#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic I've been enjoying this excellent album today. Not only top shelf music, but also very well played. 🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic Actually, both the Benda Bros were at the soirée, & we were treated to this superb c minor sonata for violin. This is definitely an album to enjoy! 🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic I made a little playlist for a salon at Weimar in 1776, Some CPE Bach, F. Benda, Graun, Hertel, Schaffrath; all the best of the time. And finishing up with this excellent harpsichord sonata. I'm supposing if I was a streamer, this is what you do? 🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic The final volume of Rowland's traversal of Soler's amazing oeuvre! As advanced as Scarlatti was, and he was, Soler seems even more so. Mainly multi-movement works, one can see and hear growth right through the galant/pre-classic style. Very nice! 🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic In the early days of Amon Ra Records, they put out some of the best recordings ever. Seixas was a student of Scarlatti who elected to remain in Lisbon when the rest of the court headed off to Spain. Wooley plays this fabulous, authentic 1785 cembalo.🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic Marcel Ponseele, one of the leaders in Baroque oboes, playing the finest music of the time when Bach & Handel were still working nearby, & Telemann was becoming the biggest name of the German Baroque. This is an excellent album for double-reed lovers! 🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic Hard to find a more interesting clavichord disc than this one! Cerasi is a very fine player, and the 1784 Christian Gotthelf Hoffmann clavichord she plays has just superb sound. Not to mention that the music is pretty fine, too!🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic Time to revisit this highly entertaining tour of northern German areas during the age of the cello piccolo. Very nice music, and the sound of the instrument(s) has elements of uniqueness. 🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic I'm working on 2 projects at once, one is assembling an overview of 18th c instrumental music, excepting vocal music because the scope is so broad. The other is to be able to reenact some early Concert Spirituel concerts. What to do? Motets, anyone?🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic As long as we are on Flute Concertos, as a point of fact, Quantz really was the top of the line in German countries. ANd so is Rachel Brown!🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic SO here is something that I must believe is new, serendipity works so nicely sometimes. I wanted to learn a bit about Agrell, but I also found 2 extreme rarities by Scheibe and some Hasse, one of my favorites! CC is directed by a very young Manze! 🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic During his long career in Mainz, Sterkel was one of the finest, smoothest keyboardists in Europe. Beethoven even modeled his playing on Sterkel's after hearing him play while still in his Bonn years. This is a nice album for Keyboard & Violin fans!🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic "And thus it happened that (Telemann's) Collegium Musicum played concerts »at Mr Gottfried Zimmermann's, on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 o’clock in the garden during the summer..." that & the music were Telemann's legacy to Leipzig! And a fine album for me! 🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic By 1755, Mondonville was Director of the Concert Spirituel, making him very influential in the prevailing music scene. He was both a fine composer, especially of big vocal works, but also a virtuoso violinist. Great now for an afternoon thunderstorm! 🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic In the 1770's & '80's, the Prussian intelligentsia weren't gathering to hear Frederick play old fashioned flute music at SansSouci, they were in Weimar, with his sister, Anna Amalia, enjoying a whole different level of music & chat. Hässler was there!🤠

