✉️ [beta] Site updates #changelog beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/1215589…
Changes to the site this week: September 28, 2026: API BUGFIX: Calling /updatemember without the member_labels parameter removed all of the member's labels. The labels are now left unchanged when member_labels is omitted; to remove all labels, send a single empty member_labels value. API BUGFIX: When /updatemember was used to create more than one new label at once, every new label got the first name in new_label_names, so only one was created. Each new_ ID in member_labels now uses its own name, color, and description. If a label with that name already exists in the group, it is assigned instead of failing. API BUGFIX: /getmember, /getmembers, and /updatemember never included the member_labels field in the member info object, even when the member had labels. They now return it for callers with the manage members permission. September 29, 2026: BUGFIX: In dark mode, the plain text and Markdown message editors showed dark text on a dark background, making it very hard to see what you were typing. Typed text is now shown in a light color. BUGFIX: When composing in plain text or Markdown with a signature turned on, reopening a saved reply draft showed only your signature instead of the draft, and the next autosave replaced the draft with just the signature. Reopened reply drafts now show their saved text. This affected all groups set to plain text only. BUGFIX: Fastmail users subscribed to a group's calendar feed stopped getting updates, because Fastmail's calendar service was mistakenly treated as an outdated web browser and sent a web page instead of the calendar. Calendar feeds now sync to Fastmail again. The same mistake could also block other apps whose browser identification included punctuation after the version number. BUGFIX: Creating the first subgroup of a group appeared to do nothing: the page stayed where it was, even though the subgroup had been created. Creating later subgroups went to the new subgroup's page, but the sidebar kept pointing at the parent group, so choosing Settings from the sidebar could lead to deleting the parent group instead of the new subgroup. Creating a subgroup now fully loads the new subgroup, sidebar included. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: After renaming a group or subgroup in Settings, most of the sidebar links still used the old name and led to an error page. The page now fully reloads after a rename, so the sidebar uses the new name. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: After deleting a subgroup, you were taken to whichever of your groups pages you had last visited. You're now taken to the parent group. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On the Create Subgroup page, if there was a problem with the address or description, the subgroup address and visibility you had entered were cleared. They are now kept, and if the address is the problem, the cursor is placed in the address field. beta.groups.io CHANGE: When working with a subgroup, the delete button in Settings, the Delete page, and the confirmation dialog now say "Delete Subgroup" and refer to the subgroup, making it clearer which one you're about to delete. "THIS ACTION CANNOT BE UNDONE." is now also shown in bold on the Delete page. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The Muted Hashtags and Followed Hashtags pages showed a "Your Groups" link in their breadcrumb that actually took you to your Feed. On phones, it was the only part of the breadcrumb shown. Those pages now show just their own name, like the other pages in your account's sidebar. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The Mute Hashtag, Follow Hashtag, and Unmute Hashtag pages now have a breadcrumb that links back to your Muted Hashtags or Followed Hashtags list. BUGFIX: The "Your Activity" heading on your account's Activity page was always shown in English. It is now translated. BUGFIX: Downloading a large file from a group's Files section over a slower connection could fail partway through with a "Network error", usually after a couple of minutes. It wasn't a size limit: our servers were cutting off any download that ran longer than that. Downloads now run until they finish. The same problem could also interrupt slow uploads of large files. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: An interrupted download from a group's Files section could not be resumed; your browser's Resume button started the download over from the beginning. Downloads can now be resumed where they left off, and your browser now shows the file size and time remaining while downloading. beta.groups.io INTERNAL: blockerd now blocks IP addresses with firewall sets on the load balancers instead of an nginx deny list, so adding or removing a block no longer reloads nginx. September 30, 2026: BUGFIX: If you were set to show 50 or 100 items per page and edited a topic's properties from the second or later page of Topics, clicking Update returned you to Topics showing only 20 topics per page, and paging kept using 20 until you left Topics. Your per-page setting is now kept. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On the Edit Topic Properties page, Cancel always took you to the topic, even if you had come from the Topics list or search results. Update from a topic's own page took you to the first page of Topics instead of back to the topic. Both Cancel and Update now return you to where you came from. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Members of a group that requires two-factor authentication, who hadn't set it up yet, couldn't add a passkey. It failed with errors such as "Failed to add passkey: The string did not match the expected pattern." Adding a passkey now works for them. CHANGE: A passkey now counts as two-factor authentication. Adding one satisfies a group's two-factor requirement, just like an authentication app, and the page asking you to set up two-factor now offers both options. If you have a passkey, you can turn off your authentication app even when a group requires two-factor. You can't delete your last passkey while a group requires two-factor and you have no authentication app. CHANGE: If your only second factor is a passkey, logging in with your password, a login link, or single sign-on now also asks for your passkey, or for one of your recovery codes, before you're logged in. Previously your password alone was enough. Passkeys only work on the site where you added them, so if you added yours on another site (for example, groups.io rather than your organization's own address), you're offered a button to confirm it there. As with authentication apps, logging in with Google or Facebook is no longer allowed for accounts with a passkey. CHANGE: Logging in with a passkey now always requires your device's fingerprint, face, or PIN. Security keys without a PIN set can no longer be used to log in. API CHANGE: For accounts whose only second factor is a passkey, /login and /authenticateloginlink now return 2nd_factor_required; supply one of the account's recovery codes in twofactor. /googleloginfinal and /facebookloginfinal now refuse these accounts, as they already do for accounts with an authentication app. INTERNAL: Disabling two-factor from the support queue or admin now also removes the account's passkeys, and the support queue offers it for accounts that only have passkeys. October 1, 2026: BUGFIX: Image descriptions (alt text) containing common punctuation, such as a colon, question mark, ampersand, curly quotation marks, or a curly apostrophe, were silently removed from images in wiki pages and messages, and saving the page again lost them for good. Screen readers then had nothing to read for those images. Descriptions with punctuation are now kept. Descriptions that were already removed can't be restored and need to be entered again. BUGFIX: After entering a wrong two-factor or recovery code when logging in, entering the correct code sent you back to the start of login instead of logging you in. You can now try again with the correct code. October 2, 2026: BUGFIX: Messages sent to a group from Proton Mail, and occasionally from other email providers, were sometimes bounced with "Invalid request, no reverse DNS", even though the sending server was set up correctly. It happened when a lookup of the sending server's name briefly failed on our end. A brief lookup failure now asks the sending server to try again later instead of bouncing the message, and we check with a second, independent DNS service before treating the lookup as failed. BUGFIX: Since September 30, some messages sent to a group from iCloud (me.com, icloud.com, mac.com) were delivered with a large block of raw, encoded text instead of the formatted message, and failed DKIM checks at Gmail. iCloud began adding stray characters to one of its message headers, and we passed them on to members, which made Gmail and other email programs think the headers ended early. We now remove those characters when a message arrives, so iCloud messages display normally. BUGFIX: When a member's Yahoo Mail account automatically forwarded to another address that rejected the message, the bounce recorded for the member just said "5.0.0", with no hint of the real cause. Yahoo had changed the format of these forwarding failure notices. The bounce now shows the forwarding address and the reason it was rejected, for example that the account doesn't exist, so members and moderators can tell that the problem is the forward and not the member's Yahoo address. BUGFIX: When sending a message to a member from their member page, clicking Discard took you to the group's home page, even though sending took you back to the member page. Discard now returns you to the page you started from: the member page, the Members list, an RSVP or poll responses list, or a chat. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The Bcc: Me and Bcc: All Moderators checkboxes on the Send Message page, and the BCC Me checkbox when replying to the sender or the moderators of a topic, still had the old look. They now match the site's other checkboxes, and clicking the Bcc: Me and Bcc: All Moderators labels on the Send Message page now toggles their checkboxes. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: When a member with a group signature replied by email from a program that doesn't mark the earlier message as a quote, such as Samsung Email or Outlook, their signature was hidden on the website in the collapsed "..." along with the earlier message, because the signature was added at the very end, after the earlier message. When a reply is written above the earlier message, the signature is now added between the reply and the earlier message, where email programs put signatures. A signature that still ends up after the earlier message is now recognized and shown. Messages already posted are unchanged. beta.groups.io The next #changelog will be published on October 9, 2026. Take care everyone. Mark

