Designer venturing into gamedev! 🎮 Using Godot as my main tool, with lots of learning and experimentation going on!

Progress on the SHOP part of the game this week. Work is slow but super rewarding. As usual everything visual is not final... But I'm learning a lot about Godot's theme styles and Control nodes! Plus I'll never take an in-game store for granted again! 🤪 #godot #gamedev #indiedev

Trying out some simple shaders here. It's amazing what some boil lines can do to your doodles! 🍵 #godot #gamedev #indiedev

Said "ENOUGH!" to boring work, and built some proper visual feedback. No asset is final here, but it's nice to have a better sense of the game's flow, and it immediately becomes more fun. 😄 Now it's back to implementing shop upgrades... 🫩 #godot #gamedev #indiedev

Testing out some plasticine + normal maps for that tactile feel (normals are still all wrong though!). What do you think? #godot #gamedev #indiedev

Job of the day: Move my Godot "ActivityBehavior" solution about triggers & actions to a plugin! With this I will euse it on my main project (and maybe share it to the world) Anyone worked on something similar? Any good examples? Let's talk! #godot #gamedev #indiedev

Hi Radzik! Yeah, that's my new approach. I don't have many components at the moment but I can already see this growing to be difficult to manage. I think Assets will stay close to their entities, unless they need to be shared (so Assets are more like "SharedAssets") Thanks for the input! ;)

haha fair point. This is something I've always done, I try to keep the main folder on upper case to better differentiate them from Entities / Autoload / Screens folders. But since I can color the folders, this might not be necessary... 😄

Got it! Yeah, I might keep assets (pngs, audio, etc) inside specific entities, and bump these to a shared assets folder only if they are used in more than one entity... Still unsure about this, but the focus would be to keep things independent and contained.

¡Hola Emilio! No worries, we're all here to learn together! I've started by just winging it, then got some insights from doing a great Godot course by Richard Allbert on Udemy. Now that I've done my own plug-in, I'm trying to decouple my systems as much as possible.

Ugh, today is cleanup day in "Drop 'Til You Shop". I haven't touched the project in months, and I've learned SO MUCH since then, I can't help but want to change the project architecture. Any tips? #godot #gamedev #indiedev

(programming is annoyingly fun sometimes!) 💖 Tween Composer v0.5.1 is out! Previewing your tween doesn't mess up with your scene, I added a lot of safeguards for it. I'll start using TC on my main project now, if it's as solid as it seems, I'll bump it to v1.0.0 soon! #godot #gamedev #indiedev

I've been out and busy doing some other stuff (game related!). Godot 4.7 broke my Tween Composer so today is gonna be fixing day! 🪛🔧 I might take the opportunity to continue working on its examples, and a better documentation. #godot #gamedev #indiedev

I came here to talk about how sad I felt today hearing about this news. And these were the same movies I was about to post about - they are part of my childhood and teenage years. Such a great actor

That's so lovely! Amazing! 👏👏 Question: I wanted to make a quick shortcut to change colors, so I could CTRL+SHIFT+K or smth to toggle between graying out comments and code. You know, make everything more readable and easy to navigate long pages. You think that'd be possible in the Godot Editor?

Who are these supposed to be, in the original story? The giants who sink the ships of the fleet? It felt so plastic in the trailer, and the poster is not doing a good job either.

I never thought of that... Using Export is also a great way. Would it be more costly, though? No right?!

I'm having fun! Great blend of retro NES look and feel, but with enough complexity to feel fresh (like Shovel Knight did before). I'm 1 hour in, but it feels like another hit.

Yeah, I see a lot of Sonic 2 there too. Check it out if you can! It was one of those big hidden gems back in the days, where shareware disks (and then CDs...) were the thing. It's possibly the first "just one more try..." game I really played until exhaustion haha

I see many first-time devs working on incremental games, and Steam is the easiest platform to launch. Maybe it just stops there as the developers try new things, or the game doesn't get much traction? I think the switch would be a really good fit for the genre!

Indeed, I was doing some research lately because I'm building an incremental. Haven't owned a console in 2 years (lots of moving around), but I didn't see a big incremental ecosystem on the Switch & PS5 back then... Last one I played was Vostok Inc., but that was 5 years ago 😬

Here's a tiny nitpick I have with some games: that looooong list of screen resolutions in a dropdown. I use a 16:10 monitor so I have to remember which resolutions work best... and that sucks. So of course NO WAY I'm doing that for my games! #godot #gamedev #indiedev
a nested dictionary of screen resolutions, divided by screen ratio (16:9, 16:10, 21:9)

Tween Composer now has expressions to add random values to properties, or even get values from variables! With this new version, I have implemented everything I wanted. Time to test it, A LOT. Take it out for a spin if you're curious! github.com/gurbsgurbs/t... #godot #gamedev #indiedev

Something along the lines of: func _ready() -> void: body_entered.connect(_on_something_entered) area_entered.connect(_on_something_entered) func _on_something_entered(body: Node2D) -> void: if body is [node type]: I remember it did the trick :P

I feel you! A while ago I tried something and ended up creating several "Universal" nodes, like UniversalArea2D, UniversalRigid2D, etc. The Area2D node checked for both and responded accordingly. If you're interested I can dig that up! I don't remember now, but I guess it worked well! 😛

Hey, great video! Yeah, I've been toying with it for a bit and it's super sweet! I've tried setting my tween composer with it, it's gonna be a breeze to animate UIs intros/outros. Can't wait for 4.7 to be properly released, it's got so many improvements for my game.

Guess I found a good balance to keep it in a single component, but still offer enough control for different duration/loop. Resources in Godot are indeed super powerful!

Implemented "load_tween" to Tween Composer, but that exposed a need for a slightly more complex setup... What would you do in this case? a) Make the component more complex to use. b) Extend the component (like "AdvancedTweenComposer" or smth) for advanced cases c) ...? #godot #gamedev #indiedev

Spent the night trying out more ambient music and sound design. It's such a meditative process once you get in the flow.
