On Windrush Day the chn learnt about the journey's people made from the Caribbean to the UK to help rebuild it after the war.They looked at photos and read books about people's experiences. They looked at a globe and saw how far people travelled. One parent saw her country's flag on the bunting.

The chn had a fantastic day meeting Police staff from Peckham Police Station. They spent time with the chn telling them about their roles in the community & answering their questions. They showed the children their equipment: a baton, a radio, handcuffs and a taser. They even sat in the police car!

The children planted cress seeds. They made labels for the seeds so they would remember what they had planted. After one week the seeds had grown enough to eat the cress. The children made cress sandwiches at snack time. "It's spicy" "I put the butter" "I like it" "That's a leaf from the garden"

The chn had an amazing experience when Animal Encounters visited Nursery. They learnt about, and held, a selection of mammals, reptiles & insects, inc a Leopard Geko, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches and, the star of the show, a Python, called Zazu. In one child's words "It was the best day ever".

The chn are taking part in the Wildlife Trusts '30 Days Wild'. They made a small wildlife pond, nature treasure baskets and apple bird feeders (below). One of our wonderful parents visited the children in Nursery to tell them about his job as a Paramedic (EMT). The chn learnt that he drove an ambulance and helped people who were unwell or hurt. They saw some of his medical equipment such as a stethoscope, a pulse oximeter and a skin marker pen.🧵

The children had a wonderful experience visiting the rescue hens at Glengall Wharf Garden. They fed the hens cooked rice and watermelon. They learnt how to hold a hen safely. They saw hens lay eggs and held them whilst they were still warm. They even helped to write the date the eggs were laid on.

We were excited to read the new book in the Maya & Marley series, 'Maya & Marley and the New Friend', written by @laurahallain.bsky.social and illustrated by Yabaewah Scott. The children enjoyed listening to the story, talking about the themes of book and what they could see in the pictures. 🧵

The children have been trying some of the food that The Very Hungry Caterpillar ate in the story. As well as the fruit, they tried some of the more unusual food that the caterpillar tried...Swiss cheese and pickles! “It’s sour for my tongue” “The cheese looks like Sponge Bob” “I don’t like it”

Our current core poem is 'A Cup of Tea'. The children have been role playing tea parties in the home corner. To give them a real life experience we made chamomile tea in a beautiful bunny tea pot and sipped it around the table together. “Mummy and baba drink tea” “I don’t have tea cups at my house”

One of our families generously bought the children caterpillars for Eid. They arrived to coincide with the start of this fortnight's core text, 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. The children observed their behaviour & noticed how they are growing. "The caterpillar's wriggling." "It is going up again."

We had a wonderful community sing-along to mark the end of term. It was an extra special get-together as many families were celebrating important occasions in their lives: Eid, Easter and Nowruz. We all learnt about these special times in our children's lives as well as sing our core songs. 1/2

On Saturday 20th March it will be Nowruz, Iranian New Year, when Spring is welcomed. One of our families will be celebrating so they kindly came into Nursery to tell the children about how they celebrate, including the beautiful Haft Sin table of 7 objects beginning with the letter 's'.

The children are learning about Ramadan & Eid al-Fitr. Parents visited nursery to read stories about the meaning of these important occasions, how they celebrate Eid in their homes, how Eid is celebrated around the globe and shared ideas on how we can be kind to each other during this special time.

During British Science Week the children made seed balls using a British wildflower mix. They carefully added seeds to red clay and rolled them into balls. They let them dry out for 2 days. They wanted to sell them to raise money for a charity. They voted to donate the money to Surrey Docks Farm.

The children continue to recycle at Nursery. On Global Recycling Day they made signs for our 'big bins' that go outside on the pavement asking the public not to put their rubbish in our recycling bins as it contaminates it.

One of the highlights of British Science Week was a visit from Veolia. Back in September 2025, the children entered a competition to name one of the new fleet of household waste livery. In fact, three of their names were chosen! Veolia brought 'Tummy Tron', one of their fleet, to meet the children!

The chn celebrated British Science Week by taking part in STEM activities every day including a wildlife safari, exploring light/dark, investigating the properties of water, recycling, bird watching, finding out about magnets & gravity, and changing states of matter making bread & churning butter.
Seeds, plant pots, trowels, compost and our gardening calendar set out in the mud kitchen ready for children to plant beans. Books on British garden birds, binoculars, bird spotting sheets and a tally chart for the children to record which species of birds they spot.Vegetarian suet, bird seed, cardboard discs and string in a baskets ready for children to make natural bird feeders. A giant marble run set up in the garden. Guttering arranged at different heights for children to explore how gravity and inclines effect the speed of the balls.