Groups.io Updates @groups.io · 25/09/2026
✉️ [beta] Site updates #changelog beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/1214309…
Changes to the site this week: September 21, 2026: DOCS: Updates from Nina. [Revision History] BUGFIX: Clicking an invite link while logged in failed with a "logged in as another user" error when the invitation had been sent to one of your email aliases rather than your primary address, and logging out did not help because the link logged you straight back in. Invitations sent to any of your aliases can now be accepted from the website. September 22, 2026: CHANGE: Digest and daily summary sender names could be ambiguous when different groups used the same subgroup name. They now use the standard breadcrumb naming, such as Beta | Main Digest and Beta | Main Summary. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The Actions menu on Your Groups could open behind the top navigation bar when only a few groups were listed, hiding some options. It now opens downward by default and flips upward when needed. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Pasting a plain-text URL into the online editor automatically made it clickable, which complicated editing the URL before linking it. Restored the previous behavior: pasted plain-text URLs remain editable text until you press Space or Enter, or use Insert Link. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Changed the fourth and final batch of web pages from Bootstrap 3 to Bootstrap 5: the Messages pages (topics, messages, threads, search, hashtag pages, polls, drafts, posting and editing), the mute and follow pages, subscription settings and member notices, your home page and feed, your groups list, your calendar, account settings, login, registration and two-factor pages, profiles, the help center and API documentation, and the site chrome shared by every page (header, menus, sidebars, dialogs). This is plumbing, not a redesign; the pages should look and behave as before. With this batch the whole site is on Bootstrap 5 and the old framework is gone. NEW: Adding a calendar event to Google Calendar required downloading an ICS file and importing it by hand. The Add to Calendar button on an event's page is now a menu with two choices: Google Calendar, which opens Google Calendar with the event already filled in so you can review it and save it, and Download ICS file, which works as before. For repeating events, the Google option adds the occurrence you're viewing and the ICS file still contains the entire series. Event notification emails for events that don't repeat now include an Add to Google Calendar link too, and their calendar link is now labeled Download ICS file. Events you add this way are separate copies that don't receive later changes. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Event pages now include a Subscribe to group calendar button for members who can subscribe, so you can follow all of a group's events, including later changes, without going back to the calendar page. The subscription dialog on both pages now includes step-by-step instructions for Google Calendar. BUGFIX: When viewing a single message, the previous/next arrows and message number in the upper right sat slightly lower than the Msg # box and the buttons on the left. They now line up. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On the edit photo and edit album pages, the Cancel button came before the Update button, the reverse of the Database pages and the rest of the site. The update button now comes first, followed by Cancel. Also, on a database's settings page, the Delete Table button sat between Update and Cancel; it now sits on the right side, like the Delete button when editing a row. beta.groups.io September 23, 2026: BUGFIX: When viewing a single message, the current message number between the previous/next arrows was still shown as plain grey text, unlike the current page in the site's other page navigation, which is now highlighted in blue. The message number is now highlighted the same way, both above and below the message. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Changing a database table's structure, such as adding, editing, or deleting a column, changed the Updated date of every row in the table to the date of the change. A row's Updated date now changes only when that row's values are edited. Rows whose dates were already changed can't be restored. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Giving a moderator most or all permissions meant clicking up to 15 checkboxes one at a time on the member's page. The Moderator Permissions section now has Check All and Uncheck All links, so you can start from everything and remove a few, or start from nothing and add a few. The Moderator Notifications section also has a new Set All To menu that sets every moderator notification (email and web/app, email only, web/app only, or none) at once; you can still adjust individual settings afterward. Nothing is saved until you click Save. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On a member's page, changing someone's role from Owner to Moderator hid the Pending Members notification setting even when they still had the Approve Pending Members permission. It now stays visible whenever that permission is checked. CHANGE: Sub-albums were hard to tell apart from top-level photo albums. The album list in the Move dialog on a photo's page showed every album by its title alone, in one alphabetical list. It now shows each sub-album's full path, such as Trips › Scotland, listed directly under its parent album. Notifications for a new sub-album now say it is a sub-album and link to the album that contains it. The album summaries on the Photos pages now say 1 sub-album instead of 1 album. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: In a group's Activity log, choosing a different category (such as Message Activity or Member Activity) while an action from the All actions menu was selected changed the button label but kept listing the same entries. Choosing a category now shows that category's activity. If the selected action belongs to the new category, the action filter stays; otherwise, the menu resets to All actions. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The Insert Images dialog in the online editor accepted any type of file, including videos. A video inserted this way could look like a working inline image in Safari, but the posted message contained a broken image that pointed to a link that stopped working once the message was sent. The dialog now accepts only images, and the site no longer inserts non-image files into the body of a message. To share a video, add it as an attachment. CHANGE: Your subscription settings page now has the same Set All To menu at the top of the Moderator Notifications section as a member's page, so moderators and owners can set all of their own moderator notifications (email and web/app, email only, web/app only, or none) at once. You can still adjust individual settings afterward, and nothing is saved until you click Save. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: After reading an expanded topic, pressing the browser's Back button scrolled the page back up through the topic's messages before switching to the Topics list, instead of returning immediately. Back now returns to the list right away, as before. beta.groups.io CHANGE: When deleting a group, subgroup, account, or wiki page, the Delete button could be clicked before I understand had been entered, or with text that didn't match (such as I understand: with the colon copied from the prompt). The page then reloaded without deleting anything or explaining why. The Delete button now stays disabled until I understand is entered; capitalization and extra spaces don't matter. The prompt now reads "enter I understand below:", which keeps the colon away from the phrase. Also, pressing Enter in the I understand box on the account deletion page could switch your subscriptions to HTML Digest; it now presses the Delete button, and only once that button is enabled. beta.groups.io CHANGE: HTML digests were larger than they needed to be. Gmail cuts off any message over about 102KB and shows a "View entire message" link, and a digest could reach that size after only five or six messages. Everything after the cut was missing, including the messages that the Topics in this digest links jump to. Digests are now about 40% smaller, so many more messages fit before Gmail cuts them off. Digests look exactly the same as before. BUGFIX: Hovering over a hashtag next to a topic's subject, on the topic and message pages, made it lose its color and show dark text, which was unreadable in dark mode. Hashtags keep their color when you hover over them or open their menu. Hashtags in topic lists also no longer change to the link color on hover. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: In your feed, hashtags in Active Topics were shown as link-colored text on a colored background, which was hard to read in light mode, and long hashtag names could break across lines. They are now shown as colored hashtag badges, as in the rest of the site. The badge for members whose first messages are moderated read NuM; it now reads NMM with the tooltip New Member Moderated, as on the members pages. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: When replying to a message, the Discard button sat right next to Send. It is back on the right side of the reply form. