me, realizing we all could've had crittersonas all along:

a very dark screenshot from Critters (1986) where one of the titular critter puppets is shown with mouth open, the subtitles translating it's alien growls into "Fuck!"

the things the guy who wrote this did were horribly racist and vile, obviously. but i also think it's really important to read this as what it is: a scared, angry little boy who thought no one would ever love him. doesnt excuse anything he did, but this is who facists victimize in order to weaponize

The first act of violence that patriarchy demands of males is not violence toward women. Instead patriarchy demands of all males that they engage in acts of psychic self-mutilation, that they kill off the emotional parts of themselves. If an individual is not successful in emotionally crippling himself, he can count on patriarchal men to enact rituals of power that will assault his self-esteem.

wanted to take some reference pics for reworking my sona, and this one kinda came out great?

photograph of a bearded man with long curly brown hair just past his collar, wearing tinted glasses, grey jeans, a black t-shirt, a light grey zip-up hoodie, and a sleveless denim vest with a piece of rainbow fabric sewn down the camera-left vest seam under his arm. his hands are in the vest pockets, his body is turned camera right, while he looks camera-left with his right eyebrow raised. the background has been digitally covered with messy orange and white scribbles

losing my mind over this child killing queen, who is she

a japanese woman dressed as an old fashioned nurse, wearing thick-rimmed square glasses, holding a pen and clipboard as if writing, and looking back over her shoulder to just past the viewer, as if shes disgusted by her duty of recording anything about a loser like you

genuinely gave me status anxiety until i read that last bit in 4 lol i wont stop trying, even if it kills me

graph by @bloomfilters.plus

the x-axis is labeled "artistic discernment / "taste""
the y-axis is labeled "happiness"

the graphed points form a parabola, starting roughly in the center at the far left is point 1, labeled: " new to the thing; mostly likes "mainstream" works or works for younger people. happy about it and chill."

further down and right, inside a box labeled "valley of self-awareness" is point 2: "still mostly likes "mainstream" things but is aware of the more "niche" or "artsy" works. fights with 3 a lot. feels a sense of inadequacy and responds by dismissing the "niche" works as pretentious or wrong, makes excuses not to explore"

point 3 is after the bottom of the parabola, but only just, and is still inside the "valley of self-awareness", it's labeled: "beyond the "mainstream," likes more "niche"/unpopular work. genuinely enjoys the work, but becomes stuck in a rut of being more concerned about cultivating the image of taste than further work. fights with 2 a lot."

high on the right side of the parabola, outside the valley of self-awareness box is point 4, labeled: "obsessive love of the thing, has gone so far into the depths that she has emerged happier and passionate. an in-depth knowledge but also openly willing to share the works she loves with everyone else. knows the ups and downs, the history and the flaws, and where the scene goes. wants to, or is, trying to make works contributing to the scene. her passion creates "1"s. nobody is here, but everyone seeks to reach it deep in their hearts."

one of my faves, @kikissh.bsky.social , said they weren't feeling cute recently, which is just objectively wrong. portrait attempts provided as evidence

two portraits of a fem presenting person with long curly hair, elegant eyebrows, and lovely shaped eyeliner and eyelashes. the portrait on the left is at three quarters to the left, the portrait on the right is straight on, slightly from below. the person also has cat features in the right portrait, including fangs, ears, whiskers, and little tufts of fur

there's a fantastic film that i havent seen anyone talk about called "The American Society of Magical Negroes" that is specifically about this phenomenon. it has low review scores for some reason, but i thought it was a genuinely brilliant piece of satire

promotional image with the title card "The American Society of Magical Negroes" next to two of the main characters, an older black man (David Alan Grier) with a beard and a younger black man (Justice Smith) in a sweater. theyre flanked by other characters from the film, a giant clock face is behind them all, and theyre surrounded by a void of stars or sparkles

I read "Dreamcast" as "Democrat" I think that's enough social media for today

The cartoon character Spongebob Squarepants, in his living room, getting up out of his chair, tv remote in hand, with a heavy-lidded expression that can be interpreted as exhaustion. It's a raw screenshot of the show with no text, despite being a popular meme, because I think it's classier that way.

