notice something odd here? yeah that last headline sounds insane(ly 2001). the link doesnt work though. can anyone find this specific article? was msn just linking 9/11 to video games because it was topical? web.archive.org/web/20011116...
Can video games calm shaky post-9/11 nerves?

i thought i'd try searching "recommendations" bc i specifically remember getting a few of those recently. and something odd happened: the first few results were just people thanking me for recommendations. then there was a "results might not be accurate" warning. then there were actual recs. huh??
four comments.
one: "very interesting information. and thanks for the recs, will definitely check them out"

two: "Nice video editing and also thanks for the recs"

three: "Trust is really gone. I can't really trust anything past 2023 or such. It's tiresome. Great video and recommendations. Thanks!"

four: "I love it! Someone at work told me to look up music theory."five comments.

one: "Nash Music Library from Japan also has some huge bangers. SC-0302 and SC-1903 come to mind. The latter plays in the hardware store Hard-Off the entire day."

two, a reply to one: "CMusic Professional Library is another from Japan I like. Got that real cheesy stuff; all or most on yt now too!"

three: "I want to suggest Seppo Hurme aka. Fleshbrain for the next video. His compositions for the game Gubble 2 are absolutely sick!"

four: ah a fellow library music enthusiast heres some favorites of mine" (and a list of Bruton albums, cut off by a Read more)

five: "Finally someone is talking about this! If you really want a super cool label, try Sonoton and all its related labels. It’s got some really nice synth stuff under its belt!"

Let's see that Sensitive "Negative feedback"... (pic) i mean i guess?? these arent even the worst comments ive seen in the past 90 days... like it missed some rude ones that i would've included in that search. were they too rude?
five comments.
one: "The background music in this video is so distracting and gives the video a tense and unpleasant feeling and is also much too loud. Couldn’t even make it through the short video that it was"
two: ""but it is cheap" incorrect buzzer"
three: "That background music it’s so annoying, huge dislike"
four: "Completely bull shit."
five:" I dont get it."

... is this another LLM agent? why is "Sensitive topics" hidden under a dropdown? it's literally just the words "Negative feedback" and "Profanity" which, when clicked, autofill the below textbox. cmon.

alright, what's this now? I've learned that any time you see a sparkle next to something on a website, it means some feature has been cursed with AI integration. 🔍✨...? why has my search function been encumbered with AI?

the datamosh effect is all faked in realtime! it's made by using motion estimation on the prev and current frame, then writing the changed pixels to a buffer used as a mask. here's what that mask looks like (sans the main cube because that also broke in the upgrade...) im rly happy w this effect!

it's a small detail but i really like how this background came out. it's actually some jank polygons slowly spinning, reflecting a star cubemap. plus bokeh. (the colors look a bit different here bc i upgraded tixl and it broke this scene...)

thinking about this comments i got... i actually have exactly one thing to say about moon child: it's cheerful and optimistic in a way that i think everyone yearns for right now. that's the end of this video essay about moon child thanks for watching
three youtube comments and a reply from the author. they read as follows:
from niniv: Would love to see you do a video on current bluesky sensation Moon Child, since the rave-like OST and psychedelic visuals are getting a lot of people obsessed over it, and the devs have made the source files available to the world as a result. Somebody was even able to reverse engineer the stems to the AMIGA version title demo which is the song that launched the game's current popularity.
from furious poultry: listen to this guy do that
from eunaoseibrother467: yes

and the reply from GST Channel:
I do adore Moon Child and it's resurgence but I don't think I have anything new to say about it

this story is so wild to me. a painful portent of a changing industry. i have a suspicion that this experience is not uncommon for people in the games industry, given enough time
two cards from the video linked in the previous post. they read:
Andy Armer realized that his advantage in the games industry had run dry during a fateful incident in 2002: he scored a lucrative 18-month contract to score Ubisoft's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (for Playstation). But...
When he got home, he got a call from the studio: "Turns out we can just stream music from the movie!".

in the mid/early 90s, everyone hated the word "multimedia". it does have a specific definition: text, audio, video, and data combined into a single package. but it was overhyped and lost all meaning. these usenet posts illustrate the sentiment. neat right? anyway, have you heard of AI?
michael grisham posts in 1993:
Give a survey to any intelligent individual highlighting the specs and the
prices, and of course the 3DO would not be chosen over the Jag. Slapping
the word multimedia on a piece of hardware doesn't justify such a high
pricetag. If they don't lower the price soon, 3DO will be the next CD-I,
and no, that is not a good thing.Jim Carroll posts in 1994:
What makes us think that telephone and cable companies know what
the consumer wants? Listen to senior executives of Stentor, and
you will hear the word 'multimedia' sprinkled throughout the
conversation. The word is almost stated with reverence, as if
multimedia is the solution to all the ills placed on the company
by telecommunication deregulation.

Yet, what makes us think these nice people at Stentor even have a
clue what they are talking about? They certainly don't have a good
track record. Do any of us remember Telidon? Alex? iNet?Rich Heimlich posts in 1995:
>Rich, by saying that you are speaking for the average consumer (which
>statistically, I believe you may be correct in saying), you beg the usual
>attacks. Damn, why not just say you are referring to gamers and the non-guru
>home user interesting in "multimedia" off-the-shelf products?