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On the new topic and reply forms, the Send As Special Notice checkbox still had the old style. It now matches the site's other checkboxes. The checkboxes in the Add Hashtags dialog (on the new topic, edit topic, add event, and edit pending message pages) also now have the current style, clicking a hashtag's name now checks it, and the dialog's add button now has a + icon. Your profile photo in the sender menu on the new topic page is round again. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On the hashtags page, clicking Gallery View or List View could leave that icon's tooltip stuck on the screen. Tooltips now close when you move to another page, across the site. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Editing a hashtag, or changing a hashtag's mute or follow settings, from the hashtags page always returned you to the first page of the list. Saving or cancelling now returns you to the page you were on, with the same sort order and view. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On the Drafts, Followed Hashtags, and Muted Hashtags pages, the checkboxes still had the old style and the rows didn't alternate colors. Both now match the site's other lists. The button for removing hashtags on these pages was called Delete and was blue on Followed Hashtags; it is now a red Remove button on both pages, and it stays disabled until you check at least one hashtag. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The Follow Hashtag page was shown without the sidebar, and the Mute Hashtag page collapsed the sidebar's Hashtags menu. Both pages now show the sidebar with the right item selected. The Follow and Mute buttons stay disabled until you enter a hashtag, and the Mute button now shows the mute icon. After muting a hashtag, you were taken to Your Groups or your feed instead of Muted Hashtags; you now return to Muted Hashtags. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The Enterprise Settings page didn't highlight Enterprise Settings in the sidebar. BUGFIX: The note at the top of your profile settings is now shown in the same light-blue box as the notes on your other settings pages. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: A few badges and chips still used the old style: the NC (Not Confirmed) badge on a member's page, the RI badge in the Members page's reverification note, and the label filter chips on the subgroup members and subgroup direct-add pages. They now match the rest of the site. BUGFIX: On a topic's page, the Previous Topic and Next Topic buttons looked clickable even when there was no previous or next topic, such as Next Topic on the newest topic, and nothing happened when you clicked them. They are greyed out again when there is nowhere to go. The Add Event button on the calendar, shown to members who can't add events, is greyed out again too. BUGFIX: In the menus on the Files, Photos, wiki, database, analytics, activity, members, and pending message pages, the up and down arrow keys didn't move between menu items. They now do, as in the site's other menus. The wiki menu's Add Footer and Add Sidebar items are now greyed out when the page already exists. September 24, 2026: BUGFIX: The Sort By menus on the Photos, album, and photo search pages, and the New/Upload menu on the Files page, couldn't be reached with the Tab key. Several menu items that open a dialog also couldn't be chosen from the keyboard, including New Folder and Upload Files on the Files page, Custom Range on the analytics and activity pages, Delete This Revision in the wiki, and Copy on the pending message pages. All of them now work from the keyboard. CHANGE: On Your Groups, the badges showing your posting status in each group (P, M, NP, NMM, MF, and MT) were orange, red, or green, which could make an ordinary setting look like a warning. They are now light blue, like the Mod and Owner badges and the badges in your feed. The members pages that moderators and owners use keep their warning colors. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The notes at the top of the group and member Integrations pages, and the messages shown when there is nothing to list on the Pending Messages, Drafts, Chats, Database, and Hashtags pages, were plain grey boxes. They are now the same light-blue box as your settings pages and the Followed and Muted Hashtags pages. On the Hashtags page of a group with no hashtags, the New Hashtag button sat right against that box; there is now space between them. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The Create A Subgroup introduction at the top of the create subgroup page was a plain grey box. It is now the same light-blue box as the notes on other pages. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On the create group and create subgroup pages, choosing private messages opened a confirmation dialog that differed from the one on a group's settings page: the Yes button had a minus icon, and the titles and wording varied. Clicking Yes also submitted the form immediately, which on the create subgroup page could create the subgroup before you'd finished filling it in. The dialogs now match the settings page, with a check mark on Yes, and clicking Yes only confirms your choice. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: In the Insert Images dialog in the online editor, the Add button stayed greyed out after choosing a single image, so it could only be inserted by dragging it into the message. Also, image files without a file extension, such as by DAYS copy, could no longer be chosen or inserted. The Add button is now enabled as soon as you choose an image, and image files are recognized by their contents, whether or not they have an extension. Files that aren't images are still not inserted into the body of a message. beta.groups.io September 25, 2026: BUGFIX: On the login page, clicking Log In without entering an email address just reloaded the page, with no explanation. The email field is now marked with "You must enter an email address." When the email address doesn't have an account, the email field now says so, and it keeps what you typed. A wrong password was shown as a missing password; it now says "Your email address or password is incorrect." with the link to get a login link or set a password. BUGFIX: Registering with an email address that already had an account could also show a "wrong password" notice left over from the login attempt. Only the "already registered" message on the email field is shown now. BUGFIX: Sending an empty reply took you to your home page. You now stay on the topic, with the message "You must include a message." BUGFIX: On a group's subgroup categories, adding a category without a name took you to the group's home page without saving anything or explaining why. The form now stays open with "You must enter a name." and keeps what you entered. If saving, updating, or deleting a category fails, you now return to the subgroup categories page with an error message instead of the group's home page. BUGFIX: In the wiki, clicking Add after choosing an image in the Add New image dialog submitted the whole page, which cleared the page title, and the image was never inserted. Add now uploads the image and inserts it into the page, and the rest of the page is left alone. BUGFIX: When adding or editing a calendar event, typing a time with a space before AM or PM, such as 4:15 PM, saved it as 4:15 AM. Typed times are now read correctly, with or without the space. The next #changelog will be published on October 2, 2026. Take care everyone. Mark

Groups.io Updates @groups.io · 19/09/2026
✉️ [beta] Site updates #changelog beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/1213261…
Changes to the site this week: September 14, 2026: CHANGE: Email addresses ending in @ilands.app are banned. beta.groups.io September 15, 2026: BUGFIX: Pasting a standalone HTTP/HTTPS URL into the online editor could leave it unlinked unless followed by Space or Enter. These URLs now become clickable immediately when pasted. beta.groups.io September 17, 2026: BUGFIX: SAML setup could fail when an identity provider rejected the metadata fetcher's default client identification. Metadata requests now identify themselves as Groups.io. BUGFIX: SAML configuration errors incorrectly displayed a database error and discarded the submitted settings. The form now displays a specific SAML error and preserves the entered values for correction. BUGFIX: Calendar validation errors reset dates, times, All Day, and other event options. The form now preserves submitted values, and Event Name is marked as required. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Dismissing the private-archive confirmation could leave Visibility blank. Cancel, close, Escape, and backdrop dismissal now restore the previous selection; Yes retains the new selection. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Clicking inside the Members and Subgroup Members filter dropdowns could close them and clear selections. The dropdowns now stay open while choosing filters. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Member label descriptions are now displayed in the Members filter, matching Subgroup Members. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Saving or cancelling a member record opened from Subgroup Members returned to the regular Members list. It now returns to Subgroup Members with the previous list state preserved. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Photo searches omitted emailed images. Searches now include emailed images for viewers with archive access, and searching within Emailed Photos limits results to that album. Emailed-image results link to their source messages. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Two Top Hashtags sections appeared at intermediate browser widths. Only the appropriate version is now displayed. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Recent Topics now appears in a panel, with matching View All link styling for Recent Topics and Top Hashtags. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Subgroup page breadcrumbs had missing links or page titles. They now show a linked Subgroups parent and the current page title, with corrected breadcrumb spacing. