My ancient thoughts in relation to this minute (of dirty Utopianism) from a 2001 essay in AAFiles (42), called Forting, about the massive mud and turf and cannoned barricades that Londoners put up to keep out Royalists in the 1640s (& the uncanny relation of those forts to imp social housing sites)🤸‍♂️

It’s a great show, first for years in London. I was stopped in my tracks, reluctantly, by his leaf studies years ago, dried, drying, intense pluriverses. Some of the flowers; fritillaries! swell sappily on the vellum, but that red onion, painted in India haha! is just something else. A bodhi onion…

Small & quite actually-strange in an obviously good way as well as, well, yeh strong embrace of estrangement way/s. Helen Marten at Sadie Cole’s in Bury St., St James’s. Series of big ‘canvases’, chunky frames incl inserted ones w people & snails plus (a)typical very free mucking/experimenting 👁️👁️

I fell into and for this, a tiny part of a huge very flattened canvas with v Marten elements, right? As if her sculptural installations have been ironed on to the walls. Or; who else would or does do this? I spend alot of my time approaching things (cities in fact!) leaf-first, tracing/shaping leaf to leaf continuities, connectivities & collectivities atm so take this as a recommendation?! -to at least try to find a way into and/or sanctuary amongst the markings… and mindful attentiveness?

Be sure not to miss Hamad Butt: Apprehensions at Whitechapel Gallery only until 7 September! His Familiars -shown at Milch in 1992!- fill the downstairs gallery with earlier work like this upstairs plus an archive room. Hearty nod to Jean Fisher who was instrumental in getting Tate to acquire🙏

Hadn’t been drawn to the Royal Acad for many years & found -on an Almanac & I scout- very strange indeed. Came away with strong evidence of not* being a leaf-firster though… (the last one is titled ‘… under the Linden tree’. Clearly unobsessed ;)
