Or maybe there are deeper senses of honor than in the eyes of the law as well. Like, the highwayman gets to boast of his battle prowess, and the ghost doesn't want to be undone by someone else's effort. (Can't remember how that worked for the woman though. I'm about a dozen years removed.)