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The sidebar shortcut to sibling subgroups is now labeled All Subgroups when viewed from a subgroup, and the subgroup directory breadcrumb identifies the main group. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The Subgroup Members table header lacked its gray background in light mode. The background is now restored. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Unchecked checkboxes now have clearer outlines and a hover highlight in light mode. Wiki history and database row checkboxes use the updated style. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Chat dates are now labeled Last activity. Microphone settings are disabled for viewers who have not joined the chat. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The Move Photo dialog now sorts destination albums alphabetically and uses a move icon. Edit Album and Edit Photo now include Cancel buttons. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Reports of messages, photos, files, and profiles now require a reason; empty or whitespace-only reasons are rejected. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Wiki comparison revision links and the Claimed by profile links in Pending Messages now open in new tabs. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Database import and row-action buttons were enabled without the required selections. JSON and CSV imports now require a selected file, View/Edit Row requires exactly one selected row, and Delete Rows requires at least one. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Cancelling Edit Table Properties returned to the database list. It now returns to the table being edited. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Database import, edit, and export actions now use matching, descriptive icons. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The private-archive confirmation now uses public instead of open and a check-mark icon for Yes. beta.groups.io September 18, 2026: BUGFIX: The Enterprise SAML request-signing setting advertised signed authentication requests without actually signing them, and SP metadata omitted the signing certificate. Enterprise owners can now prepare a dedicated certificate, import it into their identity provider, and explicitly enable request signing. SP metadata includes the prepared certificate and accurately reflects whether signing is enabled. Existing configurations remain unsigned until signing is explicitly enabled. NEW: Enterprise SAML settings now support certificate rotation: prepare and publish a replacement alongside the current certificate, activate it after coordinating trust with the identity provider, roll back if needed, and explicitly retire the previous certificate. Settings display certificate fingerprints, expiry dates, and warnings for certificates expiring within 90 days. The next #changelog will be published on September 25, 2026. Take care everyone. Mark

Groups.io Updates @groups.io · 12/09/2026
✉️ [beta] Site updates #changelog beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/1212102…
Changes to the site this week: September 7, 2026: BUGFIX: On the Files page, the update, move and delete icons on file rows had lost their link colour, hover and pointer cursor, and in dark mode tooltips showed dark text on a dark background. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: In the Files page's Move dialog, choosing a destination folder that had subfolders expanded them before the dialog closed. The folder an item is already in now shows a greyed-out [move here] instead of a link. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: In the activity log, clicking a file link displayed the raw file contents in the page. File links now open in a new tab and let the browser handle the file, as on the Files page, and moved-folder entries now include the folder link icon that moved-file entries have. beta.groups.io CHANGE: On the Files page, the Update dialog for a file is now titled Update File, and the New Folder and add-link dialogs keep their Add button disabled until the required fields are filled in. beta.groups.io CHANGE: On /bulkremove, the Send Removed Member Notice checkbox now comes before Upload Addresses, and the Remove Members button is disabled until addresses are entered or an upload file is chosen. beta.groups.io CHANGE: On /subgroupmembers, the Update button is disabled until there are changes to apply, and the Filter dropdown shows labels with no colour the same way /members does. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The intro text on /filesync and /syncconfig is now on an info panel and the /filesync note had a missing space, the Verify Logout dialog on the integrations pages has an icon on its Yes button, and the message editor's corners match the other form controls. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: In chats, leaving a chat produced a "Joined" event bubble instead of "Left". The join=1 parameter also stayed in the address after joining a chat and produced spurious "Joined" bubbles on a refresh; it is now removed once the join has been sent. beta.groups.io CHANGE: In chats, the emoji picker now closes when you click outside it, and the profile links in the Chat Members dialog open in a new tab. beta.groups.io CHANGE: On /addchat, the chats dropdown reads "Closed Chats" when editing a closed chat, and a Cancel button returns to the chats list. On /managechatmembers, the checkboxes use the current style, the Update button is disabled until there are changes, the breadcrumb includes the Chats parent, and the link next to the count is labelled Clear. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On /directory, the bottom page navigation could be covered by the scroll-to-top button. Viewing another member's profile no longer expands the Subscription menu and highlights Profile in the sidebar. beta.groups.io CHANGE: On the group home page, "Members can edit their messages" now shows a check mark, and on /edithashtag the Lock Topic checkbox is grouped with Topic Duration. beta.groups.io CHANGE: On the Files page, the Upload Folder dialog's Upload button is disabled until a folder is selected. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: In dark mode, the restyled list pages (/pending, /activity, /members, /exportgroup, /analytics, /banneddomains, /subgroupmembers, /managechatmembers, /chats and the rest) had lost their alternating row colours, and the row hover colour differed from before. Both are back to the way they were. beta.groups.io September 8, 2026: CHANGE: The current page in page navigation is now highlighted in blue. Previously the only hint was the cursor changing when hovering over it, and the restyled pages had lost even that. beta.groups.io NEW: An email message attached to a message (the message/rfc822 part Thunderbird creates when you drag a message into a compose window, or an .eml file) was shown on the website as a generic attachment that could only be downloaded. It now has an envelope icon, and clicking it opens the attached message in a viewer showing its From, Date, To and Subject headers and the body, with the .eml still available to download. Attachments inside the attached message are listed by name. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: When plain text messages were converted for display, web addresses were turned into links without being escaped, so an address containing a quote character could break the link markup. API BUGFIX: /adddatabaserow, /updatedatabaserow, and /deletedatabaserow returned misleading ID errors for JSON request bodies and reported malformed forms as server errors. They now explain which form encodings are supported and return bad_request errors for malformed forms. beta.groups.io API CHANGE: The database row write endpoints used the same error for missing, malformed, and nonexistent IDs. Their error messages now distinguish those cases. beta.groups.io API CHANGE: The database row write documentation incorrectly listed csrf as required when using API keys. It now explains that only cookie authentication requires it, documents form encoding and Google Apps Script's payload option, and clarifies that column field names use the IDs from getdatabases. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Some bounce messages from Exim mail servers showed only a generic error code instead of the delivery failure explanation. We now extract the detailed error from these messages and correctly identify mailbox-full errors as quota failures. API CHANGE: The API reference now has search, endpoint summaries, clearer parameter requirements and limits, expandable response examples, and named request examples. An editable request builder generates cURL, Go, and JavaScript code, and remembers the selected language. The layout, navigation, and code formatting are also improved on phones and in dark mode. API CHANGE: Corrected request examples for /gettopics and /updatepoll, and removed unsupported example parameters from /getfeed and /getpoll. The documentation now clarifies how omitted and empty values affect /updatewebhook and that /deletedatabaserow returns an empty HTTP 200 response. September 9, 2026: BUGFIX: RSVP comments in the event Responses page's gallery view were clipped to a single line. Comments now wrap so the full text is readable, including on phones. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Removing yourself from a subgroup through the member list or member page could leave the sidebar and role badge unchanged, and parent moderators could be incorrectly labelled Parent Owner. The page now fully refreshes after self-removal, and inherited roles display the correct Parent Owner or Parent Mod badge. beta.groups.io September 11, 2026: BUGFIX: When a search was active on /members, saving a member's details could leave their row showing the previous values. The list now loads current member details when returning from an edit, so saved changes appear immediately. beta.groups.io The next #changelog will be published on September 18, 2026. Take care everyone. Mark

Groups.io Updates @groups.io · 05/09/2026