World Book Day was all about our love of books. We had a big book giveaway, information about library services and a map showing where to find them. Books were in all areas of nursery. Parents/carers stayed to read with the children. And staff acted out The Three Little Pigs for the children ❤️

The chn have been listening to 'Pick Up A Book', written by Laura Henry-Allain, for the UK National Year of Reading, ft MC Grammar, DJ AG & the choir from Wendell Park Primary Sch. The super catchy song had the children singing along and doing the snazzy dance moves. They love to pick up a book.

The children were very interested in a walking map of the area around their Nursery School. They found where their houses were and how near they lived to their friends. They spotted bus stops, libraries, swimming pools and parks. It sparked lots and lots of conversation about their community.

At snack time the children tried different fruits from East Asia: Pomelo, Autumn Moon Pear, Fuji Apple and Nashi Pear. They also tried using chopsticks (perfect for eating Cheerios with!). #lunarnewyear "It's so big" "It's difficult to peel" "I'm trying to pick the apple with the chopsticks"

The children have been reading 'The Three Little Pigs'. We had some big boxes from deliveries and decided to make each of the piggies houses. The children worked together over two days to produce houses that they could use when retelling/acting out the story.

The children decorated bikes, scooters, trolleys, hula hoops and instruments for our Carnival/Mardi Gras parade. Some of our parents from Latin America taught us salsa dance steps. Families joined in with the dancing and a parade around the garden with our beautifully decorated floats.

Our sch community came together for our end of term sing-along. We learnt about some the special occasions many families will be celebrating over the coming days/weeks: Ramadan, Lunar New Year, Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras & Valentine's Day. We were very lucky to be invited to see 'Squirrel' at Unicorn Theatre today. We took two groups of children & their parents to see the show. It was a beautiful, immersive experience. The children loved the lights and sounds and collecting Squirrels acorns. We even got to say hello to Squirrel.

Our core text this fortnight is 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'. We will be reading alternative versions of the story and looking at similarities and differences. There will be opportunities for cooking different kinds of porridge, acting out the story and using lots of mathematical language.

The blue sky today meant the children could see all the aeroplanes flying over nursery. There was great excitement. They counted planes as they flew overhead, using binoculars to get a closer look. They recorded the number of planes they saw. There was so much conversation & lots of new vocabulary.

The children were so inspired by the story of Munch, the food recycling vehicle, that the following day they wanted to name the Nursery recycling vehicles Munch. It was a good opportunity develop marking skills & scissor skills. The children acted out a story of the vehicles collecting food waste.

We had a special visit from the Education Outreach Team at Southwark Veolia. They read 'Munch and the Funny Tummy', a story about a recycling vehicle called Munch that is fed the wrong kind of recycling and things go wrong! Luckily the recycling crew helped Munch and he was back on the road again.

Today was Christmas lunch day. A very special day when the children and all the staff eat together. The table was set beautifully. We had turkey, vegetarian wellington, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, vegetables and gravy. The children loved pulling their crackers and wearing their party hats 🎄

We had our end of term sing-along today. Children, families and staff all sang Christmas songs together. As well as singing a song in Yoruba we sang in Spanish and Arabic too. Afterwards we enjoyed German spiced biscuits and mulled apple juice, hook a bauble and making eco-Christmas decorations.

We had two special visitors today. Santa 1 and Santa 2. The children were so thrilled to see Santa they showed him their toys in the nursery before he even got to the grotto. As well as meeting the children in the grotto, Santa had a game of football and an impromptu Santa disco. Two top Santa's ❤️

The children had a magical experience watching How Does Santa Go Down The Chimney at Unicorn Theatre in London Bridge. It was wonderful to see them laugh at the jokes and smile at the beautiful snowy and sparkly special effects. Thank you to Unicorn Theatre for their generosity ❤️

The children helped build a bug hotel made entirely of reclaimed materials: wooden pallets, old wonky wooden construction blocks, egg boxes and cardboard tubes. They searched the garden for logs, sticks and leaves to stuff in the gaps. "I got sticks" "Will snails live here?" "Is that the bedroom?"

We are winners!! Names thought of by our children were picked as names for three of Veolia's fleet of waste food recycling trucks. Gizmo, TummyTron and Chewball will be collecting food waste from homes in Southwark. Well done to the children ♻️ 🚛 ♻️

Sarah and Claire, our teachers, spoke at the #NurseryWorldConference and shared different ways we support children at The Grove, now and for their futures. They spoke about knowing our community, developing the whole child, building an inclusive curriculum and putting sustainability into action.

The chn studied the work of British artist Frank Bowling. Born in British Guiana in 1934, he moved to London in 1953. He still has a working studio not far from The Grove. The chn watched a video by the Tate on his different techniques and worked together for a week to produce a large-scale artwork.
