Chag sameach! Is there a relatively beginner-friendly* haggadah that explains the complicated structure of the magid† rather than rewriting, abridging, or ignoring it? Or do I have to write one myself?‡
*The Haggadah of the Inner Seder (https://neohasid.org/zman/pesach/InnerSeder/) is pretty good for the sort of explanation I'm looking for but is certainly not beginner-friendly.
†Stops and starts, repetitions and recontextualizations of Exodus 13:8, Mishnaic/Talmudic exegesis, creative interpretations of Torah text that blatantly go against the plain meaning of the words in context, etc.
‡If you would be interested in such a text, please reach out! The idea I would like to pursue is that the haggadah can be presented to beginners not (just) as the story of the Exodus, but as a collection of exemplars of modes of Jewish text: it has liturgy, Torah, various kinds of commentary on Torah, etc.

Did you read the original letter? This response is, at best, reading things into it. It puts "settler-colonialism" in quotes though that phrase appears nowhere in the original, and seems to misinterpret this paragraph as referring to Hamas's attacks as liberatory, which is not the reading I get.
My objection to your letter is that it sees the conflict in Israel-Palestine through the lens of “settler-colonialism” alone, and elevates Hamas’s atrocities of October 7, 2023 to an act of legitimate resistance against an occupying force. By construing the Israel-Palestine conflict through the lens of settler-colonialism, you elide the historical evolution of both peoples. Zionism is not a form of racism, though the actions and institutions of the State of Israel towards the Palestinian people of the occupied West Bank, the refugee camps and, of course, Gaza, are discriminatory on the basis of nationality, not color, and reflect the continuing state of emergency that exists between Israel and its neighbors.Right now, the people of Gaza have urged allies worldwide to exert pressure on their governments to demand an immediate ceasefire. But this should—this must—be the beginning and not the end of collective action for liberation. If there is to be justice and peace, the siege of Gaza must end, the blockade must end and the occupation must end. Above all, the rights all people currently living between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean, as well as those of Palestinian refugees in exile must be respected.

This quote is about Andy Samberg.
“Everyone’s getting older. When I crossed that line in my mind where I knew I was with the person that I wanted to marry, it was a very heavy thing, because you’re inviting death into your life. You know that that’s hopefully after many, many, many, many years, but the idea of death stops being abstract, because there is someone you can’t bear to lose. when it registers as true, it’s like a little shade of grief that comes in when love is its most real version. Then it contains death inside of it, and then that death contains love inside of it.”

One of the delights of being Jewish is that every righteous political struggle will inevitably disappoint you. Here's an Armenian nationalist going off in a rug identification.
A picture of "Mountain Jewish woman showing a carpet she wove, Azerbaijan, 1930s" crossposted into the What is My Rug Facebook group[...] In this photograph this Armenian lady is from Arcakh region of Armenia and she is holding a rug of Artsakh design. Since jews with the help of azeri turks have recently conquered Artsakh (in 2020), they are now trying to have the international community believe that the region belonged to them. Therefore they have invented the term "mountain jew". In fact there was no such a population in the region.
Therefore the claim that this is a jewish woman representing a jewish rug is more than ridiculous, since jews never had rug weaving, and still do not. If they had rug weaving, what is hindering them to weave a rug today and show the international community that they are rug weavers.heavily altered. The back ground is erased. Therefore no accompanying claim can be taken seriously. The rug in the photograph is an Armenian rug. There were no jews around. Jews cannot weave rugs. If they could they would weave rugs now in their own country and would show the international community that they are able to weave rugs.
