Partly the result and partly the cause of "Star Trek"'s continued vitality, these mass celebrations began sprouting like dandelions, attracting thousands of fans into musty convention halls and economy hotel meeting rooms all over the country. There they'd mingle amid their fellow addicts, screening old episodes en masse, buying up whatever "Star Trek" merchandise they could lay their hands on, and sometimes, when they were really lucky, mingling with members of "Star Trek"'s original cast and crew.
