*Gen X person with the Navigation gene steps up* First and foremost, you could get directions by talking to people! I grew up in New York City, so you had the advantage of numbers and a grid, except of course I grew up in QUEENS, famous for nonsense like this:

Same neighborhood, but on the other side of Main Street, where we see 75th Avenue has inexplicably become 73rd Terrace, which is intersected by 141st Street, then 139th Street, then 137th Street. I guess the even-numbered streets were boycotting that section. Vleigh Place cuts across it all at some weird-ass angle.

The section of Astoria, Queens, where the streets and avenue numbers start to intersect. The streets run one direction, the avenues run at right angles. So 34th Street crosses 34th Avenue. I had a friend who lived at that corner.

Yep. And the subscription price was less than the newsstand price, so you paid a premium to access content without a subscription. The same is true of a small per-article fee. I may not want a $90 subscription that will let me read thousands of articles, but still willing to pay $1 for this one.