✉️ [beta] Site updates #changelog beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/1210973…
Changes to the site this week: August 29, 2026: BUGFIX: The activity log entry for removing a group alias showed an internal id number ("removed group alias 153958") instead of the alias itself. It now logs the alias name, and both the added and removed entries quote it like other text values in the log. Existing entries are unchanged. beta.groups.io August 31, 2026: BUGFIX: On the Membership Defaults page, selecting Following Only did not enable the First Message Also and Auto Follow Replies checkboxes, and did not auto-check Auto Follow Replies, so those defaults could not be set. Also changed a leftover "thread" to "topic" in that page's help text and in the plain-text email footer. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The note on the hashtag alias page always omitted one hashtag of the pair: creating an alias showed "Topics tagged with # will be transfered to #tag", and editing one showed "transfered to #". The note now shows both hashtags, updating live as you type the name, and "transferred" is spelled correctly. The breadcrumb when creating a hashtag showed a bare "#"; it now says Create Hashtag. beta.groups.io CHANGE: On the Hashtags page, the grey alias text next to a hashtag's name was hard to read on many box colors, and in dark mode the box titles and topic counts were recolored to the page's dark mode text colors, making them hard to read on light box colors. Text inside the boxes now always uses the text color designed for each box color, with the alias slightly dimmed to stay distinct from the name. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: A member label with no color was drawn with white text on its white background, making the name invisible in the member labels list, the Set Labels dialogs and previews, and on the member page, where the label disappeared entirely against the page. No-color labels now get dark text and an outline, and the no-color choice in the label color picker shows as white with a border instead of a transparency checkerboard. Also fixed the separator line below the member page's labels, which did not extend the full width. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The Create Label dialog on the member labels page now shows a live preview of the label as you type, matching the Set Labels dialog on the member page, and the create-label forms across the site now use the same field names and description length. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On the group Settings page, the Restricted Membership checkbox (and the Allow Sponsorships checkbox in the General section) rendered as bare, unstyled checkboxes next to their styled neighbors. Both now match the other checkboxes. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The "To help prevent spam, groups must have at least one of these options set" note sat in a grey footer at the bottom of the Group Type and Moderation section, where it was easy to miss and often required scrolling to see. It now appears as a highlighted note at the top of the section. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The Two-Factor Authentication Policy setting has moved from the General section of the Settings page into the Privacy section, which is now titled Privacy and Security. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The Settings page did not enforce the rule that a group must keep at least one anti-spam option enabled: you could uncheck them all, and the site would silently re-enable New Members Moderated when saving. The page now keeps the last remaining option on (re-checking the checkbox, or reverting the Message Moderation selector), so the page always reflects what will actually be saved. BUGFIX: In the label color pickers, the checkmark showing the selected color was drawn in white, making it invisible on the white No Color swatch: editing a label with no color looked like no color was selected. The checkmark is now dark on that swatch. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The Create/Edit Label dialog on the Member Labels page now shows the same "Enter label name" and "Enter label description" placeholder text as the member page's Set Labels dialog. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The Group Description editor on the Settings page and the Signature editor on the Subscription page were always at least 400 pixels tall - a minimum sized for the message composer - showing mostly blank space for short content, and could not be resized any smaller. Both editors now size themselves to their content and can be resized down to 200 pixels; the message composer is unchanged. beta.groups.io September 1, 2026: CHANGE: When a moderator rejected a member's pending message, the rejection notice sent to the member was not recorded in the member's email delivery history. It is now recorded there as a member notice, the same way rejected subscription notices are, and if the notice bounces, that is recorded in the member's bounce history. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Posting a message with attachments totaling more than the group's maximum message size could take a minute or more to fail, because the size was only checked after the entire message had been assembled, and when it did fail, the draft was deleted along with everything in it. The size is now checked up front: the post is rejected immediately, and the draft is kept and reopened so the oversized attachments can be removed. Attachment uploads larger than the maximum message size are now also rejected at upload time, with an error stating the group's limit. API CHANGE: The /uploadattachments endpoint now rejects uploads that exceed the maximum message size with a new "content too large" error, instead of accepting attachments too large to ever be posted. /postdraft now returns its "post too big" error immediately rather than after processing the entire message. API NEW: The API could read group databases but not change them: /getdatabases and /getdatabaserows were the only database endpoints, so scripted changes meant exporting a CSV and manually re-importing it. Three new endpoints complete the set: /adddatabaserow, /updatedatabaserow, and /deletedatabaserow. Updates are partial - columns omitted from the request keep their current values - and rows are addressed by the id returned by /getdatabaserows. Column values use the same per-column field names as the website's forms (text_<colid>, number_<colid>, date_<colid>, and so on), documented with the new endpoints. Image and GitHub columns cannot be set through the API; on updates their existing values are preserved. beta.groups.io API NEW: Creating a calendar event through the API never notified the group: the web's "Add Event & Invite Group" button had no API equivalent, and the send_notice parameter - despite its name - only controls the notice sent when the event starts. The event endpoints now accept a send_invite parameter (/addevent, /updateevent, /addrepeatevent, /updaterepeatevent, /splitrepeatevent) that posts the #cal-invite message with its ICS attachment to the group, and /deleteevent and /deleterepeatevent accept send_cancel to post the #cal-cancelled notice. The send_notice parameter documentation has been rewritten to make clear what it actually does. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: When a group went over its storage limit, the site freed space by deleting attachments from its oldest messages. In groups where photos or files took up most of the space, deleting every attachment still would not bring the group under its limit, so this ran every week without ever succeeding: attachments were accepted when posted and then deleted a few days later, leaving messages with missing images and no explanation for the member who posted them or for anyone reading. Messages with attachments sent to a group in that situation are now rejected when they are sent, with a bounce explaining that the group is out of space. Groups where deleting older attachments can still free enough space are unaffected. BUGFIX: On the pending message pages, the previous/next message arrows next to the "1 of N" count rendered as tiny unstyled chevrons crammed against the count, instead of the normal navigation buttons. They are now proper buttons again, on both the view and edit pages. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The pending message page threw a JavaScript error on every view, which also broke the "Copy Email Address" tooltip in the sender dropdown. September 2, 2026: BUGFIX: On the view pending message page, the sender's profile photo in the sender dropdown was drawn as a rounded square instead of a circle like the sender dropdown on other pages. It is a circle again. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The edit pending message page still showed the old-style sender dropdown: an underlined name next to a large square photo or user icon, unlike the view pending message and New Topic pages. It now uses the same sender chip as those pages. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: With the editor set to Markdown, the Preview button under the Bio on your Settings page did nothing: the button changed to Edit and back, but the markdown was never rendered. The preview was asking the updates group to render it, which almost nobody has permission to post to, so the request was silently refused. Bios and signatures are now rendered without reference to any group, fixing Preview on the Settings page, the group Profile page, the Subscription page's signature, and a member's signature on the member page. If a preview ever does fail now, it says so instead of leaving you on an empty preview. beta.groups.io September 3, 2026: BUGFIX: In the Posting Privileges section of the member page, and for the Full Featured Digest option on the Membership Defaults page, clicking a radio button's caption did nothing; only the button itself could be clicked, even though the cursor suggested otherwise. The same problem affected new-style checkboxes and radio buttons on several other admin pages, including the paid membership tier pages, the subgroup tiers page, the enterprise setup page and the Members page's moderation dialog. Clicking the caption now selects the option everywhere. