Long before European traders arrived in West Africa or synthetic dyes were concocted, communities in Nigeria and Mali were growing the indigo plant and creating a true, long-lasting, intense, blue dye in a secretive process that dates back at least a millennia.

Happy Amistad Slave Revolt Day! On this day in 1839, a rice farmer named Sengbe Pieh—also known as Joseph Cinqué—led the African captives aboard the slave ship La Amistad in a revolt, breaking free from their chains and seizing the ship. Let’s get into some slave resistance!

For forever, teachers in the U.S. taught school children that George Washington had a mouth full of wooden dentures. In fact they were a mix of wine-stained hippopotamus ivory, human teeth—from Africans enslaved on his Mount Vernon Plantation—brass screws, and gold wire.

Juneteenth commemorates the effective end of slavery in the U.S in 1865. Bubba #sunnmcheaux recently pointed out that this didn’t include the Indian Territory. The Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment only legally applied to U.S. states and rebellious territories.

There’s a saying passed down from earlier generations of Black Texans who were there for the first Juneteenth: “It was not a piece of paper that freed the slaves, but the men with the guns.”

Let’s get into why ⚪️’s became depicting people of African descent as monkeys. The origin is rooted in a centuries-old, systematic effort to dehumanize Black people, dating back to early European colonial to justify slavery, colonialism, and white supremacy.

It’s officially Spooky-Ooky Season so I’m rewatching #AgathaAllAlong. One of the main characters is an African-American witch Jennifer Kale, who is a midwife/rootworker. Her story resonated w/ me because what happened to this fictional character—a white male doctor ended her career—is based in fact.