Week 2 complete! Studying @lekroox.bsky.social 's anatomy all week definitely leveled up my brain, and this piece came together surprisingly quickly. The action pose and effects were a fun challenge! #art #illustration

a young woman with brown skin and purple hair, covered in several splotches of blue and yellow paint, slides baseball-style toward the viewer's left, wearing only socks, shoes, and a baseball cap, while a paintball whizzes over her head. the background is a simple grid, with the artist's signature at the bottom right reading "Guildmaster Grouch"

Day 11 baby. drawing legs and butts! Kroox's (@/lekroox) legs are the first thing that caught my eye in their work, very satisfying alternating curves and shapes. #art #artstudy #sketches

five cropped reference artworks arranged around the outside of the canvas, all of hips and legs, accompanied by sketches attempting to recreate them. Top left is noted "WOW! bad work, me!" Center right is noted: "right leg is holding the weight, it's under the body, centered, foot is flat; left leg is slightly lifted, knee up and forward, foot back and angled down; looks fuckin' GOOD!" near center of canvas is a note that reads "had extra space. so here's a butt!" accompanied by an original doodle of a butt. You're welcome.

Day 10, studying arms today. kroox has a cool way to stylize arms and hands, they're satisfyingly long and angular, good mass #art #artstudy #illustration

eight cropped art references accompanied by sketches breaking down their anatomy. hand written notes read "oof, that's bad" pointing to one of the sketches, and "these two have very long forearms, but it reads as stylisticaly intentional" pointing to two other sketches

Day 9, completed on time! Really enjoyed how much trying to think about ribs, hips, and spines shape the body hurt my head #art #illustration #artstudy

nine cropped reference images of various lady torsos, some with structural analysis lines on top, accompanied by red digital pencil sketches recreating them. Notes are included with some of the sketches, in order from top left to bottom right:
Sketch 1: "lines all imply motion"
Sketch 2: "line directions contrast to create twist. left breast is round = weightless, right breat is angular = moving, adds to illusion of movement"
Sketch 3: "arm is drawn way back, chest mass stretches in same direction"
Sketch 4: "my lack of anatomy knowledge shines here lol. the spine is obvious, but figuring out where the ribcage actually sits here is behind me"
Sketch 9: "needed to lean into the curve more, follow the line of action/motion"

Day 8 (yesterday), new week, new artist to study, Kroox @/lekroox. more details in this style, especially in hair, which took much longer to study, and now I'm behind again lol #art #illustration #artstudy

eight cropped references of female face illustrations, arranged around the edge of the canvas, accompanied in the center by sketches attempting to recreate them in red digital pencil. some of the references have structural study lines drawn over them in red also

Final piece of this week's study of @fookabit.bsky.social 's art. Definitely didn't replicate their style perfectly, but trying to emulate it helped me loosen up my lines and make something I'm actually pretty proud of lol #art #pinup

a pale woman with orange hair and green eyes on a simple teal trapezoid background, wearing only blue socks. She sits on her knees, her hips facing away from the point of view, twisting her torso to look back at the viewer

Days 3 and 4 of my artist study project, still breaking down fook's (@/fookabit) anatomy in my tiny brain. next is a complete piece in their style, and honestly i dont think im ready lol #art #sketches

eight cropped reference images of hands/arms, paired with sketches recreating them, with a single original doodle in the center of a hand doing a 'finger-gun,' surrounded by hand-written text that reads: "keep it loose"

five cropped reference works, paired with sketches attempting to recreate their anatomy. the second sketch is accompanied by text reading: "I made her thicker, and I'm ok with that," and the third sketch, of a woman sitting down, is next to text reading: "didn't squish it quite right," in reference to my shoddy anatomy work

making myself do an art study project this month in an effort to improve more quickly. I am already 3 days behind lol. Artist I'm studying this week is fook @/fookabit

Various portrait references and sketches attempting to recreate them, including notes that read:
"Eyes: heavy lids/lashes; small highlights; lower lids implied, rarely drawn
Heads: circle, plus lil cheeks/jaw; ears are like half hearts
Mouths: lots of implied lines; little color blobs for volume
Hair: big swoopy lines; strong shapes
Everything is so loose, so practiced and relaxed, fucking galaxy brain shit"
Its weird carefully typing out things that i originally wrote days ago, off-handedly while sketching.

Various torso references accompanied by sketches attempting to analyze and replicate their line anatomy and shape language. A single note in the center reads: "I have no notes except YUM!" With YUM being written next to a drooling face with it's tongue stuck out.