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On the member page and the Membership Defaults page, the Email Delivery, Message Selection, Owner Email and Monday Start options still rendered as old-style controls next to the new-style ones, and on Membership Defaults their help text sat flush with the button instead of under the caption. They now match the rest of the page. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Checked checkboxes and radio buttons on the redesigned admin pages used Bootstrap's default blue, a different shade from the blue used everywhere else on the site. They now use the site's blue. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The remaining old-style checkboxes and radio buttons on the redesigned admin pages now match their neighbors: the Filter menu and the Set Email Delivery dialog on the Members page, the Bcc checkboxes in the reject-message dialogs on the pending message pages, the member label filters on the subgroup pages, the pending subgroup list on the member page, the tax acknowledgment when enabling paid memberships, and the column options in the Extra Member Data column editor. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The Signature editor on the member page, the Bio editors on the account Settings and Group Profile pages, and the description editor on the subgroup category page were still at least 400 pixels tall and could not be resized any smaller, unlike the Group Description and Subscription page Signature editors changed earlier this week. They now size themselves to their content and can be resized down to 200 pixels. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Editing a database row with a required image column failed with "This field is required." unless the image was uploaded again, even though the existing image was shown in the form. The same happened when editing extra member data or a group profile with a required image field. The existing image now satisfies the requirement. Removing the image from a required column without uploading a replacement is now rejected, where before it was silently allowed. beta.groups.io September 4, 2026: CHANGE: Changed the third batch of web pages from Bootstrap 3 to Bootstrap 5: a group's member-facing pages — the group home page, Hashtags, Calendar, Chat, Database, Files, Photos, Wiki, Donations, Integrations, and the Slack and file sync pages — plus creating a group or subgroup. This is plumbing, not a redesign; the pages should look and behave as before. Messages and the pages outside a group are unchanged. CHANGE: Dialogs on the redesigned admin pages had been slightly narrower than before the redesign. They are back to their original width. BUGFIX: In the image preview on the redesigned upload pages (image columns on database rows, the group profile photo, wiki images), the previous/next arrows and the header buttons of the Detailed Preview dialog were blank. They are back. BUGFIX: Opening the Slack member sync page for a group with no Slack sync set up failed with an error instead of redirecting to the sync setup page. BUGFIX: On the Integrations page, the Bluesky Cross-Posting Integration was marked Active whenever the group had an email integration, whether or not it had a Bluesky one. BUGFIX: Dropdown selectors on the redesigned admin pages, such as Message Moderation on the Settings page, used Bootstrap's default look: squarer corners, a different border color and a blue glow when focused, unlike the rounded, lighter-bordered style of the text boxes next to them and of the dropdowns on the other pages. In dark mode the arrow on those selectors was also nearly invisible. They now match the rest of the site's form controls in both modes. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The "All actions" filter on the Activity pages (the group activity log, a member's activity, and your own account's activity page) used its own older look: square corners, a darker border and a small triangle, matching no other dropdown on the site. It now has the same corners, border, height and arrow as the other selectors, in light and dark mode, and the highlighted item in its list uses the site's blue. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The select-all and per-row checkboxes on the redesigned admin list pages still rendered as bare browser checkboxes next to the restyled ones: Pending Messages, Members, Sent Invitations, Export Group Data, the Subgroups member grid, and the email, feed, Bluesky, GitHub and Trello integration lists. They now match the other checkboxes. beta.groups.io CHANGE: On the Invite, Direct Add, Bulk Remove and File Sync pages, the "Upload a file containing the email addresses..." hint under the Upload Addresses file picker was printed in the regular text color with no final period, unlike the other hints on those pages. It is now styled and punctuated like them. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On the Sent Invitations page, the Actions button was always enabled, so Cancel/Remove Invite and Send Again could be chosen with nothing selected. It is now disabled until at least one invitation is checked, like the action buttons on the other list pages. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The "Directly add people to your group..." warning at the top of the Direct Add page was a plain grey box. It is now the same highlighted note used for the anti-spam note on the Settings page. beta.groups.io CHANGE: On the Membership Defaults page, only the panel title expanded or collapsed the Default Subscription Settings and Default User Settings panels; the description text under the title did nothing, so the cursor flipped between a pointer and a text cursor as you moved across the heading. The description now toggles the panel too. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The Edit Notice page had no Cancel button, unlike the other edit pages. It now has one, returning to the Notices list. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On the integration sub-pages (adding or listing email, feed, Bluesky, GitHub and Trello integrations), the Integrations breadcrumb was plain text instead of a link back to the Integrations page, and the email and feed list pages showed no page title after it. The breadcrumb is now a link, and both list pages show their title. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On the email, feed, Bluesky, GitHub and Trello integration list pages, the Created/Added header was right-aligned but the dates under it were not, and the Delete/Remove button was always enabled. The dates now line up under their header, and the button is disabled until something is selected. On the email, feed and Trello lists, the Add button disappeared when the list was empty, leaving no way to add one without going back to the Integrations page; it now stays. The Bluesky list's Add and Remove buttons were arranged differently from the other lists; they now match. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Removing a Bluesky integration returned you to the Feed Integrations page instead of the Bluesky Integrations page. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The hashtag list on the Add Bluesky Integration page was in the order the hashtags were created. It is now alphabetical. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: When adding a Bluesky integration, declining the permission request on Bluesky's authorization page landed you on an "invalid callback parameters" error page. You are now sent back to the site instead. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: After approving access on Trello while adding a Trello integration, the page that came back was sometimes blank and the integration was not added. The callback now completes, and if it does fail it redirects rather than showing a blank page. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The links in the Topics list at the top of the HTML digest did nothing for members reading AOL mail in Firefox, because each link's target was marked with only the older name attribute, which that combination ignores. The targets now also carry an id attribute, so the topic links, and the "Top" link at the end of each message, work there. beta.groups.io The next #changelog will be published on September 11, 2026. Take care everyone. Mark

Groups.io Updates @groups.io · 29/08/2026
✉️ [beta] Site updates #changelog beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/1209820…
Changes to the site this week: August 26, 2026: API BUGFIX: Paginated API endpoints treated an invalid or out of range page_token as the first page while still reporting has_more, so a client with a bad token would loop over the first page forever. Such a token now returns an empty page with has_more false. beta.groups.io API BUGFIX: The last page of /gettopics results within a group reported has_more along with a next_page_token that was not a valid cursor, causing an invalid_value error when used. Paging through a group's topics now terminates cleanly. August 27, 2026: BUGFIX: When viewing a message, the "View All Messages" link always loaded the first page of the topic, so if the message was not within the first page — including a reply you had just posted — it was nowhere in view. The link now takes you to the page of the topic containing the message and positions on it, in either sort direction. beta.groups.io CHANGE: In groups set so that messages from members can only be tagged with existing hashtags, moderators could always create new hashtags by including them in a message subject, even without the "Create or Modify Hashtags" permission — meaning a typo in a subject line could silently create a new hashtag. That permission is now honored when posting: a moderator without it is treated like a regular member, and their message is bounced or the new hashtag removed, depending on the group setting. Owners, moderators with the permission, and groups using the default hashtag setting are unaffected. BUGFIX: When composing a message in the web interface on a phone-sized screen, the editor toolbar was missing most of its formatting tools — alignment, lists, indents, blockquote, and the extended formatting menu (fonts, colors, strikethrough, special characters) were gone entirely, with no way to reach them, even by rotating to landscape. The full set of formatting tools is now available on mobile: the most-used buttons stay visible, and the rest are behind a ... overflow at the end of the toolbar. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The "view all your groups" links at the top of HTML digests and daily summaries, and in the default Welcome notice, pointed at the site home page — which took logged-in members to whatever page they last used as their home view instead of their groups list, and showed logged-out members the front page. Those links now go directly to the Your Groups page, and if you are logged out, you are prompted to log in and then taken there. beta.groups.io API BUGFIX: The documentation for /addrepeatevent and /updaterepeatevent listed the wrong values for several repeat parameters. repeat_type was described as 1=daily, 2=weekly, 3=monthly, 4=yearly, when 2 actually means every Monday/Wednesday/Friday and weekly on selected days is 4, so a client following the documentation to create a weekly event silently got a Monday/Wednesday/Friday series instead. The repeat_ends values for "times" and "date" were also reversed, and the month_type values were wrong and incomplete. The documentation now matches the implementation, and both endpoints reject an out of range repeat_type with bad_request: invalid repeat_type instead of quietly creating a different repeat pattern. An unparseable timezone, which shifted every occurrence to the wrong day of the week, is now rejected the same way. API BUGFIX: /updaterepeatevent, /splitrepeatevent and /deleterepeatevent still acted on repeating events that had already been deleted; updating or splitting one brought the series back and started generating its occurrences again. They now return bad_request for a deleted series. BUGFIX: A deleted repeating event could come back on its own. If the series had been created from an emailed calendar invitation, a later invitation carrying the same event id — a re-send, or an update from the organizer's calendar program — recreated it as a new live series, and an RSVP reply to a reminder email sent before the deletion could do the same. Deleting a repeating event now sticks: invitations and RSVP replies for a deleted series are ignored. NEW: Calendar events that request RSVPs and have a maximum attendee limit now display a badge on the calendar showing the number of spots still available, or Full when the event has reached its limit — so you can scan a month of events for one with space without opening each event. The badge appears in the month, week, day, and list views of both a group's calendar and the consolidated calendar, and hovering over it shows the details. Events without an attendance limit are unchanged. beta.groups.io beta.groups.io CHANGE: In the activity log, entries for topics that were automatically deleted because a hashtag expired were filed under "Hashtag - Expired" — an easy place to overlook when looking for a deleted topic, since every other deletion is listed under "Message - ..." or "Topic - ...". The action is now named "Topic - Deleted due to expired hashtag" and appears in the action filter directly after "Topic - Deleted". Existing log entries are unaffected other than the new name. beta.groups.io NEW: The Direct Add page of a group with subgroups now has a "Restore previous subgroup memberships" checkbox, unchecked by default. When checked, anyone being added who was previously a member of the group is also added back to the subgroups they belonged to when they were removed, with their previous delivery settings, and the subgroups are listed in the notice they receive. This helps groups that remove members when a paid membership lapses and re-add them when they renew — previously, the person's subgroup memberships had to be rebuilt by hand. Moderator and owner roles are not restored, and subgroups explicitly checked on the page are added with default settings as before. It works for removals that predate this feature. API NEW: /directadd accepts a new optional boolean parameter, restore_subgroups, equivalent to the new "Restore previous subgroup memberships" checkbox. Restored subgroup memberships are included in the response's added_members. BUGFIX: Banning an email address that didn't already have a Groups.io account ran the address through the same validation used for new registrations, so addresses on disposable email domains, role accounts like postmaster@, and similar were rejected with "That email address is not valid" — exactly the addresses moderators most want to ban. Banning now only requires that the address be a plausible email address. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Activity log entries for event RSVPs named the event but not its date, so with repeating events — which all share the same name — there was no way to tell which occurrence someone had RSVPed to without opening each instance on the calendar. RSVP entries now include the event's date, e.g. "RSVPed yes to event Weekly Training (scheduled for Sep 16)". This also covers RSVPs removed or changed by a moderator, waitlist promotions, and attendee comment edits. The dates — including those already shown on added/updated/deleted event entries — are now displayed using your timezone and date format preferences. Existing log entries are unchanged. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Changed the second batch of web pages from Bootstrap 3 to Bootstrap 5: all of a group's admin pages — Members, Pending Messages, Invitations, Settings, Membership Defaults, Billing, Paid Memberships, subgroup management, and the rest. This is plumbing, not a redesign; the pages should look and behave as before. BUGFIX: On the Pending Messages, Activity, Manage Chat Members and Subgroup Members pages, the search box could sit on top of the list, hiding it — a side effect of the restyling above. Reported on beta within hours; fixed the same evening. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On phones, tables on the restyled admin pages — most painfully the Activity log — wrapped each row over many screen lines instead of keeping one line per entry with sideways scrolling, the way they had always displayed. The new framework kept the responsive-table class but dropped its phone behavior. One line per row, scrolling sideways, is restored on all the restyled pages. beta.groups.io INTERNAL: The browser error reporter could not deliver a report when the site's JavaScript bundle failed to download, because the reporter itself depended on that bundle — so real users with failed loads were invisible, while scraper bots (which inject their own jQuery) flooded the log with the follow-on errors. The reporter now uses a transport of its own, sends a single classified bundle-load-failure report naming the script that failed, suppresses the cascade of "not defined" errors that follow a failed bundle, and records whether the reporting browser had a session cookie, separating members from bots at a glance. August 28, 2026: BUGFIX: On a member's page in the admin area, the Moderator Permissions, Moderator Notifications and Owner Email sections — which should only appear when the person's role is moderator or owner — displayed for every member. This was display-only: no member gained any permission, and the page is only visible to moderators and owners in the first place. The sections once again appear only when the role calls for them. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Dropdown selects across the restyled admin pages — group Settings, Membership Defaults, Direct Add, member pages, and others — were missing their down-triangle in every browser, and were sized wider than before. A restyling class that suppresses the native triangle (expecting a replacement image that only comes with the correct class for selects) had been applied to some pages but not most. All selects now show the triangle and return to sizing to their content, on every restyled page. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: In dark mode, member labels (and any other colored chip) displayed grey instead of their assigned color. Dark mode's grey treatment is meant for count badges only; it now leaves anything carrying a color alone, as it always did before the restyling. beta.groups.io CHANGE: On the group Aliases page, the entry form now sits above the list of aliases — matching the Banned Domains arrangement — so adding an alias no longer requires scrolling past a long list. The help text moved into the box itself as placeholder text, the list is sorted alphabetically instead of by the date added, and the add buttons on both the Aliases and Banned Domains pages get a little breathing room above them. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: In the Moderator Permissions list on a member's admin page, the "Invite Members" checkbox rendered indented differently from the rest of the list. It now lines up with its neighbors. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The sections on a member's admin page — User Details, Moderator Permissions, Member Notifications, Email Delivery, and the rest — are now collapsible, like the corresponding sections on the Subscription page, so sections you aren't using can be folded out of the way. They start expanded. Section headings on both pages also now use a single consistent color; previously the collapsible ones rendered slightly darker than the static ones. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The check that blocks executable files inside archive attachments — which Gmail and most other providers reject outright, for every recipient — decided whether an attachment was an archive from its file name. An archive renamed to a different extension (a .zip sent as .zip.xxx, with a note telling recipients to rename it back) slipped past the check, so the message was accepted and distributed, and then rejected by every provider that looked inside — half the group never received it, with no indication to the sender that anything had gone wrong. Attachments are now recognized as archives by their content, whatever the file name, including archives nested inside other archives, and such messages are returned to the sender at posting time with the usual executable-attachment notice. INTERNAL: Related: an executable renamed to an innocuous extension — attached bare or placed inside an archive — still passes the name-based checks but is likewise rejected by providers that inspect content. Messages are now scanned for Windows, Linux and Mac executable content behind misleading names at posting time; detections are logged but not yet enforced while the detector's accuracy is confirmed against real traffic. BUGFIX: When a member accepted or declined a calendar invitation from a group hosted on its own domain — an Enterprise group, or a group with its own subdomain — the reply their calendar program sent back automatically (Outlook's "Accepted: ..." message, for example) was rejected by our mail server, so the member received a confusing "This group does not exist" bounce and their response was never recorded on the event's RSVP list. Those replies are now processed just as they are for groups at groups.io addresses: the response is recorded and no bounce is sent. The next #changelog will be published on September 4, 2026. Take care everyone. Mark