#MyDailyDose #ClassicalMusic #18thCenturyMusic You may not have heard of Somis, he was a premier Italian violin teacher in the early 18th. His students, Leclair, Guignon & Guillemain, were the major violinists in France at the mid century. Turns out Somis could compose too. Teacher & students here!🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic And finally, JC Bach and his cohort enter the scene. And Geminiani, actually developing a method for English Guitar. Such a fine variety, North Germans cheek by jowl with touring Italians. An interesting time. I hope La Rêveuse decide to do circa 1780🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic One of the things I like most about this one is the inclusion of several of Oswald's Scots Songs from his hugely popular Caledonian Pocket Companion. Most of them are very familiar since I did a deep dive on Haydn's, but they are still different.🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic Making my way a second time through this set of 3 albums, more slowly this time to savor the nuance. And there is a lot of nuance to savor! There should be more albums of this type which help recreate a time and place we can otherwise only imagine.🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic While in Dresden to check out Heinichen, it seemed the logical step to catch some Pisendel while I was there. Concerto Köln sure did well by him, this is a superb album! 🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic Original Naples versions of these Notturni are thin on the ground, but Haydn wisely saved the originals & rewrote them when he needed music in London. These London versions use flute & oboe in place of the Lira organizzata & a few other updates. 🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic Well the snail mail was far more expeditious than usual! Had to do some interesting studying even to be able to tag the newly ripped files, but it was worth the effort to find some background on these super 'concerti a molto istromenti'. 👍🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic At this stage in their careers, the Kuijken Bros were top rank HIP/PI players. The record biz has come a long way since, styles develop and change, but despite all that, for me they still ARE top-rank! Of course, it helps to have great music to play!🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic Not known for his concertos. That's the Joseph Haydn story in a nutshell. Of all the things which went in his favor during his long career, and there were many, his timing in writing keyboard concertos directly competed with Mozart. I doubt he cared.🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic A name infrequently heard, matching his music, sadly. Short life, 1750-1791. Learned his music in Berlin (from Kirnberger!), but his name must have been mentioned somewhere, as he was immediately offered a Royal appointment in the Netherlands. Sweet!🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic I've been looking around for a while for an album of just Heinichen music, rather than the 8 or 9 I have with just 1 work each. Finally found one, and it's realized by one of my favorite groups. They play 1 on a part, just the way I like it! 🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic As time goes by, I discover more and more of Telemann's oeuvre, and it is amazingly large and high quality, moreso than one would imagine could be produced by one man! These Trios & Quartets are diverse and very entertaining! 🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic I've posted about Wolf before, his clavichord sonatas are wonderful. He was the family musicus for Frederick the Great's sister's family, Princess Anna Amalia. He was also Franz Benda's son-in-law, so fair to say he was an insider who lived up to it! 🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic Holzbauer was a mature composer when he arrived in Mannheim. He joined up with Johann Stamitz and FX Richter to help create one of the most influential combinations of composition & playing in the entire 18th century! These flute conc. are very nice!🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic We;ve talked about Platti before, with his superb cello sonatas & early keyboard concertos, & these solo and trio sonatas are in the same vein. Würzburg was known for its especially fine Court orchestra, and Platti was a big reason why! 🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic This is a great band taking on a composer right in is sweet spot: Trios & Quadros were Janitsch's strength, and it is evident here! Epoca Barocca specialize in north German Baroque chamber music, and there is hardly any more representative than this! 🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic Before Quantz, as far as teaching handbooks go, was Hotteterre. Scion of a family that invented the conical bore Traverso, Jacques-Martin wrote 2 separate flute methods in the 1730's (IIRC) and was resonsible in part for the great rise in popularity!🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic It's almost amusing today, how one of the leading musicians in Vienna in the 1780's was neither Mozart nor Haydn, but a Bohemian who came to town and took it by storm! Kozeluch was a full-fledged classicist, his piano music made him #1. Who knew? 🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic Although Leclair gained fame for his wonderful violin and flute concertos, he was no slouch when it came to chamber music either. These trio sonatas are a fine example of the best French music at the halfway point of the century. 🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic Almost unheard of today, but known in his own time as a giant, and later on as the stylistic progenitor of Paganini. His compositions were considered eccentric in their time, so of course they sound great to me, despite lacking the sound of gut. 🧐 🤠

Montanari spent his career as the premier violinist of Rome. He worked directly with Corelli & Handel in the legendary orchestra of Cardinal Ottoboni. After Corelli's death Montanari was the go-to teacher for the next generation of Italian greats, even including German virtuoso J.G. Pisendel.

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic The Elements, a piece I've wanted to hear for a long time & finally got it. A French peculiarity, the short lived genre 'symphony of dance' is filled with unusual effects and surprising music, certainly enough to keep my attention through to the end. 🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic Myslivecek was one of the Wandering Bohemians, far from home, and perhaps among the most successful. He spent most of his productive life in Italy, where his operas (and esp. their overtures) were solid steps on the path to the concert symphony.🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic Concertos for the organ, popular throughout the Vienna & Bohemia areas, didn't much resemble their German cousins! The presentation here, with contemporary preludes & fugues introducing the main works, are played on a organ positif & a Regal. Nice! 🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic Boy, those monks must have sure been musical! A very large amount of the music we consider standards from the 18th survive for us only because the monasteries were all about the music. Hearing this, one must be amazed by the level of virtuosity there!🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic Caldara, Fux's deputy, apparently wrote no Trios, but he arranged the overture/sinfonias for his many oratorios as Quadros, and they turned out to be very popular in Vienna even after his death! The long process of sinfonia > symphony had begun.🤠

Gurn Blanston @gurnb.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic Actually, I didn't expect that Fux had written Trio Sonatas, being busy with his sacred and operatic music and all, but in fact, he wrote a significant number of very entertaing ones, and Letzbor & Co. are just the ones to share it with us. 🤠

#ClassicalMusic #MyDailyDose #18thCenturyMusic I've posted much by Janitsch, mainly music known to be in his sweet spot, Quadro & Trio Sonatas. But he wasn't limited to that. His sinfonias & concertos are quite impressive too, and give a better idea of the versatility needed to succeed in Berlin!🤠
