And, as for every occasion, there’s always a Rylands Dante edition, here the November 1491 edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy, John Rylands Library, University of Manchester, shelfmark 5121.(fol. V2r).
And, as ever, there’s always a Rylands Dante edition, here the November 1491 edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy, John Rylands Library, University of Manchester, shelfmark 5121.(fol. V2r).
Alt text: Image of part of a page from an early printed book with a large printed decorated capital P and some lines of verse in rather irregular roman type, with a small woodcut to the right showing Virgil and Dante in three episodes from Canto 1 of Purgatory. The text reads: Per correr miglior aqua alzale uele | [H]omai la nauicella del mio ingegno, | che lascia [dietro] a sé mar sì crudele. (Purg., I, 1-3).

Today is the last day of the John Rylands Research Institute @thejohnrylands.bsky.social before it closes, so I’m thinking back to our first Kaffeeklatsch in Oct 2023 with Kelly and @stefanhanss.bsky.social. Thanks so much to all who sailed with us over the years in our amazing cathedral of books!
Three smiling people of increasing height standing in front of a table with coffee cups and a magnificent home-made cake, with large hangings behind them showing a Japanese print of Mount Fuji and a triumphant image from the French Revolution.

People from the proper North know of course that It's Grim Up North is basically just the M62 corridor (i.e., the South). And so we must return to The Fall.
A still from the Fall's video for Hit the North, with three band members performing in front of a historic map of the (proper) North, including Carlisle, Maryport, and Penrith.

NUMBER 10 NORTH
A solarized still of two angelic women with white robes and long blonde hair, one of whom is holding out a keyboard, with a forbiddingly dressed guitarist in the foreground. Red text in the background reads THE NORTH WILL RISE

The KLF always get there first.
A pictire of the KLF performing It's Grim Up North on Top of the Pops in about 1991, with a 'mannequin' wearing a WWII uniform and helmet, Bill Drummond declaiming the names of Northern locales from a sheer of paper, an industrial guitarist, clouds of dry ice, plus a troupe of Morris Dances, all below a banner reading THE NORTH WILL RISE AGAIN in large red capital letters.

Very pleased to report that the MBV lights also pretty much blew out the sensor on my phone as well.

MBV versus Aviva Studio's power supply last night: MBV victorious (, obviously).
View of MBV lights in Loveless pink. Closer view of the band with blue lights.

Just visited the JRRIL Imaging Team, now properly installed in their fantastic new imaging suite! With all the curtained cubicles and trollies it is basically GOTH CASUALTY (HT Jamie).

Our excellent seminar room for the workshop last week, the Alte Kapelle at the University of Vienna. The frescos were greatly appreciated.

More travel geometries: Munich airport, which I now know very well, having missed my connection home twice in a week.

Absolutely stoked that Envisioning Dante is going back to Chicago for the RSA conference! Me and Giles Bergel @chapbookpro.bsky.social will take you through our geometrical reasonings in one of our two sessions; bring a pen (rulers optional).

Went to see Annwn at Castell Caernarfon last night: lasers, heavy drones, 3D spatial soundscapes, 3 Gruff Rhys sets! The live lunar eclipse felt almost superfluous.
Lasers criss-crossing a dark blue evening sky with castle towers in silhouette.

Yesterday I got to go up the scaffolding to look at the Masaccio Crocifisso restoration; a next-level, whole-life-span experience, would definitely recommend.