Groups.io Updates @groups.io · 28/08/2026
✉️ [beta] Unscheduled downtime this morning #outage beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/1209743…
Hello, The Groups.io website was generally unavailable this morning from about 5:39am to about 6:15am Pacific Time. During the outage, all Groups.io services were off-line. Our main Postgres database server froze up and had to be rebooted. The machine did not come up cleanly and Linode, our hosting provider, had to do emergency maintenance. The site has been back up since then. No data was lost. All email sent to groups during the outage was queued up and should have already been processed. Unfortunately, it appears that Linode is doing a migration of that server to a different host. That should mostly not affect us, but when the migration is complete, there will probably be a couple of minutes of elevated errors on the website (either slow web pages or errors). There is no way for me to tell when that will happen, but I guess it will happen in an hour or two. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Mark

Changes to the site this week: August 17, 2026: INTERNAL: Added additional protections against bot group signups. BUGFIX: Fixed a case where in rare circumstances, when a message is deleted, it should still show up on the group home page and in search results. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Messages that had signature blocks that were very long (or had parts that looked like signature blocks that were very long) would not be included in search results. August 19, 2026: CHANGE: Groups on the free plan are now notified when people try to join but can't. If your group is at the 100-member limit, owners and moderators receive a weekly email when join attempts were turned away, with a link to the activity log showing who tried. Denied join attempts that arrive by email are now recorded in the activity log as well. August 20, 2026: INTERNAL: Spent most of the week dealing with a major, ongoing, bot scraper attack - adding additional defenses against it, adding additional monitoring, and optimizing systems. The next #changelog will be published on August 28, 2026. Take care everyone. Mark

Changes to the site this week: July 14, 2026: NEW: Paid membership support early-access has launched. July 16, 2026: API NEW: Added the /updatetopic endpoint to update a topic's subject and hashtags, moderation, locked and sticky states, and reply-to setting. API NEW: Added a machine-readable Groups.io API skill guide at /api/SKILLS.md. CHANGE: "Group Profile" sidebar now opens the editable form. CHANGE: Empty profile fields become actionable on your own profile; there is now a muted "+ Add" link next to each. CHANGE: In Settings, added a note next to the existing profile-sync note - _"Custom fields defined by a group (for example Organisation or Job Title) do not appear here — they live on each group's own profile. To fill them in… Subscription > Group Profile … Edit Group Profile."_ CHANGE: Added help text under "Viewable In A Member's Profile" — "When checked, members can view and fill in this field on their own group profile (Subscription > Group Profile). When unchecked, only moderators can see or edit it." DOCS: Updates from Nina. Revision History July 17, 2026: CHANGE: Merged Stephane Fillod's French translations. Thanks Stephane! CHANGE: Updated all translations and corrected several issues. CHANGE: The Ask feature now respects commands to only search messages/files/etc as well as better date handling. CHANGE: When someone changes their RSVP to "Will Not Attend," they're now prompted for the comment right in the confirmation dialog, so collecting a reason for not attending works naturally. CHANGE: Previously, changing an event response could silently erase a member's earlier comment. Comments now carry over. CHANGE: There's a new per-event option, "Attendee comments are visible to all members." With it checked, everyone in the group can see the comments on the event's Responses page - useful for coordinating who's bringing what, or who's filling which position or location. Left unchecked, comments stay visible only to the event organizers, as today. BUGFIX: For format=flowed text emails, we would strip trailing spaces after the -- signature delimiter. I am on vacation next week. The next #changelog will be published on July 31, 2026. Take care everyone. Mark

✉️ [beta] Change in change email address flow #releasenotes beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/1176645…
Hi All, I've just revamped the flow for changing your email address. Hopefully it addresses the concerns expressed recently and makes things more understandable and forgiving. Here's how it now works. Changing Your Email Address When you change your email address on Groups.io, the change doesn't happen immediately. Instead, we use a confirmation process to verify that you own the new email address and to protect your account from unauthorized changes. How It Works Step 1: Request the Change From your Account Settings page, enter your new email address and submit the form. This creates a pending email change request. Step 2: Check Both Inboxes Two emails are sent: To your NEW email address: A confirmation email with a link you must click to verify you own this address To your OLD email address: A notification letting you know that an email change was requested (for security awareness) Step 3: Confirm the Change Click the confirmation link in the email sent to your new address. This verifies that you have access to the new email and completes the change. Once confirmed: Your account email is updated to the new address All your group subscriptions are updated automatically You'll use the new email to log in going forward Important Details Your Old Login Still Works: You still login with your old email address until you confirm your new email address. Expiration: Pending email change requests expire after 7 days. If you don't confirm within this time, you'll need to submit a new request. One at a Time: You can only have one pending email change at a time. Starting a new request cancels any previous pending request. Cancel Anytime: You can cancel a pending request from your Account Settings page before it's confirmed. Resend Confirmation: If you didn't receive the confirmation email, you can resend it from your Account Settings page (as long as the request hasn't expired). Case Changes: You can change just the capitalization of your email address (for example, from "john.doe@example.com" to "John.Doe@example.com") using this same process. Security Features The confirmation link contains a secure, randomly-generated code that cannot be guessed Your old email address is notified of any change request, so you'll know if someone else tries to change your email After confirming an email change, data exports are temporarily blocked for 24 hours as an additional security measure If the confirmation email bounces (is undeliverable), the pending change remains but cannot be completed until a valid email is provided If You Don't Receive the Confirmation Email Check your spam/junk folder Make sure you entered the correct email address Try the "Resend" button on your Account Settings page If problems persist, contact support Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Mark

✉️ [beta] New group setting: Two-Factor Authentication Policy #releasenotes beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/1168638…
Hi All, I've added a new group setting: Two-Factor Authentication Policy. It's described as "Choose who in this group is required to have two-factor authentication enabled" and has the following options: No requirement Required for moderators and owners Required for all members This setting is only available on standalone and parent groups; subgroups inherit the setting from their parent. The default is "No requirement." Owners must have 2FA enabled before they can change this setting. Additionally, users cannot disable their own 2FA if they belong to a group that requires it. ✉️ [beta] Unscheduled downtime #outage beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/1163008…
Hello, The Groups.io website was generally unavailable this morning from about 6:15am to about 7:21am Pacific Time. During the outage, all Groups.io services were off-line. Our main Redis database ran out of memory. This was caused by an inadvertent configuration issue related to moving the Groups.io backend services to new machines over the past few weeks. It took me longer than it should have to figure out the problem. And then there was an initial error upgrading the Redis instance to a larger machine, which also contributed to the length of the outage. Every outage is an opportunity to learn. I've already implemented additional dashboards and checks that will make it easier to diagnose this particular failure in the future. No data was lost. All email sent to groups during the outage was queued up and should have already been processed. Thanks, Mark
