In the Economist today: “The false lure of factories: British politicians want a manufacturing jobs boom” I’m quoted in the piece, & my views are fairly represented. But imo the piece spends too much time on soft targets www.economist.com/britain/2026...

It was inevitable, wasn't it🙄 Of course the Telegraph would run with something like this👇 So let's remove some of the rose-tinted spectacles and also look at some of that data comparing 1976 with modern heat waves Because the 1976 nostalgia porn is wearing a bit thin at this stage 🧵1/23
Telegraph headiline:

"Heatwave hysterics wouldn't have lasted a day in 1976", overlaid with a bold “MONK DEBUNKED” stamp.

Why do our second-tier cities underperform? Why do we have fewer trams in the UK? I try my best to give an answer to these two interconnected questions. chriscurtismk.substack.com/p/to-grow-th...

To grow the economy we need more trams, and fewer kebabs
Britain’s second-tier cities are being held back by a simple problem, too many people still cannot get across them quickly enough to reach the jobs, customers and opportunities that drive growth.

We have a very gassy system vs competitors partly because no coal, partly because of rubbish nuke build over 40 years. I blogged about it here (although not sure I got it al right): substack.com/home/post/p-...

Whose fault is it?
Why are GB electricity prices currently so high compared to other countries?

We would try and identify people who really need the help, not just give everyone money?

We must stop all subsidy in the energy sector. We must have more gas storage. Yawn.

1. To opinions! Solar is the cheapest source of bulk electricity in many countries, and the quickest to deploy, and now you couldn't stop it being built if you wanted to. The limits to PV build in most places are grid access, permitting, and sometimes installation labour.

Thanks for the good thread, Andrew. I enjoyed the Economist piece. As you know I think we are at a very risky point on net zero politics. I agree with a lot of your points am not wholly convinced by your four choices. Could we not go a bit slower on RE while supply chains/interest rates are hot?
