Thank you to LP Member and Ithaca City Common Council @jorgedefendini.bsky.social for your words of support! ❤️ The LP Guild is so proud of LP's mission and of the members whose work we have the privilege of supporting.
"When I was first elected to Ithaca Common Council in 2022, it was easy to feel alone and in over my head. I was 22 years old, and expected to represent hundreds of my constituents as a part time city Councilor with no staff. Local Progress were there for me; they said "treat us like your staff," and they've been invaluable ever since. LP Staff have helped me navigate the halls of government and assisted me in crafting transformative legislation on worker protections, social justice, and public safety.

They deserve a renewed contract with higher pay for the incredible work they done supporting me and local progressives across the country!"

We cherish this work and LP’s mission. We are proud of the institution we have helped build and of the members whose work we have the privilege of supporting. That’s why we want a CBA that embodies the organization we tell the world we are trying to build: democratic, durable, and solidaristic.

We’re calling on Local Progress management to abandon its fixed positions and engage in reciprocal movement on remaining priorities to reach a compromise and finalize the collective bargaining agreement.

The unit is willing to engage on NSNL in exchange for wages and sabbaticals, demonstrating our intention to find a reasonable compromise at a time when management has attempted to roll back our benefits.

The Guild at Local Progress @guildatlp.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
The unit’s main priority from the beginning of this year has been to secure adequate increases in pay which reflect high inflation rates and changing economic conditions. Meanwhile, management has attempted to cut back sabbatical benefits and added at the last minute a no strike no lockout clause.

Since February, over two-thirds of the new collective bargaining agreement has been tentatively settled. This includes protecting the 4-day work week, fair comp time policies, and compensation for second languages on the job. But after 30 bargaining sessions, negotiations have stalled.

😷 HEALTH & SAFETY We are continuing to push for stronger policies to protect our immunocompromised members, including advanced COVID testing requirements.

⚙️ UNION RIGHTS Management continues to insist on weakening bargaining rights and union power, including a new no strike, no lockout clause.

😎 PAID TIME OFF We’ve reached agreement on protecting federal holidays but now management is proposing making workers work an extra 2 years for sabbatical, which they can deny at their discretion.

⏰ WORK HOURS We’re near agreement on strengthening our 4-day workweek, with improved comp time and overtime policies.

💲 WAGES Management’s latest wage counter moved by just under 1%, which would keep our wages barely above inflation since the last contract, but would not amount to a meaningful wage increase.

We’re in the middle of a marathon (16 hour!) bargaining week. We continue to push for a contract that recognizes the value we bring to LP. We hope this is the final stretch but are still prepared to strike if necessary! Here’s where we’re at on our top priorities:

The Guild has proposed a disability justice framework for our contract, but management has rejected that framework and instead only wants to commit to a workplace that is “reasonably safe”.

The Guild at Local Progress @guildatlp.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
We have unit members who are caregivers, who have disabilities, and who are immunocompromised. We must center the needs of the most impacted and make sure they are protected in the workplace. Accessibility for events is NOT optional.

Management’s meager proposal is in tension with strong fundraising and increasing costs for expensive management-side labor lawyers and consultants.
110
The Guild at Local Progress @guildatlp.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
In their latest wages proposal, management moved from their initial proposal of 0% increases to increases of about 4% on average. But that would not even cover inflation since our last contract, much less allow us to build financial security in our precarious economy.

The Guild at Local Progress @guildatlp.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
We’ve made strides in winning back federal holidays, and comp time for work on weekends, in addition to smaller wins like stipends for second languages used on the job and increased professional development funds.

We are standing up for a more sustainable work schedule, pay increases to keep up with the rising cost of living, & fair comp time policy. We feel buoyed by the support of LP members who stood with us, and know we are negotiating a model contract for the non-profit sector.

Earlier this month, Local Progress held its annual National Convening, where the LP Guild showed up for each other & our members. We believe in the mission of LP and the work our members do every day to support their constituents, which is why we are fighting for a fair contract!

Last week the LP Guild sent a strong message at our all-staff meeting: the 4 day work week makes our organization stronger. While many staff were out of office or participating in bargaining, the rest of the unit was united in holding up protest signs. 🪧

Management: “We wanted to give it time to understand the full implications, and now we’ve had 3 years in a different political context than when we bargaining the first contract, and were a different size.” We say: Management is treating the existing CBA as if it was a test run.

The Guild at Local Progress @guildatlp.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Management: “It’s [the 4DWW] a standing agenda item, within the first year of implementation we talked about it, like how to apply alternative schedule.” We say: Management did not use the existing channels of communication to bring up issues about the 4DWW.
110
The Guild at Local Progress @guildatlp.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Management: “There is an accommodations process in line with the ADA... There is still room in the contract to address individual disability needs.” We say: Removing the 4DWW would single out unit members with disabilities who need a 4DWW to meet their needs.
110
The Guild at Local Progress @guildatlp.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Management: “For management it is a priority as a member driven organization to structure our work to be as responsive as possible to members.” We say: Management could not provide specific examples of when unit staff have not been responsive to members on Fridays.
110
The Guild at Local Progress @guildatlp.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Management: “One way is to give everyone more capacity and time to do it (the work).” We say: Adding more staff has not allowed us to add capacity, so why would adding more time add more capacity? Management would continue to add work.

We’re not the only union at a progressive org navigating these challenges. Many have experienced the irony of bargaining with an employer that publicly champions workers’ power but doesn’t do so at home.

We’re also fighting for wages that get us closer to true living wages, real chances for promotions, comp time, COVID protections, and sabbaticals... For a contract that reflects the values LP says it holds and fights for.

Taking away the four-day work week to address workload is like cutting staff to fix burnout. The logic does not follow. The people who support growing progressive municipal power in a moment like this one need to be taken care of, not worn down.

The Guild at Local Progress @guildatlp.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
Our argument is: our membership has grown. Our funding has grown. We have been doing this work through a continued global pandemic, and now through the second Trump administration. All of it. In four days.

The Guild at Local Progress @guildatlp.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
Management's argument is that Friday work happens anyway, that staff are spread across time zones, that the organization needs consistent availability. We hear that.
120
The Guild at Local Progress @guildatlp.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
But management has proposed attacks on our current contract that we cannot abide. They want to eliminate our 4-day workweek—despite the fact that most LP staff, union & management alike, have built our lives around it: childcare, health appointments, and time with loved ones.

The Guild at Local Progress @guildatlp.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
After 30+ hours at the table, we’re still negotiating and have a long way to go. Some of it has been genuinely productive. We’ve reached tentative agreements on several contract sections. There are people on both sides of this table who care about LP & want to get this right.

In February 2026, we started negotiating a new contract. We extensively consulted our union members and landed on 3 priorities: 1) fair wage increases, 2) minimizing exceptions to our 4-day workweek, and 3) limiting after-hours work and ensuring comp time.