I did. The majority of sound card owners is a mix of gamers and novice
PC users. And I still don't like the word "multimedia". It's still
draws a picture more like Encarta in my mind instead of something like
say, Civilization.Brian Phillips posts in 1996:
I am sick to death of the word "multimedia". I hate hearing it. I hate
seeing it. I hate thinking about it. Now, I like the CONCEPT. And I like
the hardware. BUT THE WORD HAS GOT TO GO. Or at least several new words
need
to be coined that can be used interchangeably so that I don't have to see
"multimedia" EVERYWHERE. Right out of the box I am taking more notice of the
sound card than of the CD drive; the drive is just another drive, and it
comes
with a few more programs. So, I've got a few new programs; my shareware
collection grows all the time, so what's a few more programs? (Yeah, yeah, I
know; don't lecture me. The CD programs are much more VAST than anything
else.) But almost ALL my programs have had a new dimension opened up with
the
addition of sound. No, that should be: ...with the addition of SOUND. No
more beep beep, beep beep, like the Roadrunner caught in a temporal loop.
But
I'm sure that the CD drive will earn its keep. It's just not as noticeable
as
the sound card.

OK NEVERMIND AGAIN this does have interesting implications for the timeline of John's Sega Channel Menu song, though. but I already voiced that in my original apparently-correct-the-first-time video
a youtube comment from David Javelosa on his m1crowave account, which starts as follows: John did do Baker's Funk

i had a suspicion that this song was scored by someone else but couldnt find a source. well, the easiest way to find a source is to be publicly wrong 😭 sorry to David Javelosa!
a frame from my youtube video where the on-screen card reads: "Or maybe it's someone's pastiche of John's style?"
followed by a comment from TheBricksterr that reads: "I'm fairly sure the SEGA Channel music you showed in the video is actually by David Javelosa, with no involvement from John Baker. He has a video on his channel, m1crowave, that says the compositions were by him. He also commented on the recent SEGA Channel documentary thing."

sometimes you'll get somewhere with a reply that affirms their experience + expands on it, like: "yep, that was the commonly understood explanation for a long time! makes you wonder where that came from since it's so different than what the designer said." but then sometimes you'll get this, lol
a youtube comment replying to my channel which reads as follows: to be fair, I didn't actually watch the video..."

i do think there's a funny thread connecting captain beefheart, jsrf birthday cake, and 100 gecs...
MANSTA8 comments "birthday cake is next everyone trust" on my latest Jet Set Radio Alikes mix, and then I reply with the following:
i wasnt planning on it but this comment gave me a "wait a sec" moment.
so i tried throwing together a similarly vibed tracklist at ~100bpm and came up with something cool, but some of the songs just dont blend very well, and i dont want to finesse them, so here's the list i came. just pretend it's mixed ig lol:
CIBO MATTO - Birthday Cake
Sound Terro-Rhythm - やる気なし〜やる気なしバージョン〜
100 gecs - money machine
Koenjihyakkei - Rattims Friezz
Captain Beefheart - My Human Gets Me Blues
Thinking Plague - The Aesthete
Death Grips - Fuck That
CIBO MATTO - Birthday Cake

yeah im still in the rabbit hole. check out this excerpt from 1984(!!!!!!!!!!!!). this is literally what ive been saying. i guess im just 40 years slow.
an excerpt of text from Sherry Turkle's 1984 book "The Second Self: Computers and the Human Spirit" which reads as follows:
But success at video games involves much more.
Working out your game strategy involves a process of deciphering the logic of the game, of understanding the intent of the game’s designer, of achieving a "meeting of the minds" with the program.
The video games reflect the computer within—in their animated graphics, in the rhythm they impose, in the kind of strategic thinking that they require.
This "computational specificity" becomes clear when you contrast the games with their "grand-parent," pinball.

real af. if you like someone's music, tell them! if you like someone's art, tell them!
a snippet from Rene T. A. Lysloff's 2003 "Musical Community on the Internet: An On-line Ethnography" that reads as follows:
After participating in the scene for several months, I came to realize the most important form of currency in the mod scene is an e-mail message from a listener telling you that your music is awesome.

However, despite the fact that we may be experiencing radically new forms of social interaction as a result of media technologies, the quality of these social interactions still depends on the humans that give rise to them (see Escobar 1999).

doin some unguided research. i love love the anthropologically phrased description of "being online" from the early 00s (text from Rene T. A. Lysloff's "Musical Community on the Internet: An On-line Ethnography", 2003)
Even though my Internet fieldwork seemed, in the realm of embodied sensation,
a rather solitary experience, it was still no less intensely social.
Although I conducted my research without ever leaving my home, my work
involved immersing myself in a new musical community, but with informants I
would never actually meet face-to-face, people whose presence I could only
infer from their textual messages. I wondered whether what I was doing really
was fieldwork because I never had to go anywhere physically, never had to
make demands on my body or endure the tangible hazards that field researchers
routinely face. Instead, fieldwork meant spending many late nights in
front of my computer, "traveling" the far corners of cyberspace.
